Adam Sandler to take a dramatic turn in Tom McCarthy's The Cobbler

Sep. 19, 2013by: Alex Maidy

Adam Sandler has become a laughingstock but not in a good way. The buffoonish actor who started his movie career with BILLY MADISON and HAPPY GILMORE was not exactly the type of actor you would expect to make quality films. He seemed to be headed on the path of movies like, well, GROWN UPS. It was when Sandler began showing his skills with more dramatic moments in movies like THE WEDDING SINGER that he gained the interest to be cast in movies like REIGN OVER ME, SPANGLISH, and PUNCH DRUNK LOVE. Now, he looks to be taking another dramatic turn.

Sandler is close to joining Tom McCarthy's THE COBBLER which is rumored to be a modern day tale of a shoe man who has the ability to metaphysically step into the lives of the people whose shoes he repairs. THE COBBLER looks to start filming this year in advance of McCarthy's Catholic Church scandal movie SPOTLIGHT and Sandler's turn in Jason Reitman's MEN WOMEN AND CHILDREN.

I was a big proponent of Adam Sandler being nominated for Best Actor for Paul Thomas Anderson's PUNCH DRUNK LOVE. It truly showed his ability as an actor, something that is overshadowed by his reliance of pee and poop jokes. I respect comedic actors who try to stretch themselves dramatically, but so far I have only seen Will Ferrell and Robin Williams pull it off successfully. Here's hoping that THE COBBLER is the movie to do that for Sandler.

Could be good. Never saw Punch Drunk Love, heard nothing but good things though. I really liked him in Reign Over Me and Spanglish was alright, definitely not great. I'd definitely like to see Sandler try his hand at movies like this. Whether he fails or succeeds, it would just be nice to see him try something different than dick and fart jokes for once.

Punch Drunk Scene

adam sandler makes money. he's a business man and business is a-boomin'. can't blame him, just don't pay to see his movies.

on a lighter note, that punch drunk scene has given me enough reason to watch that movie again this weekend. that scene is awesome (bc of PSH of course).

He should be doing this more

He's pulled it off very well before. He's got enough cash selling his dumb sh*t he might as well stick to more roles like this.

I'm all for Adam Sandler flexing his acting muscles. And Tom McCarthy is a terrific director who knows how to get the best performances from his actors.

Let's hope he gets the role and hits it out of the ballpark! I'd like to see something different from him for a change.

Bill Murray, Jamie Foxx, Tom Hanks, Jim Carrey, Whoopie Goldberg.

Pretty sure I could name a lot more...

Would love to see him do more dramatic roles. When he actually tries, he can actually give a great performance.

And therefore, I still think Reign Over Me is his best film and performance.

I really think Sandler could benefit from taking dramatic roles more often, he has proven that he can actually act. He can't play the man child forever.

Define comedic actor, because plenty have been able to stretch themselves dramatically. Let's not forget the star of bosom buddies has two oscars.

Between Man on the Moon and Eternal Sunshine, I think Jim Carrey has also stretched himself to dramatic roles successfully as well.

This is most certainly excellent news, but there's still something I'd like to say.

As a longtime Sandler fan who has certainly become disgruntled at his propensity to cater to the lowest common denominator, I must certainly applaud his choice to do this, since between this and the Jason Reitman film, two back-to-back drama films for Sandler is practically unheard of. That being said, it highlights a problem I have with him. As someone, like most others, who have enjoyed his earlier comedies, I don't like the fact that he only goes outside his box for dramas. I'm still waiting

I'm still waiting for the day that he goes outside his box for a comedy, like that football movie with Will Ferrell he is/was attached to.

This is the best movie news of the day.

After Reign on Me Sandler should have made the transition out of comedy to drama, doing maybe one Happy Madison production every two to three years. He didn't.

Now years later, he finally decided to take another one! I'm stoked, but I feel he waited to long.

Instead of being dissapointed or hateful towards Sandler for the years of garbage he has put out, I have kind of weirdly started respecting him, how many people in his position can truly say they make every decision in life with the

maybe he just has really bad decision making skills when it comes to movies, or a bad agent.
