Advice to those remaking Carrie: They're all gonna laugh at you!

May. 20, 2011by: Mike Sampson

Ten years must be a little too long for the public to have to wait to see a CARRIE movie (at least according to Hollywood) so MGM is returning to the well and developing another adaptation of Stephen King's classic 1974 novel. Despite a horrible Broadway production in 1988, a horrible sequel in 1999 and an equally as horrible TV movie in 2002, MGM is hoping to breathe new life into a franchise that peaked in 1976 with the admittedly classic Brian De Palma film.

Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, who recently signed on to rewrite "Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark" as it went on hiatus, will write a new script for the studio. MGM will team with Screen Gems, Sony's genre division, for the film in an attempt to revitalize their film output. (They also recently agreed to partner with Sony on THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO.)

It's unclear whether this new version will be a more an adaptation of King's first published novel. Either way, De Palma's version was fairly faithful to the book, at least as much as a film can be. Somewhat ironically, King is not particularly a fan of "Carrie" saying it's like a cookie baked by a first grader: "tasty enough, but kind of lumpy and burned on the bottom."

Speaking of King, he's heard about the remake too and had this to say: "The real question is why, when the original was so good? I mean, not CASABLANCA, or anything, but a really good horror-suspense film, much better than the book." My thoughts exactly.

So if they're going to go ahead with a CARRIE remake, who should star? Dakota Fanning?

Another terrible hollywood idea. Still, most people are going to go see it no matter how bad it is because people, for some unknown reason to me, need to compare or mock the new. I say just ignore them, don't give them a ticket sale or the seat count.

I'm hoping for a shot by shot remake of the original, just like Psycho cause that wound up so well. Seriously, what can they really do to make this any different, I really hope no one watches this so when they remake the remake of the remake in 2021 they'll just kill themselves first.

I can't think of anything new for them to explore with a remake of this movie...why not just re-release the original in theaters after cleaning up the video quality a bit, ala The Exorcist re-release a while back (or even the limited release run of Nightmare on Elm Street a few years ago)? This is obviously a money thing, so re-release would be far cheaper than a remake no one will give a shit about.

Oh for FUCK'S sake!

Why why WHY??? What is the point? The book is good and the original movie is good, but there is NO reason to remake this again. Its not even one of King's more complex stories. There's not much more they can do with the story. WHY???

This whole remake thing is getting fuckin ridiculous.

I just rewatched this last week and all I can say is...why? They already remade it and it went down in flames. Leave it alone. I'm with King on this.

Not sure that this is a good idea, but they can't cast better than Dakota Fanning... As a side note, what are the chances of this new version actually being good enough to get an academy award nod for an actor like the original? Somehow horror movies can't get that kind of respect these days.
