Aaron Paul in serious talks to join Better Call Saul

02.28.2014

YEAH, BITCH!

Last year in September, we saw our very last episode of BREAKING BAD. Well, that gets a ”Boo, bitch”, but then we found out that a spin-off was in the works centered on the character of Saul Goodman with the title based on his slogan, BETTER CALL SAUL.

The hope was that we would see series regulars from BrBa. So far aside from obviously Bob Odenkirk, only one has signed on, the great Jonathan Banks aka Mike Ehrmantraut. Now it looks like Jesse Pinkman might join in on the action.

Aaron Paul told AP that he has had serious talks with BREAKING BAD creator Vince Gilligan about reprising his role for the spin-off.

Anything Vince is involved with, I'm there. I owe him my entire career. And the idea of jumping into the skin of Jesse Pinkman again in his lighter days — because it's all a prequel — it would be fun.

Gilligan said previously that he would be making calls to see which of the actors wanted to cameo in the show. There’s still no word on Bryan Cranston, but it looks like Dean Norris definitely won’t be taking part especially with his obligations on CBS’ UNDER THE DOME saying that he doesn’t think they’ll let him do “a little cable show”.

Norris then added:

I think that experience was that experience. I'm not a big fan of kind of revisiting something that has already been done. But I think it's going to be awesome. So I can't wait to see it.

As for the news on revisiting Jesse Pinkman...

Great to hear, but I'm still hoping we'll get to see him in a sequel story at some point.

I would like to see the Saul's life before Breaking Bad, running parallel with it and then the aftermath. Everything from his point of view.

Just Don't See It

I'm not sold on this just yet. Honestly I would MUCH rather see a Pinkman sequel series over a Saul prequel series. We don't know what lied ahead for Jesse but does Saul's past really matter?

Prequels suck, it eliminates the entire suspense of the story when you already know ahead of time how the characters story ends.

But technically, we DON'T KNOW how Jesse's story ends.

I'm actually inclined to agree with you Antarius. I do think Saul is enough of a fringe character that whatever his dealings with Mike, Jesse, or maybe even Gus, wouldn't factor too much into the world of Heisenberg. It's all in how they handle the storytelling.

Just a cameo

This story implies he's coming back as a full time star. Him and Cranston have said they'd do a cameo since this show was announced. That's all this news is confirming.

[link]m not a big fan of this idea. I wanted to keep the two shows very separate so I'm cautious about this news.

I hope this doesn't happen.

I love Breaking Bad and I don't want them to do anything with this new show that will tarnish it's legacy. Jesse had never met Saul before he and Walt flipped coins to see who had to go into the his office and take the first meeting with him. I'm sure Saul had a long interesting career representing scumbags before the events of Breaking Bad which gives them more than enough material to form storylines around than having to figure out a way to fit Jesse in.

Jesse knew he was they guy to go to. Maybe Combo or Skinny Pete had dealings (not Badger though, because we saw him meet Badger for the first time, too).

Perhaps. Breaking Bad was such a brilliantly written show that I don't want them to settle on a cheap way to bring Jesse into the fold without it looking just like a glorified cameo.

Hell. Yea. Bitch.

If I remember correctly, it was Jesse who suggested to Heisenberg early on that he get a "criminal" lawyer, and the next thing we see they are in Sauls office. So there was never any mention or discredit of any past relationship that Jesse and Saul may have had. I think that, so long as his role isnt nearly as large or dangerous as working with Heisenberg, it would be perfectly plausible to put him in the show as a regular client of Saul's for previous offenses. Probably small time stuff.

I hope it's just a couple of cameos here and there. I loved the way Jesse's story ended and the fact that we have no idea what would happen to Jesse next. I just don't want his character to seem like overkill at this point.
