Adam McKay planning border patrol comedy with Will Ferrell & John C. Reilly

01.22.2016

Adam McKay is receiving some well-deserved praise with his latest film, THE BIG SHORT, having nabbed Academy Award nominations for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Director. If you were worried that the ANCHORMAN director would now focus on more dramatically-driven stories, you can put those fears to bed. Indie Wire had a few words with the man, and from the sound of it, he'll be back to his usual hijinx with some familiar faces in no time.

Adam McKay on his next project:

I’m actually talking with [Will] Ferrell and John C. Reilly about doing a comedy about two guys who go down to defend America's borders against the immigrants, and I’m pretty excited about it. We actually have Jesse Armstrong who wrote IN THE LOOP - [he’s] delivering a draft, I think, next week.

Regarding the hand-held style of THE BIG SHORT:

I was amazed you could get good laughs [with that style]. The theory in comedy is that you have to frame very traditionally so the performance or the logic is what gets the laugh, but I dunno, I’m thinking with this next movie going more handheld than I’ve ever gone.

McKay has always struck me as an intelligent filmmaker and I've always enjoyed watching interviews or listening to commentaries with the man. With that said, I'll watch anything he directs BUT I'd be lying if I said I didn't want more comedies in the vein of ANCHORMAN or STEP BROTHERS. Having Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly as your leads is a hell of a start!

Let's see.....

It will be too ignorant, clumsy, bigoted rubes who hate people because they don't know any better. They'll find that most of the immigrants are wonderful women and children and have their hearts warmed by the genuine sincerity these people display in their desire to come here, work hard, and follow the law. In the end they'll realize how stupid they were for ever thinking anything different.

Excuse me now while I go puke up my lunch.

OK, that movie sounds horrible. Like a bad Todd Phillips movie. I get that you don't like Adam McKay and his politics, though, so whatever.

Am I the only one who feels kinda bored with yet another pairing?

Don't get me wrong. I enjoyed their last two pairings as much as the next guy, but after Daddy's Home was a super bland reteaming of Ferrell and Wahlberg. I guess I'm just tired of most repeat teamups in general, no thanks in part to Adam Sandler constantly putting his Siamese butt buddies in his movies instead of teaming up with people with balls who in turn might make Sandler grow some balls. Speaking of, wasn't Sandler rumored for a movie with Ferrell at one point? Ferrell could make Sandler

The Big Short was one of my favorite movies this year (I have many), thanks to McKay keeping one foot grounded in comedy. That said, getting back together with Will Ferrell is always welcome news (though Ferrell probably needs this more than McKay). It'll be interesting to see how they broach the issue of immigration, though it will likely upset a few people.
