Actress Danai Gurira is cast as Michonne in AMC's The Walking Dead!

03.19.2012by:

After last night's stunning season 2 finale of AMC's THE WALKING DEAD, the network announced the casting of Danai Gurira as Michonne, one of the most prominent characters in the series. Gurira is best known as Jill in HBO's original series TREME, bringing a solid dramatic gravitas to the Walking Dead character, which will be sorely needed if the events of the comic are any indication.

Kirkman had this to say about how Michonne will be portrayed in the series:

She will be very similar to her comic-book counterpart. Most of the characters as they’ve been translated into TV are pretty much exactly the same character. Andrea is Andrea, Rick is Rick and Michonne is going to be Michonne. Now, the stories that we’re going to tell with her are going to be somewhat different at times. The show has always followed the comic book to a large extent, it just has different divergences from time-to-time and we’re definitely going to continue that in the third season. But the fans have expectations for Michonne, and I can say with full knowledge that their expectations are going to be met. They need not worry.

Many fans have been eagerly anticipating the arrival of Michonne on the hit show and her final appearance was nothing less than a perfect tease for the next season. Michonne is as integral as Rick Grimes in the comic series and her involvement with the group is nothing less than game changing, especially with the amount of badassery she brings to the table. Along with the reveal of the prison that the group will occupy in season three of THE WALKING DEAD, the casting of the villain, The Governor, also leads into what is sure to be the best season of the show so far.

Most fans of the comic will attest that the Prison/Governor storyline and its conclusion are the biggest gut punch of the series. For me, series creator Robert Kirkman has yet to top that arc.

And worry I won't. After two seasons, THE WALKING DEAD finally feels like it's found its pace and is headed right into one hell of a sprint. THE WALKING DEAD returns this fall on AMC with a 16-episode order.

Check the video below from AMC to hear some revelations from the cast about what to expect from season 3:

Extra Tidbit: I'm curious how fans of the show who haven't read the comics felt about the ending of season 2. It was huge for fans of the book, but I'm wondering if the impact was as great for those who've never read it. Thoughts?

SPOILER ALERT ANYONE????

Mutherfucker, how about "We're gonna reveal that the secret character is a black woman, that she has a pivotal role with Rick, blah blah blah".

God damn it, not all of us have read the comic all the way through! So to answer your "extra tidbit", the show is awesome, and the ending was spectacular until you decided to ruin the suspense and tell me who is under the cloak without a spoiler warning.

Oh, but having read issue #1 (only), I'm glad Shane finally died. I was pretty tired of

Having not read the comics I notice in this pic that she has braids, but the actress does not. I hope she keeps the braids cause the look reminds me of Afro Samurai, which I love!!

I'd love to see some celebrity cameos ala zombieland! your thoughts!

I've never read the comics, and I can tell you that when I saw that BA hooded person slice up those walkers I was in awe! It made it even better to see her holding chains with two pet walkers! I can't wait for season three! I almost feel not having read the comics makes it better, cause you don't know what to expect. Your thoughts.

Well it was about time something happened on this show!
As a reader of the comics from the start it's an understatement to say that the show fell short more often than not. And yes, it dragged for the most part of season 2 after a so-so first season.
BUT, after the last 3 or 4 episodes of the second season my faith in renewed! I hope all involved with the show can keep up the pace and good work for the 3rd season as it's a promising one. And I hope they won't shy away from all the crazy

Oh, and to those calling other "trolls" and making fun of people not sharing the same opinion as the "winning/popular color": Isn't a place like the "strikeback" supposed to be where we give our opinion? Positive or negative? Sure, some, sometimes, bitch and complain just for the sake of doing so and can be pretty annoying at times. But sometimes I find a lot of "schmoes" here on Joblo just as equally annoying when they feel the need to yell "TROLL!" left and right at others. If not worst than that sometimes.

The season 2 ending was much better than the season 1 ending. I have never read the comic (but i plan to start!) and i liked the introduction of the new character.

I was bullshit about the first half of the season being so slow and lacking serious zombie mayhem, but this 1 episode restored my faith completely in the series and i for one cant wait for the 3rd season

I never read the comics but I knew the Prison and The Governor were huge story arcs and that they were coming to S3. I had no idea about this Michonne chick and when she saved Andrea i jumped up and was like OMG who the fuck is this???? I immedietly goggled walking dead chick with sword and found out who she was. I'm super-stoked for next season to say the least.

p.s. these ads are really fucking annoying now. If I accidentally scroll over them with my mouse the damn videos start

The show is here to stay people. It's a phenomenon both ratings wise, critical wise, and pop culture wise. Deal with it.

There are still people watching this crap show?
Season 1 was okay, first episodes of 2 awful.
Weren't all people on the net complaing and whining about the showrunner who left (the one who did the most overrated movie ever created)?
Anyway, bad show, but will have to catch up with the last 4 episodes one day.. (or not).

I was so hyped when she showed up! I knew she was coming, so the entire time I was anticipating her arrival. Then (spoiler) she finally shows up and saves Andrea's ass. Very awesome scene! And I like Andrea even more now for fighting so hard to stay alive. Her scene was one of the best in the season.

I Thought it Was...

... A really good season finale. (SPOILERS - Read at your own risk). It had an ass load of action, brutal zombie kills, brutal human kills, a barn burning, Andrea caving in a zombie's skull with a handgun, Rick giving the survivors what for and an awesome zombie beheading with a samurai sword wielding chick. I am so happy that Rick finally cowboy-ed up to the group and showed them that he wasn't a punk like Shane had them all believe. Now the survivors (like Herschel, Glenn and Daryl) know Rick

As a comic book reader, I am dying to start The Walking Dead books but, as I haven't yet, I'm going to stick with the tv show till they're further along then start reading the comics.

I thought it was pretty good episode. Hate Lori more and more each day. Wondered where the Herschel's never-ending 12-guage is available for purchase. Had a new hate for kids thanks to Carl. Glad Glenn finally nutted up to Maggie and told her how he felt. And Rick putting his foot down and starting the "Ricktatorship" as I've heard it called was due.
