Aaron Sorkin will be the one to write the Steve Jobs biopic for Sony

May. 15, 2012by: Niki Stephens

Well, I guess I can sleep easier knowing that the Steve Jobs biopic with Ashton Kutcher is an independent release. Why they are still bothering with it after today's news I don't know.

According to a press release from Sony, Aaron Sorkin (MONEYBALL) has been hired to write their Jobs biopic. Details are below.

AARON SORKIN TO ADAPT STEVE JOBS FOR SONY PICTURES

Film to be Based on Walter Isaacsons Best Selling Biography of Late Apple Co-Founder-

CULVER CITY, Calif., May 15, 2012 Academy Award winning screenwriter Aaron Sorkin will adapt Steve Jobs, a motion picture based on the best-selling biography of the legendary Apple co-founder by award-winning journalist Walter Isaacson, it was announced today by Amy Pascal, Co-Chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment, and Doug Belgrad, President of Columbia Pictures. The project is being produced by Mark Gordon, Scott Rudin and Guymon Casady.

Published late last year, Steve Jobs was Amazons best-selling book of 2011. In addition, the biography ranked #1 among bestselling hardcover books by a 2:1 margin, with sales of 2,246,569 in 2011, according to Publishers Weekly.

Commenting on the announcement, Pascal said, Steve Jobs story is unique: he was one of the most revolutionary and influential men not just of our time but of all time. There is no writer working in Hollywood today who is more capable of capturing such an extraordinary life for the screen than Aaron Sorkin; in his hands, were confident that the film will be everything that Jobs himself was: captivating, entertaining, and polarizing.

Ashton Kutcher

Sucks to be him right now. Chose the damn wrong Jobs script! I think he looks dead on like early Jobs. I really do like the idea of Demetri Martin though. I think he has the chops for it.

I hate the idea of capitalizing on death, but since the book came out like the day after Jobs died (really messed up in my opinion), so I guess it's been long enough and Sorkin can make anything entertaining.

That's too bad. A guy like Joss Whedon could have brought his "barely works for television" writing style to a project like this. Nathan Fillion could have played Steve Jobs. Oh well.

@Extratidbit

I guess it would depend what stage of his life you are looking at.

If its his later years I'd go with Ralph Fiennes

uncanny, eh?

Aaaannddd...

Get David Fincher on board to direct again, and call it a day. I think this story has a lot of darkness to it, same as The Social Network. I think it could be very interesting with those two paired up again, though I feel it unlikely.

I must agree that it would be great to see Noah Wyle again, The Tucci would also be fantastic.

Just please not someone like Zac Efron or something.

Curve Ball: Christian Bale if he does one of his classic dramatic weight losses...

Stanley Tucci would be a solid choice.

While Noah Wyle did a great job, I can't see him being hired to headline a major motion picture. Same with Demetri Martin.

Aaron Sorkin is the only guy who should be allowed to make a Steve Jobs film. And I can't think of a better way to complete his unofficial 'Nerds Shall Inherit The Earth' trilogy (with Social Network & Moneyball) than this.

Extra Tidbit: Joe Gordon-Levitt

Really?

Do we really need 2 Steve Jobs films? I like Sorkin, drop the Kutcher one and blacklist the casting director.

TIDBIT - Demetri Martin

@movie_man101 and TornDaredevil if you read carefully the article is refering to two different movies. It is just poorly worded. The article is saying why are they still doing the Kutcher biopic when Sorkin is attached to write a different one.

Anyway now that is cleared up, I think Demetri Martin would be great for this role.

Yeah, the article has been changed. It originally suggested that Sorkin is writing the Kutcher version.

Incorrect news

Kutcher is starring in a different film than the one Aaron Sorkin has been hired to write. Better correct this one quick guys.

These are two different films.

Sorkin is working on a different Steve Jobs film than the one Kutcher is starring in. I will hold out for the former.
