Academy Award winning actor Philip Seymour Hoffman dead at 46 (1967 - 2014)

Feb. 2, 2014by: Paul Shirey

Tragic news today as Academy Award winning actor Philip Seymour Hoffman has died at the age of 46. The actor was found dead in his New York apartment today. No official cause of death has been announced, but according to NYPD sources, "there was evidence of injectable drugs found at the scene."

Hoffman had carved a path of respect and dignity as an actor, taking on a diverse amount of roles thoughout his career. Hoffman emerged on the scene with his early roles in HARD EIGHT, TWISTER, and BOOGIE NIGHTS. He would go on to tackle many high-profile projects, such as THE TALENTED MR. RIPLEY, ALMOST FAMOUS, COLD MOUNTAIN, THE SAVAGES, MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE III, CHARLIE WILSON'S WAR, MONEYBALL, THE MASTER, and of course, CAPOTE, which awarded him a Best Actor Oscar and Golden Globe win.

Hoffman was most recently seen in THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE and his A MOST WANTED MAN debuted at Sundance just a few weeks ago. He was currently filming THE HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY sequels. His presence in film will be sadly missed. A tragic loss of an esteemed and much respected actor.

RIP Philip Seymour Hoffman (1967 - 2014)

Hoffman was a consummate addict, by his own admission. Everybody has seen addiction touch their lives, either at arm's length (no pun intended) or within their own tortured soul. That's what I believe it is, ultimately. Torture, to be addicted to something that at once 'takes the pain away' and yet destroys you, destroys those around you. It's an unfitting death for such an immense talent and father of three young children, who kept his life in New York city so he could raise them as 'normally'

And yet this- something that was chasing him no matter where he spent his time, something that overcame him even after he sought help. So sad. RIP.

This is a massive loss to the world of cinema. He will be missed, but we can all be thankful that we were lucky to witness many legendary performances from the man. His work will be around forever and new generations will get to witness his brilliance. Peace out, Mahoney. I hope they serve ribs with no sauce wherever you are.

Such an incandescent talent, and such lousy life choices

Phillip Seymour Hoffman was one of those rare actors who makes everyone around him up their game, just with his mere presence. It's infuriating that he'd disrespect his talent and success by becoming addicted to drugs. Countless actors would sell their souls for a glimmer of PSH's acting talent and he threw it away. A sad story.

Wow...

Came to see the box office results, what a shitty headline to see instead! He came a long way from movies like Scent of a Woman, incredible actor!! My thoughts to his family and friends, and may he rest in peace! Luckily, being such a great actor, it's likely he'll never be forgotten, he certainly left his mark on the world.

What do you consider "handling" heroin? Doing it daily without dying or doing it once in a while. The former is an addict and the latter is fooling themselves pretending to not be miserable when they aren't using.

I've seen too many people think they can "handle' heroin only to discover too late that it's handling them.

I highly recommend visiting some kind of addiction care facility sometime, IHRTNJ, or sit in on some kind of Addicts Anonymous meeting. You'll find it most illuminating.

Such sad news. He always brought his best to his roles, and seemed to elevate any scene he was in, whether it was drama or comedy. I found him equally great in dramas like Capote and Savages and other genres like Mission: impossible 3, in which I think he is the best villain in that franchise.
I wonder how much he was able to do on the remaining hunger game films. I really hope it was enough to keep him in the films.

One of my all-time favorite actors.

I can't think of a single performance Philip Seymou rHoffman didn't knock out of the park (he made some bad movies, but who doesn't). The one that I keep coming back to is in Sidney Lumet's "Before the Devil Knows You're Dead." Now I can't stop thinking about the scenes in that apartment with his drug dealer.

RIP Mr. Hoffman. Your legacy will live on.

Very sad. He was by far the most memorable off all the Mission Impossible movie villains, managed to be both loveable and love-to-hateable in The Master, and it goes without saying that his transformation into Truman Capote will go down as legendary in movie history. One of the few actors that could take on large films and still take on a lot of independent and smaller films, helping bring attention to them they may have not received otherwise. He will certainly be missed.

You know, I don't wish harm or death on anyone, but since it must happen and is happening nevertheless, why take the good ones? Why are the talented, meaningful ones always the people who also get tangled in habits that threaten their life? PSH was an extraordinary actor who brought a signature quality to his work. He made the difference between an average movie and a terrific one. And above all he seemed like a genuinely good person who never allowed the "celebrity spotlight" to turn him into

All I'm saying is, why do we always lose the good ones and are left stuck with a bunch of talentless douchebags who are neither good actors nor decent people to begin with?

