A Taxi Driver reboot??? Over a year later we have an update!

May. 13, 2011by: Mike Sampson

UPDATE 2 - Over one year later, despite the reports below that this news was "rubbish," we have confirmation that Martin Scorsese and Lars von Trier are teaming up for a film. The Hollywood Reporter confirms that Scorsese and Von Trier are working on a remake of THE FIVE OBSTRUCTIONS, which, as mentioned below, challenges a director to remake one of his own films. While the film Scorsese would be remaking has yet to be confirmed as TAXI DRIVER, it certainly seems likely as this portion of the news has finally been confirmed. UPDATE - A spokesperson for Lars Von Trier finally addressed the rumors yesterday in Berlin and called word on Scorsese and Von Trier working on any kind of TAXI DRIVER project "rubbish."

I think we have reached the absolute pinnacle of reboot stupidity. Keep in mind none of this is confirmed and should be taken as a rumor, but the fact that it's even being talked about is kinda scary. Reports out of the Berlin Film Festival by Danish magazine Ekko reports that Martin Scorsese is in talks with Lars Von Trier about a follow-up to the classic 1976. It's unclear whether it would be a reboot, sequel or prequel or what but Von Trier and Scorsese were both at the film festival allegedly talking about collaborating on the film.

Now that we have the rumor, let's see if we can bust it up. While lots of people are reporting on what Ekko magazine says, no one has really gone to the source to figure out what's what. I was able to track down the actual article from Ekko magazine and with a little help from Google Translate, we'll try to figure out exactly what's going on here.

In 2003, Von Trier challenged his friend Jørgen Leth to remake his favorite film, THE PERFECT HUMAN, five times each with a different obstacle outlined by Von Trier. For example, Leth must remake the film as animation or have it set in Cuba. The film films were edited together, along with behind-the-scenes footage and released as the documentary THE FIVE OBSTRUCTIONS. What Von Trier and Scorsese are discussing seems to be an extension of this experiment.

So while it seems that technically Scorsese might be working on some TAXI DRIVER things with Von Trier, I'd hardly expect it to be a "reboot." When asked to comment, Peter Aalbaek Jensen, the head of Von Trier's production company said, "we can not say anything."

Extra Tidbit: Call me crazy, but I think this could actually be fun.

I'm confused - The Five Obstructions is an experimental documentary about imposing rules on a filmmaker, the overall result to display choices an artist makes during the process. Jørgen Leth's film The Perfect Human is only a 13 minutes long documentary thus making it five different time during a film makes sense. You could not sit through five remakes of Taxi Driver in one sitting. Plus, these are exercises and I would hardly think that Leth considers any a reboot of his original film.

"The Perfect Human" was a doc, yes. But it wouldn't be any fun to limit such an interesting game to nonfiction, now would it?

The only thing i can recall about updating Taxi Driver was DeNiro saying in an interview a while back that there was talk of seeing where his character was now, nearly 30 years later. what would Travis Bickle be up to, you know? obviously it never happened and that's a good thing cuz DeNiro is more miss than hit nowadays.

I'll keep repeating myself, until the end of time if I have to, but REBOOT and REMAKE do NOT have the same meaning. In this case it wouldnt be a fucking reboot but rather a remake. Just cause reboot is the new hip word in the industry, doesnt mean you can use it everywhere.

This is the movie which Scorsese SHOULD have won his Oscar for, not the lousy "let's give him one now because he's earned it in other ways and who knows how much longer he'll be alive" one he got for THE DEPARTED. Probably the only truly great movie that he's made and one of the best that's ever been made, but too dark and too depressing for audiences to award. So much would be lost from its sociological aspect if it were remade in these days of IDIOCRACY minded movie-going morons.

Four words...

Worst. Fucking. Idea. Ever.
You don't touch a classic like this. What good does a reboot, revival, revision, or whatever the hell you want to call does to the this movie? Oh thats right, NOTHING!!!!

This project feels like "Looking for Richard" a movie that looks like art on the surface but is utterly self indulgent crap when you dig deep. This idea wreaks of absolute masturbatory self indulgence. It's not about Scorsese and Deniro giving us something new, it's about how these men can regurgitate something in an artsy fartsy illusion. Come on people, wise up.

This must be a cruel joke...or a stupid rumor.

I'm tired of remakes, it just goes to show you the quality of movies today. Not much thought goes into a remake when you have somewhere to start from. Why don't these filmmakers (directors, producers, writers, etc) live up to their worthy titles? It's upsetting to even hear of a rumor, let's hope it stays just that though.

1. You guys actually think DeNiro still has the acting chops to do a sequel justice?
2. This is avant-garde artsy farts Von Trier we're talking about. This will probably only play a one IFC theater or something.
Anyway I think this concept of 5 obstructions is pretty cool. I could see it better as a TV series maybe have classic & obscure films remade 5x each with a different setting or time period

Don't get me wrong, I mean I love a good remake but only when you can improve on an original feature. Say for instance if its a great sci-fi piece and it was hampered by SFX as they were 40 years ago or such but even though I've never seen Taxi Driver, I'm enough of an aficionado to know that its a film that should remain as it is and never redone. Films in that genre include Raging Bull, Godfather, Gone with the Wind, Wizard of Oz, Its a Wonderful Life, Citizen Cane, Pulp Fiction and so on.

