Agent Coulson will probably not appear in The Avengers: Age of Ultron

07.23.2013by:

Despite a huge fan following, it looks like Clark Gregg's character Phil Coulson will be relegated to AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. for the foreseeable future and will not be appearing in THE AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON. This shouldn't be much of a surprise given the character's death in THE AVENGERS serving as a key motivator in uniting the disparate heroes in a singular cause, but it would have been cool to see him back on the big screen.

Director Joss Whedon was asked about Coulson's potential return in an interview with the Associated Press and gave this explanation as to his absence:

He could. Right now itís not something Iím pursuing because I have so much going on in ĎAvengers 2.í Finding out that Coulson is alive would be an entire B story. And I already have too much movie. Thatís better than the other thing.

I would much rather get 23 weekly doses of Clark Gregg than a few fleeting scenes in theaters every few years. Whedon also explained that there will not be much major crossover between the ABC series and the Cinematic Universe as to allow them to grow on their own. I can see that changing in the event that either ratings flag on the television side or if fans react well to a character on the show having that role jump to a movie.

In either case, Marvel's empire is expanding and hopefully for the better. AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. premieres this Fall on ABC and THE AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON hits theaters on May 1, 2015.

I want to see him flip out on Nick Fury for getting his Cap card covered in blood.

I like Coulson as much as the next comic book movie geek and am glad he's in the TV series (if he's as effective as Giles was in Buffy - he'll do very well) but am okay with him not returning for the movies. I'm glad Marvel realise they need to push on now and not get distracted with...in the greater schemes of things...side stories like Coulson, that however neat/cool...are not really priority concerns.

He's got the TV show. And Lola the Flying Corvette. That should keep him happy for a bit.

Makes sense

After all, since all these previous movies are vaguely based on that Ultimates mini-series, which contains a Shield right-hand-man who turns out to be a cyborg, it would be awful if Avengers 2 stole the shows thunder by revealing their big secret ;)

I still think season 1 of the SHIELD show should have taken place before the events of Avengers, so you could still have Coulson but also still have him die in the avengers.

I would be fine with him not being in it. Have him come back in Avengers 3 and have it be in a dramatic event in which he has to save Tony, Captain, etc.

Sort of like how Gordon came back to life in The Dark Knight.

I honestly don't care

We're going into a sequel that will likely be darker and larger in scope. The finite inclusion of Coulson is of little to no concern to me.

I'm a little confused on timelines. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. starts this fall with Coulson alive and well. Age of Ultron come out summer 2015 and the Avengers still don't know Coulson is alive? So either Avengers 2 takes place before the S.H.I.E.L.D. show or Fury keeps it a secret from the big guys that Coulson lives (which is something he would do).

He should be in it just so that the 'Avengers' sequel can compete with 'Amazing Spider-Man 2' and 'X-Men: Days of Future Past' for which movie has the most characters on screen at any one time.

Hmmmm.

So, Age of Ultron has no Hank Pym. And, Age of Ultron has no Agent "COOL!" Coulson. And, Age of Ultron has no Hulk. And, Age of Ultron has no Thanos apparently. And, Age of Ultron is not the Age of Ultron from the comics. And, Age of Ultron probably lacks a final battle between Captain Ultra and Ultron while the DC Universe's Ultra-Boy, Ultraa (that JLA guy), and Ultra-Humanite look on. I just hope that Age of Ultron meets fan expectations. I hope that the project respects the fans and their

Whedon has done an outstanding job so far with the cinematic Marvelverse. I have faith that he continues his appealing, outstanding films in the future.
However, if Whedon ever uses that common bullshit line "Well, you fucken fans need to understand that movies and movie adaptations are a business," I will find him! and punch him right in the teeth. An Avengers movie is not business for me or any other on-line commentator. If so, pay us members of the peanut gallery as consultants. If Disney ever changes Age of Ultron to "Age of Ul-Tron" to promote another Tron movie, I will consider it a chickenshit Mickey Mouse move(ment).

I'm fine w/ this.

I think that adding another story line in A2 would be to much and it would take away from the significance of the death from the first one.
