Adam Sandler to play Andy Samberg's dad in upcoming comedy

4 years agoby:

SNL stars past and present Adam Sandler and Andy Samberg have signed on to star in the upcoming comedy I HATE YOU DAD, which would star Sandler as Samberg's rather difficult father. As Samberg prepares to get married, dad causes nothing but problems for the bride-to-be.

Sandler bought the rights to the script, originally written by David Caspe, and had David Wain and Ken Marino (ROLE MODELS) work on a rewrite. Currently there's no director attached but if Sandler's smart, he'll avoid his usual crew of capable but limited directors like Frank Coraci and Dennis Dugan and have Samberg bring in some of the Lonely Island crew (neither Akiva Shaffer nor Jorma Taccone have directed a film since their debuts, HOT ROD and MACGRUBER, respectively).

Frankly I'm a little surprised that Samberg and Sandler, who have somewhat similar comedic sensibilities, have taken this long to spark to a project together. While I've grown tired of Sandler's comedies lately (FUNNY PEOPLE being the exception to that rule), I think Samberg has a ton of untaped potential (HOT ROD being the exception to that rule as is tapped into all of his potential and made it one of the most underrated comedies of the last decade).

Sandler recently wrapped JACK AND JILL, a comedy where he'll dress up in drag (.....), while Samberg can be seen next in FRIENDS WITH BENEFITS.

Extra Tidbit: The new album from Lonely Island will be available later this year.

Sounds like an inspired pairing.

Sandler needs to pick this over that third movie with Kevin James he was announced to do. I get that he's loyal to his friends, but he needs to mix it up a bit. Based on having Samberg as his costar and David Wain and Ken Marino as writers, hopefully this is a step in the right direction.

"LIKE"

Samberg got me watching SNL again. Hot Rod is one of those movies I can put in and still laugh out loud.

Hot Rod is one of my all time favorite comedies! And that is awesome news about the new Lonely Island CD, i rock "SPace Olympics" all the time!

As for Sandler, I will always see his movies, they just happen to entertain me, granted his last 2 with Dugan (Zohan and Grown Ups) were lackluster, but I still enjoyed them.

This sounds like a quality flick, hopefully they get Jorma or Akiva to direct, Macgruber was also insanely hilarious and deserved more fame!

Oh my God holy shit. This sounds awesome, I'm not even kidding. Sounds like another step forward for Samberg (I loved Hot Rod), and a possible redemption for Sandler.

Brilliant!

great pairing. i agree that Sandler's usual directors should stay away. like's been said before, Hot Rod and MacGruber are incredibly hilarious and underrated, so either Jorma or Akiva could handle this. or writer David Wain.

Sandler+Samberg=Sandberg!

I agree with Mike about not really loving any of Sandlers movies except for Funny People which was a really good film. I think it was a good first step that Sandler made by getting the script rewritten by the team that brought us 2007s hilarious Role Models. Second smart step was getting Samberg in on this, so Adam please make a smart third step by not involving one of your usual shitty directors and maybe try something new by letting one of the directors listed above take the reins on this

Okay, I like these two guys, think they're both funny. But Im curious....how is Sandler going to play Sambergs father? Are they gonna use the same kind of old man effects from that Remote movie? Im surprised this question hasn't been brought up. I realize that these are movies and this sort of thing can be done, but these guys aren't so far apart in age that they would appear as a father/son without some sort of work done on Sandler to make him appear older. The guy still looks like he's in his

Saw Sandler on Conan not too long ago and he still has that Billy Madison/Happy Gilmore sense of humor, i don't understand why he decides to make shit instead.

Loved Hot Rod and MAcgruber, those guys are one of the few bright spots left on SNL
