Update: A sequel to It's a Wonderful Life is being developed for a 2015 release

Nov. 20, 2013by:

UPDATE: There is hope! The Film Stage is reporting that Paramount will block the sequel to IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE. The producers aiming to make the film have not licensed it from the studio who has no intention of granting one to them. Here's hoping that the prospect of money will not change their minds.

In your daily dose of bad ideas comes the news that a sequel to the Christmas classic IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE is currently in development. The Frank Capra original has become an annual staple for families around the world with it's uplifting tale of attempted suicide and redemption. Starring Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reed, the film was nominated for Best Picture and has become a part of cinema history. So, why not make a sequel almost 70 years after the first movie?

Variety reports that the new film will be titled IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE: THE REST OF THE STORY. An inspired title if I have ever heard one. The film currently has no major producers on board and could very easily go the route of other sequels to film classics like RAGING BULL II. But, the IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE sequel will have one returning cast member that appeared in the original film.

Karolyn Grimes, who played George Baileys daughter Zuzu in the original, will return for the Wonderful Life sequel as an angel who shows Baileys unlikeable grandson (also named George Bailey) how much better off the world would have been had he never been born.

Much like the awful A CHRISTMAS STORY 2 that littered Target and Wal-Marts last year, IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE 2 is a shitty idea. Why ruin a classic like this? This reeks of money-grubbing or cheap Christmas cash grab. In either case, unless the film gets a reputable cast and director, it will probably end up ignored until it shows up on the Hallmark Channel at 3am the day after Thanksgiving.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA this sounds so horribly bad!!! And the premise completely misses the point of the original. The angel shows up to show George how great life is WITHOUT him in it? That's the worst message for a Christmas movie ever. "If you're thinking of killing yourself over the holidays, you might as well do it. We're all better off without you." WTF!?!??!

This is the stupidest idea in the history of ideas. The only way id be ok with an 'It's a Wonderful Life 2' is if Steve Coogan was parodying it (like Hamlet 2).

THIS IS "NOT" A SEQUEL.

That premise sounds like they will just rehash the plot of the original. But they think that calling it a "sequel" will make people less angry than calling it a "remake". You don't believe me? Watch THE THING 2011.

People need to understand this not really Hollywood doing this. These are rogue low budget companies trying to make a dollar. Same thing happened with A Christmas Story 2. While I hope the fight works against a sequel I have low hopes that will happen.

It's a Wonderful Life: The Rest of the Story seems to be a cynical comment on what Americans have become as a culture. In It's a Wonderful Life, audiences learn that all lives have value. In this sequel, audiences learn "how much better off the world would have been had [George Bailey III] never been born." Do you see the contrast in message? The sequel seems to be a counterargument to the first one's moral of the story. And, this counterargument is supposedly "the rest of the story," to borrow

The sequel seems to be a counterargument to the first one's moral of the story. And, this counterargument is supposedly "the rest of the story," to borrow conservative Paul Harvey's famous phrase.

Now granted, Christmas classics do get iconoclastic treatment all of the time. For example, Bad Santa and Silent Night, Deadly Night problematize Santa Claus for those with a problem with Christmas cheer. This planned sequel could be for those people who hate It's a Wonderful Life. It could be for certain foreign markets and have foreign money behind it. However, most American audiences do not want this classic story altered by altering its happy ending. Most Americans do not want this Christmas classic cynically de-constructed and "ruined". Many of us won't be seeing this movie.

Didn't Nicolas Cage do a version of It's a Wonderful Life in which the story is reversed and he comes to realize what his life would have been like if he had settled down and had kids?

They shoul make more sequels to overrated movies. 'Cos in the public eye it will minimize the value of the original and then we as a society can start moving away from It's A Winderful frikin' Life. Call it the "Highlander effect." Also known as the "Jaws effect." Yeah, try to get the kids today to watch a great movie and all they do is complain about how they've heard that the series and the sequels suck. The kids today, man... I mean I can't get people to watch Lethal Weapin 'cos they think

I'd only be cool with this if...

...if instead of a sequel, it were a documentary. Instead of it being George Bailey, it would be the exec who thought up this idea. And instead of being saved by an angel, said film exec jumped, and died brutally.

The end.

These film executives sit around and spin their little webs of exploiting classic, meaningful films for profit and think the whole world revolves around them and their money. Well, it doesn't. In the whole vast configuration of things, I'd say they were nothing but scurvy little spiders!