Anyway, RIP, Mr.Hoffman. I loved his performances and always labeled him as a fantastic actor. Very sad that this had to happen.

And it just keeps happening and happening. This news is so sad! How many more senseless and needless deaths have to happen before we as a society wake up and realize something is going on? Between drugs and suicide so many people have ended their lives. If anyone is a friend of a drug addict or if we suspect someone is capable of taking their life we HAVE to interveen no matter the consuquence! We need to take a stand! I pray for his family!

That is truly terrible. He's a terrific actor and I've never ever hated a performance of his. I thought he was a brilliant addition to the Hunger Games series and could not wait to see where he would take the character in the next two films. He was also a really memorable villain in Mission: Impossible III, and he was very funny when he needed to be as well. Reading the comments, I realise there are so many great films he has been in that I have yet to watch. R.I.P. This sucks.

A great loss

We have lost a lot of great actors in recent years, but this one hits home the most for me. His entire career was excellent. I remember watching Twister and his goofy character was my favorite part years ago, and then the intensity he gave in the first 5 minutes of MI:3, or the heart he brought in Almost Famous. Addiction is a deadly disease that can be impossible to escape for some. I will miss his presence in film immensely.

I'm not saying rehab doesn't work, but the thing about any rehab program is that it is on the addict to use the tools the rehab program gives them to prevent themselves from relapse. There are countless stories of addicts who go in and out of rehab, inpatient, outpatient, etc. and it just doesn't work. Also, if you're functional on drugs (like being a working actor) it is easy to convince yourself either your don't have a problem or that the problem is under the control.

Hoffman did go to

Hoffman did go to rehab. He'd been clean and sober except for cigarettes for over twenty years before something caused him to relapse in late 2012. He was snorting. He went to rehab after a few days of snorting heroin to prevent himself from injecting. He'd quit drinking at something like 23, amidst other bad habits. There are many quotes from him throughout his career acknowledging his addictions and that they could kill him.

He knew he had a problem. He got help. It wasn't enough. Sometimes nothing is enough. So it goes.

Can I be the dick here, for one moment?

An actor that was as wonderful and as memorable as PSH will now have a tarnished legacy due to the way he died. When an actor dies in a manner that is drug addled, his.her entire body of work is tarnished. PSH will be forever known for how he died... with a needle in his arm. How will affect his performances now? People will see him in movies and talk about his performances that will be tainted by his death.
"Was he this great because of the smack?"

"He was a great actor, but he died a junkie death."
These statements will haunt him like so many terrific creative careers before him. It's such a damn shame.

Okay, let's test your theory:

Name the first thing you think of when I say the name David Carradine.

Just to clarify, David Carradine didn't die of a drug overdose.

No, but he did die in a situation that one could argue would "tarnish his legacy". But as shown, his manner of death is not necessarily what sticks in people's minds when they think of him. And the same will ring true for PSH.

The guy had it coming.

Anyone retarded enough to inject themselves with H deserves to die. Survival of the fittest. The man was an amazing actor but he knew the risks involved with hard drugs. One less addict in the world.

You're not ignorant, you're honest. Drug addiction isn't a disease (and yes, I come from a family who has had drug problems). Instead of the media saying what a tragedy, they should be saying stay away from drugs, they can kill you. Enough with this pitiful millionaire overdose routine, if a random junkie would have OD'd nobody would have said shit.

Most "random junkies" don't leave behind a body of work like Philip Seymour Hoffman. His filmography is filled with more amazing performances than most great actors who live to be 90. I think most people here are celebrating his incredible career and how he moved and inspired many of us. His death WILL create more awareness about drugs and start many important conversations. Oh, and your attitude of "fuck all worthless addicts" is truly disgusting, particularly at this time. Ignorant is right.

Never said "fuck all worthless addicts" and neither did Masterdebator88, so thanks for proving the fact that you are the ignorant one. I'm referring to the posts in regards to demonizing heroin instead of facing the fact that thousands of people die everyday to it, and it's up to the individual's choice. Doesn't matter if he's an acclaimed actor or junkie, I don't find it necessary to morn a man who was playing Russian roulette with his life one needle at a time. I wish his death would cause

He did try to get help for his drug addictions. They started very early in his life and was a demon that he battled but couldn't beat. The fact that you are calling his children's dead father a "retard" and saying he "deserved to die" is disgusting.

No one is asking you to feel remorse, but there's no need to piss on someone's grave. He's dead, take your dickhead comments to a different page that isn't celebrating his career and mourning losing him.
