A writer has been found for the fifth installment of Pirates of the Caribbean

Jan. 11, 2013by: Niki Stephens

It doesn't really matter whether you want another PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN movie or not because there's a fifth one coming. PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES made shiploads of money (thanks, Paul) so the rolling out of another installment was inevitable.

Disney has hired Jeff Nathanson (CATCH ME IF YOU CAN) to script whatever the fifth PIRATES movie is going to be called. Of course, it's too early too know what the plot is and who among the stars will be back. I'm sure you can count of Johnny Depp though. I think it's fair to say that Depp really loves the role, and enjoys where the road takes him with it. Depp hasn't signed on as of yet. Right now, he's wondering if the ALICE IN WONDERLAND sequel will be a good idea, and will need a good script to seal the deal.

Not sure who all here saw the last PIRATES movie, but it just didn't work for me. I mean, I still got the fun aspect out of it, but I missed Bloom and Knightley. However, I was thankful for Ian McShane in an capacity.

Maybe this one will give me what I want. Nathanson, don't let me down.

I'm the complete opposite. I thought Pirates 4 was good because of the absence of Bloom and Knightley. Just couldn't stand there characters anymore and I thought Pirates 2 and 3 were mediocre at best.

I agree. Forcing characters into sequels just for the sake of it is a detriment. It was clear from the opening moments of 2 that the only reason for them to be there was "because it's Orlando and Keira, that's why!". Having the extraneous "my dad is actually still alive!" and "my dad died at some point in time" storylines were not good enough reason to have them there. That and they unlearned all the lessons they learned in the first film: loving each other for who they really are, coming to

That and they unlearned all the lessons they learned in the first film: loving each other for who they really are, coming to trust Jack Sparrow, etc. Even Jack's newfound respect for the two were disregarded as soon as he had to encounter them. They were unnecessary characters who's storylines had already been completed in the last film. I would have rather seen new characters or even just the black pearl crew deal with davey jones.

I missed Verbinski the most - sign him up. Keep Marshall far away from this one. The sequels all suffered some problems but 2&3 have gotten much better with age and the 4th is a distant last but still fun. This is good news to me.

I love the series, but the last one was awful. They didn't take it seriously in the least. Towards the end where Jack and his first mate joke about magic and whatnot... totally ridiculous. Bring back the original flare.

I dug all 4.

The ending of Stranger Tides really needed another pass at the script, but I had a ball with that one. And I sat down and watched 2 & 3 the other day, and I still don't get the hate for them.
Also I thought I read back in August that Depp did in fact sign on for #5. And Orlando Bloom was very interested in coming back.

Whatevs, I'm down.

I liked 2 and 3

I saw them as one complete and complex movie. It was refreshing to see an action fantasy take a smart and ambitious approach. Pirates 4 was basically the studio say "Do you know what would be great? Two Jack Sparrows" it was dumb, and they focused too much on the two jack sparrows (Penelope Cruz) that every other new character seemed flat and dull. 2 and 3 had the benefit of using characters set up in 1 so it could just jump into the story instead of character development.

As for 5. I

As for 5. I always though they can just recycle the "Seven Samurai" story line. An Island is being attacked by pirates so they hire 7 other pirates (including Jack Sparrow) to fight them off. Simple, exciting, plenty of leeway and its been a while since someone used that story line (Bugs Life?). I really dont mind if Hollywood recycles classic storylines, they are classic because they are good and its been done since the beginning of time (seriously, Romeo and Juliet is based off an Italian play). As long as they craft a genuinely good movie around it.

What I really want to know is why Joblo doesn't have proof-readers that catch misspellings and incorrect grammar in their employee's contributions. This site is devolving due to quantity over quality. It's just a cash cow for you now anyway, huh?

Jeff Nathanson

Really, the writer of Catch Me If You Can? How about: From the writer that brought you such classics as The Terminal, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Rush Hour 3, Tower Heist, and the greatest film of all time, Speed 2: Cruise Control.
In all seriousness, to pretend that Jeff Nathanson is in any way, shape, or form a proper writer that should be in charge of a movie this big is absurd. The guy is a hack and bringing him on board is a clear sign that Disney does not really

In all seriousness, to pretend that Jeff Nathanson is in any way, shape, or form a proper writer that should be in charge of a movie this big is absurd. The guy is a hack and bringing him on board is a clear sign that Disney does not really care about making a good film in this franchise any more because they know Jack Sparrow will bring in ticket sales regardless.
So I recommend everyone curb your enthusiasm for this project until a new writer and a proper director are brought on board but don't get your hopes too high.

I really hate how movies sequels only get made depending on the box office of the original. it's as if they do not care about stories or characters but about money. i can understand why pirates 5 may excite most but i think this ship has sailed awhile ago

Unless they return to the roots of what made the first one great and the second one enjoyable then don't make it at all. At World's End was a mess and On Stranger Tides was boring.

It's simple.

If you watch a Pirates movie as a "movie critic", then you'll find a truckload of things not to like. If you can remember what it was like being a kid, they're all great adventure movies. The third was a clusterf**k, but it was still a LOT of fun. The fourth was awesome.

The second had the best moments, and by far the best one. Never seen the fourth one, just because. Don't really care for another one. Where else can they go with it?

They should make a Davy Jones spin-off. Bill Nighy rules.
