Actors and crew attacking IMDB for listing their real ages

Welcome to the strangest controversy of the moment. If you don’t know what the IMDB is, you probably aren’t reading this right now, but the movie database is under fire from Hollywood for something that seems rather absurd.

A bunch of Hollywood guilds, led by the WGA, are leading a charge against IMDB, saying that their posting of actual ages of the various crews and casts of films will lead to age discrimination in an industry based on youth. IMDB’s response?

IMDb is committed to being the most comprehensive source of film, TV and celebrity information…Customers of IMDb trust that when they use our website, they are receiving comprehensive and accurate biographical information. When we are made aware of information that can be verified as inaccurate, we remove from IMDb, as nothing is more important to us than customer trust.

I don’t believe IMDB is in the wrong here, as I don’t see this as a privacy violation for people who have put themselves in the public eye. I will admit though, often being quite surprised when I see how old actors really are, and I could see how this could affect casting decisions for actors who aren’t as well known as others.

Another problem is that IMDB often gets their info wrong, and the birthdate might not even be accurate some of the time. It’s notoriously impossible to get IMDB to change anything in a remotely timely manner, which I imagine would get pretty frustrating for some.

I doubt anyone is referencing IMDB to verify the age of potential actors in their productions. They can determine for themselves whether the person's look is right, just like they've always done.

In other news, I can see both sides of this argument. I can understand why they're so paranoid because this society is very very very age obsessed, BUT IMDB is a Database, so they want to give as much comprehensive information as possible especially now that they've turned in to a tool for the industry.

I really could care less, but I will say Hollywood should come to terms with the fact that you age and get older and less desirable in some cases. However Hollywood shouldn't complain since they have the money to workout all day, get skin treatments and botox and surgeries and eat healthy every day of the week. Not all of them do it but how does Catherine Zeta Jones get younger with age? Exactly. . . .pay to stay youthful.

As for the people I know in the entertainment industry who are in a position to hire and greenlight, imdb is not a consideration or even a forethought.

As for the people I know who are struggling to get noticed and possibly wonder if their listed age is prohibiting them - for some reason and imdb credit is a badge of honor or a validation like saying you are a part of SAG (easier than it sounds to join that one).

It's horribly out of date because I'm neither a famous [link] nor do I wish to spend the $15/month for IMDBpro so I can submit credits myself.

I also can't think of anyone I know in the industry ever getting hired from an IMDB page. The only thing I can sympathize with the actors on, is I would just bothered by having my birthday posted publicly online. Privacy is a good thing.

Most of my information listed (birthdate, state born, town etc) is incorrect on IMDB and they will not change it. It might be because there ARE Five Heather Chase's, but after two years of trying to get things corrected, with no luck- I've hired a lawyer. If WGA can win, so can I-

So basically whoever is on the "Lets Sue IMDB" bandwagon are a bunch of people who need public validation in order to retain their suspension of disbelief that they'll stay young as long as they're PERCEIVED to be young. If that's the case, seriously, all you need is the term "age is in the mind". And yes, I agree, if you look like Monica and you're 45, there's some serious flaunting to be done because chances are the person next to you in the same age is dealing with sagginess already.

What a bunch of whinny crybabies!

I absolutely love IMDB visiting it at least once a day. I've written 250 mini reviews & rated probably 10 to 15 thousand movies & TV shows. 9 times out of 10 I read other peoples reviews before renting or going to see something. My only complaint on the site is how they consistently put the main user review w/somebody who has written 1 review in total. Gee something for them to gain? It's obvious people involved in some of the garbage give 10/10 for an obviously piece of junk film. As far

Oh please. IMDb is great if you want to look up actors and what movies they've been in. Anywhere you look for a "Top" Anything list, it's completely subjective and will never cater to YOUR opinion. IMDb is a great website for what it is.
