Actor and director Richard Attenborough has passed away at age 90

08.24.2014

Legendary actor and director Richard Attenborough passed away today, presumably by natural causes at age 90. My generation may know him best as John Hammond in JURASSIC PARK or as Kris Kringle in MIRACLE ON 34TH STREET. The icon was one of Britain's leading actors, before becoming a highly successful director. His career spanned six decades having appeared in movies like BRIGHTON ROCK and THE GREAT ESCAPE. With directing duties, he was best known for GANDHI starring Ben Kingsley; which went on to win 8 Oscars including Best Picture and Best Director. It has been reported that Attenborough has been in a nursing home with his wife for a number of years, with deteriorating health.

I remember watching CHAPLIN so often as a kid that I thought Robert Downey Jr. was actually Charlie Chaplin. We watched GANDHI in school and for a few months after we all seemed to be inspired by the message of peace; that is what great movies do. It's not often you get a great talent behind and in front of the camera.

I'll never forget learning for the first time after watching JURASSIC PARK that Attenborough was responsible for so many great movies as well as letting dinosaurs run amuck; he truly was a creator. He will be greatly missed; thankfully his legacy will live on forever in the beautiful world of film.

RIP

I watched Chaplin a few weeks ago and thought it had a charm that is missing from biopics nowadays. I grew up with Jurassic Park and will always remember him as John Hammond. Life will always find a way...

It is sad

Although every one must go at some time it is always very sad when one was such a contributor to films and many's childhoods like Attenborough was. Here's to a wonderful man who had what many would agree lived a full life, spared no expense.

Jurassic Park defined my childhood and Mr. Attenborough has played a great role in making the movie convincing as Hammond. R.I.P. Richard Attenborough :(

I can only wish to go out with such a legacy. Congrats on a successful career. When I go, i want to ride through my pearly gate in a 1993 Explorer and hear Richard tell me, "Welcome to Jurassic Park".

Reading on IMDb, I didn't realize just how much of a behind-the-scenes contribution to British showbiz Sir Richard had made, and for that I have an even greater admiration for him. He was always a force in front of the camera, and while Gandhi is probably his greatest directorial achievement (note, I've only seen four of them), it's also a film I feel can be compared with the best of David Lean.

RIP to one of the great showmen of cinema.

Wow...What A Lineup...

Thank you kind Sir for all the wonderful films that you were a part of. I thank you so very much for two of my faves, Ghandi (which I still love) and Chaplin. Thanks for the acting parts as well "Big X"!

Farewell to a tremendous talent. If you schmoes have never seen the film "Magic" he directed starring Anthony Hopkins, Ann-Margret and Burgess Meredith, I highly recommend it.

Magic is one scary film. It scares me more than Child's Play.

death sucks...

Just popped on to see the weekend box office, and get more bad news. Too much death lately, just had my aunts funeral yesterday, she was only 51, but I guess 90 years is a pretty good life span. May Kelly and him both rest in peace.

RIP. Always thought his casting in Jurassic Park was Spielberg's way of trying to re-capture the magic Truffaut brought to Close Encounters. Attenborough certainly did.

It would be a nice touch if Jurassic Park 4 featured a statue in tribute of Hammond, treating him as kind of a Walt Disney figure.
