Strike Back below!
by: Mike Sampson Dec. 14, 2009

We'll have our own Best of the Year lists coming to you very shortly. I've seen people's choices and there are definitely some surprises on there so you'll want to stay tuned for that. In the meanwhile, the American Film Institute (AFI) has released their Top 10 films of the year and while there are some obvious choices (UP IN THE AIR, PRECIOUS), there are also some surprises including CORALINE and THE HANGOVER. I love any year that can have two animated films in any given Top 10 and what's funny is that there easily could be more than that.

I'll leave the list below (presented in alphabetical order) and remind you to check back tomorrow morning as the Oscar race really heats up with the announcement of the Golden Globe nominations.

AFI's Top 10 films of 2009:

- CORALINE
- THE HANGOVER
- THE HURT LOCKER
- THE MESSENGER
- PRECIOUS: BASED ON THE NOVEL PUSH BY SAPPHIRE
- A SERIOUS MAN
- A SINGLE MAN
- SUGAR
- UP
- UP IN THE AIR

Am I the only one who didn't get into The Hangover? I actually didn't finish watching it as I fell asleep...

Of course like any top 10 list this one will also cause controversy. I thought The Hangover was fantastic but not top 10 worthy. I'm also not sure I'd put Coraline in the top 10, even though I really, really enjoyed it.

I've only seen Up and Coroline from that list. Up sure, it was great. But Coroline was average at best. The first half was ok and the second half I felt like I was watching a video game with Coroline going through one boss battle after another.

I think it's nice to see a bit of a different top 10 list. Not everyone with the same shit over and over again. Inglorious is definitely one of the top 10 of the year, but it's made over 100 million, will surely get many Oscar nominations and will have the highest of praise for years to come. Whereas, an incredible film like The Messenger won't so I think whatever it takes to get a few small...

Whereas, an incredible film like The Messenger won't so I think whatever it takes to get a few small films notice is a good thing. As for Moon, it's incredible but it'll never get recognition where due and I think everyone's known that since it came out. (500) Days of Summer isn't top 10 material. It's cute, but it's got nothing on Hurt Locker or Inglorious or Serious Man.

Wow...the AFI really loves crap. I've seen every movie on that list except for A Single Man, and in my opinion all of those movies suck except for Coraline, The Hangover, and Up. How is it that District 9 and Star Trek didn't make the cut?

Hey PuffCity, go fuck yourself! I was expressing my opinion, that's what people do on this site. Everyone has their own personal opinions, and I was just submitting mine.

P.S. So if we're blasting each others opinions, then I'd like to say that 500 Days of Summer was a pretentious and average chick flick, nothing more.

I agree with you 100%. I thought A Serious Man and The Hurt Locker were both terrible movies. The bodybomb sub plot in the Hurt Locker should have actually gone somewhere, instead that plot was left unanswered.

so youre saying all of them except 4, so that makes 6 out of 10. retard.
and so what if they dont agree with your taste? i personally dont care for D9 and Star Strek, but i'm also a sci-fi hater. i could piss and moan that 500 days of summer (my favorite movie of the year so far) is not on the list, but in the end of the day, i dont give a shit, and theres no reason for you to as well

I can understand a mixed view on A Serious Man, but The Hurt Locker and The Messenger are damn good films. You should definitely check them out again sometime.

AFI tries to include every genre on their list. There is no surprise here, though I would have liked to see (500) Days of Summer on it.
