Agent Coulson will not appear in Age of Ultron but likely will in Avengers 3

07.08.2014

When we interviewed Clark Gregg regarding his directorial effort TRUST ME, the man who is Agent Coulson in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the ABC series AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. indicated he didn't know whether he would be in Joss Whedon's AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON or not. To this point, it still remains a mystery whether the plucky fan favorite would make his presence known to the super hero squad that thinks he is dead. According to one source, they will not find out next summer.

Total Film features an AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON story in their latest issue that claims the Avengers will not find out that Coulson is now the new director of S.H.I.E.L.D. following the events of CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER and the first season of AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. With the team facing the threat of Ultron, it is unknown to what extent S.H.I.E.L.D. business will be addressed, but this also will allow for Coulson's story to be developed for more seasons on the small screen as AVENGERS 3 is not slated to hit theaters until 2018 at the earliest.

While Coulson is popular with audiences, resolving his story too quickly limits TV prospects. Plus, fans of the show know the connections being made to the Kree which would fit much better with the assumed Thanos showdown coming in the third film in the franchise. But, you never know, a cameo could still happen.

AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON hits theaters May 1, 2015.

The guy is dead, and should've stayed that way

They should never have brought him back. Great call on that resurrection Joss.

He should've stayed dead.

I know the MCU is based on the comics and the comics do really wacky stuff (i.e. people usually never stay dead), but that's one rule they should've adhered to. I loved the guy, but bringing Coulson back completely cheapened his sacrifice in The Avengers while also lowering the stakes considerably in every subsequent movie. I stopped following Agents of Shield after the first 7 or 8 episodes so maybe that explains my mindset, but why get so invested in these characters if they can apparently

That said, if they do bring him back to the movie-verse, I'm fully on board with waiting until Avengers 3 to make the payoff that much more dramatic and emotional.

Him reappearing will make for a better payoff for Avengers 3. No need to have him appear in Avengers 2, since he is doing his own storyline on Agents of Shield. Wouldn't mind a cameo though to show that he is still watching, but from a distance (obviously).

I honestly miss Coulson's little scenes in the movies. I don't hate Agents of SHIELD, but if I had to choose between keeping Coulson in show instead of the movies, or stop the show and have him back in the movies, I'd probably choose the latter.

Age of Ultron has a lot going on already. I am fine with the plot staying under control. Coulson's absence means one less character to juggle and, possibly, bobble. The Avengers audience wants an Avengers 2 that is big but also focused and coherent.

true, but resolving his story too late (like say... in Avengers 3, which would be what... in 2018? SIX YEARS and TEN or ELEVEN movies after his death) would be even worse. I mean, will Agents of SHIELD even still be on then? Or still be relevant? Is it even relevant now? Not a comment on its quality at all, but is the audience really that big for it? Even with the MCU connection/Marvel name I just don't feel it's that popular or even that well known. I just don't think it's worth it. It

By Avengers 3 even I'm going to be like 'whatever, I don't even care anymore'. Even more so after I read the lame explanation as to his survival they revealed in Agents of SHIELD. The Lifemodel Decoy thing would've been way cooler, and fit in with the whole concept of Age of Ultron too.

I suppose he is too exclusively tied to the show to work backwards. Its a shame because I feel like the moment the Avengers see Coulson, especially Stark, should not be just glossed over

sounds understandable

i assume something like a post credit scene introducing him as the new head of SHIELD to the team, i can dig it. Gives them more time to get Agents of SHIELD out of the crapper and into a better show