No reboot, no remake. Even if it's Sequel, if you don't have Robert DeNiro to play the main part, like Donnie Darko or American Psycho sequels, then don't make a sequel at all.

If you look at it like this...

As 'The Perfect Human' was his friends favorite film, Taxi Driver is likely Von Trier's, so why would they want to remake/re-envision their favorites? Basically with those 5 "obstacles" Von Trier was challenging his friends Directing talent, put to the test on his favorite flick; much as I'd imagine Von Trier's friend is doing, and if Scorsese is intrigued then perhaps Von Trier's challenge may be worth the watch.

So, imo, I don't see it being any sort of remake/reboot as many below are

Just to clear it up...

Yeah, people are getting reboot confused with remake now, all because reboot is the new "cool hip phrase" in Hollywood. If your doing a movie and using the same exact title, based on a previous movie, it's a remake. Even if the actual story doesn't seem like it, it still is. Friday the 13th was a sequel story, called a reboot, and it's actually a remake cuz of the title. Predators is a reboot, but it's a sequel. It's a reboot cuz it's bringing BACK the franchise. But some reboots are restarts

But some reboots are restarts as well, as with The Incredible Hulk and Batman Begins. They bring back the franchise, but also restart it from scratch. So yeah, basically not all reboots are remakes. It's actually kind of dangerous to get them confused. If Predators (sequel) becomes a remake simply because certain people don't understand what the word reboot means, I'll be pissed. Throw it up on wikipedia and it sadly becomes official something is a remake if infact it isn't in the substance.

I came here expecting to post a comment consisting entirely of capitalised swearing, but when Lars Von Trier makes a film, even if it is monumentally awful, it's always intersting, so colour me intrigued.

I feel nauseous.

"I want to do a remake of Raging Bull with a really thin guy. Not just thin, but REALLY thin. Thin and angry, thin and angry, thin and angry. Can you see it? Can you see it?"
- Scorsese as himself in The Muse

"It's probably Marty Scorcese again. Now he wants to remake TAXI DRIVER using all women."

What was once a huge joke in an underrated movie (The Muse) has become a reality. When punchlines become films, we've hit rock bottom.

Nobody seems to care that Scorsese himself is involved in this rumour? If he is interested in revisiting the story I'm all for it. "The Color of Money" wasn't great, but it's still better than most movies being made these days.

I'm not the biggest Von Trier fan, but I think it will be an interesting "experiment" (not remake.) At least it's not Brett Ratner's ego becoming so inflated that it feels can it can touch something like this and improve on it how he thought he could with Batman.

And yeah, DeNiro's performance is one of the best performances of all time, but I wouldn't go as so far as to say that NO actor working today could turn in an amazing performance. There are really talented strong actors out there,

We already lost Heath Ledger, so this guy hands down stands as the best actor of his generation now.

I approached this thinking someone had gone completely batshit crazy in Hollywood. Turns out it was just completely batshit crazy von Trier, who is one of the few people I wouldn't mind having his name attached to some sort of "Taxi Driver"-related whatever.

Sounds more like an idea right now than anything else. But "Taxi Driver" is one of those movies, there can be many imitators, but only one "Taxi Driver." That's what I don't understand about the reboot frenzy, why can't people be suited

Not Surprised

The hardest thing to reboot from the origianl film will be DeNiro's performance. You can get the set design right, even a decent script and director, but no one in the acting world today is ready to fill those shoes. At least no one at the age DeNiro was for the original. Maybe a sequel with DeNiro and Foster reprising their roles would work - ya know, 40 years later...?

Saw it coming

Instead of taking a chance adapting a myriad of novels from new and established writers or doing some cheap ass, quick money sequels (I have no problem with those), they're gonna REBOOT AKA REMAKE AKA F**K UP the movies that are already in the can and classics.

Just my personal opinion here, but this is total B.S. and it's been going on too long.

No movie's safe. How long before we get a reboot on the Godfather? A remake of Close Encounters of the Third Kind? The Indy franchise clunked to

No movie's safe. How long before we get a reboot on the Godfather? A remake of Close Encounters of the Third Kind? The Indy franchise clunked to an end. Why not give the fedora to Zac Effron and redo "Raiders"?

Doesn't sound like fun to me. Movies were fun for me. The fun is slowly being removed from movies and I don't dig it.

But that's just my opinion.

I was about to agree with th it being the pinnacle of stupidity but after reading the last 2 paragraphs now it makes sense. I have yet to see the 5 Obstructions but if it follows the ideas of that movie it might actually be kind of fun. It would actually make MORE sense that a straight up sequel or remake.
