Adi Shankar tells us what needs to happen before we see a sequel to Dredd

03.05.2015

Despite so many movie fans loving DREDD and trying to get the word out, the likelihood of a sequel is almost non-existent. DREDD was made on a budget of $50 million, not huge in the grand scheme of blockbusters, but it only managed to rake in $35.6 million…worldwide. That’s not a very good incentive for producers to get a sequel made.

Adi Shankar, who’s been in the news lately for his Power Rangers and James Bond fan-films, was a producer on DREDD and wants a sequel every bit as much as its biggest fans do. However there are many reasons why this probably won’t happen, namely that it’s next to impossible to get a studio interested in producing a sequel to a film that lost everyone money. Duh, we all know that, but what actually needs to happen for a film to get financed?

Adi Shankar put together a video that explains the process in a little more detail:

I count myself among the legions (on second thought, maybe we’re not that big) of DREDD fans who would love to see a sequel, especially since Karl Urban expresses his desire to return almost every chance he gets, but have resigned myself to the fact that it probably won't happen.

Hollywood can suck a dick

With all the money they got, they can spare some, and make this happen. Just give us something, anything. it doesn't even need to be made with so much money.

Dredd 2 with Urban as TV mini-series!

I don't understand why Shankar never brought this up? Spark a deal with Netflix or Amazon, or hell Starz (it worked for Evil Dead 4) were none of these factors mess with would the content or marketabilty. Dredd has legs, it just needs the right approach.

Sequel would be nice...

Seeing how we can get multiple sequels to Scary Movie, and a sequel to Haunted House... and Dredd is a much better movie than any of that crap. Side note: Adi Shankar reminds me of Matthew Patel.

I liked "Almost Human". Urban seems to not be able to get a break these days.

It was th marketting and 3d that killed it.

I totally refused to see it in 3d and feel sorry for those over in the States who were left with no choice but that option. If 3d is going to used it should be as an enhanced option and not the only option. A Dredd sequel can work, and with the existing team, if they are less gimmicky and make a straight up movie.
Who knows? Maybe the new Bladerunner will ignite interest in that type of genre to renew interest in a sequel. Well, provided Harrison Ford is still up for a new Bladerunner. Get

DREDD to me was one of those movies that you like but none of your friends seem to get. Kind of like Serenity, for better or worse. It's a fan-based movie, and unsurprisingly Dredd fans are not significant enough to bring in box office success.
The only option left is to reboot the franchise with a flashier director and a PG-13 script, put in as many well known actors in it as you can, and market it as a standard superhero flick.

Yeah. I don't want to see that movie. Especially if you were to use Dredd and superhero in the same sentence. That last sentence just sent a chill up my spine and goes totally against all strips from 2000ad, never mind Dredd.

great video, Shankar

seems super cool. I don't get why they don't just give up on a movie sequel already... just do a TV series sequel with Urban. Like on Netflix or something. Start out with a 6 ep first season or something then if it works keep going with 8 or 10 ep seasons

Tha'ts a really good idea. Why hasnt anyone else brought that up yet. And Netflix would probably be willing to do it in a heartbeat.

That's unlikely to happen either, considering how Almost Human swiftly got the ax.

This is actually a really educational little video. Granted, I knew the this stuff, but Shankar is an entertaining guy and makes it not so boring.

Bummer that Dredd won't get the sequel treatment. I think they never should've made it in 3D. That was still a pretty new technology at the time, and Dredd just wasn't a big enough property globally to warrant theaters tying up all their 3D-equipped theaters to give it the release it deserved. I think it might've at least recouped its losses if it
