Ah crap, Pirates 4 cracks the top ten highest grossing movies worldwide

06.21.2011

What the hell people? You want them to keep making these movies forever? It seems so, as due to an extremely impressive, almost billion dollar worldwide draw, PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES has just beat out HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS to become the tenth highest grossing movie ever. Seriously?

When examining the other films on the list, this should comes as less of the surprise, as the last two PIRATES films make an appearance, as does Depp's ALICE IN WONDERLAND, another indicator of the public's misguided affections. Here's the whole rundown for those wondering.

1. AVATAR - $2.7B

2. TITANIC - $1.9B

3. LORD OF THE RINGS: RETURN OF THE KING - $1.1B

4. PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MAN'S CHEST - $1.066B

5. TOY STORY 3 - $1.063B

6. ALICE IN WONDERLAND - $1.02B

7. THE DARK KNIGHT - $1B

8. HARRY POTTER AND THE SORCERER'S STONE - $974M

9. PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: AT WORLD'S END - $963M

10. PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES - $956M

Strangely, the original PIRATES is way down the list at #48, despite almost everyone agreeing it's by far the best entry. Guess it was out of theaters before it had the chance to make a record-setting impression, but at the time, it still did infinitely better than anyone thought it would.

What is it about these movies, and in turn, Jack Sparrow? I thought the last one wasn't horrible, but it just didn't need to exist. Depp's Sparrow is a great character, but after four films, the gag has kind of worn thin. But even if that's the case, expect PIRATE 5 and 6 to be on the horizon without a doubt while the series can still command these kind of numbers.

See, that's all a matter of opinion though - something my 'news' certainly doesn't need. I love seeng editorials and write ups on films expressing either love or hate for them, that's all well and good and offers the writers a chance to throw their opinions out there, but by putting it in more and more news articles the site is becoming... I'm just saying, I don't have a problem with anyone expressing their opinion, but in the right place, doing it like this makes it look like this site is turning into more of an opinionated blog than a movie news site, regardless if the opinion is the one of the majority or not.

People who hate movies for the sake of the movies being made make me laugh. It's like they're upset about the movie's very existence. No one's putting a gun to your head and telling you to see the Pirates movies. Remember the days when people just reported on films to report on them and didn't have to give their opinion as well? Now everyone thinks their Ebert.

What are YOU guys not understanding that the amount f money a film makes is what makes studios demand those kind of movies? If BAD movies make A LOT OF MONEY more movies will be mold in the mold of a BAD MOVIE. SOOOOOOO, we want things like pirates 4 to tank, so things like Star Trek or some other pretty fucking good summer blockbuster like films can be made.

come on people

i don't think that the site is posting for people who care about quality of film, they are merely posting for those people who are interested in how much a movie can make. other than that the rest of the people seem to just want to fight. i mean seriously it would be like if i announced that i just bought the dark knight for 5 bucks. who cares in the end so everyone just chill and stop fighting over nothing, especially over a point that wasn't even the original topic

Why do people care how much money a movie makes? As if that's an indicator of the quality of a film.

It's not like anyone is forcing you to see the next Pirates movie. If some people enjoy them, let them have that. Unfortunately (or fortunately), not every movie can be about a Jew who overcomes their speech impediment and fights Hitler.

Opening box office numbers mean absolutely nothing to me. Shame, because I remember a time when movies were given much more time to gain audiences, build up a fan base, get the positive word of mouth going, and keep it moving in the positive direction. I guess all that's in the past with the advent of the internet, message boards, online critics, youtube, and everything else. Bye-bye classic moviegoing experience, hello instant gratification moviegoing experience.

I'm proud to say that I haven't seen a single one of those movies on the worldwide box office top ten list. I have no interest in any of them. And I honestly don't see the point in judging a movie by what it makes at the box office anyway. The amount of money a movie makes doesn't always equal the quality of it. It just represents the popularity of the movie at the time. Funny how most of the movies that were once heralded as "classics" when they came out, such as Alice in Wonderland, the

It's always how much money the filmmakers can pull in during the opening weekend, and then make endless [link] Thanks, but no thanks. I'll stick to my 60's and 70's movies instead.

I think the guys like me on this website doesn't judge a movie's quality by it's boxoffice.
But still, if you are PROUD of not seing ANY of these top ten films, what are you doing here? Honestly!
Like, I'm not into cars, but if there is a website for NASCAR where they show a list of the top ten fastest cars ever I would never write anything like "I hate cars"

I honestly can't tell you the last time I've been really pleased with a new release that I've seen in theatres. To me, it's a lot of the same old stuff. Remakes of already successful movies, sequels to movies that don't need them, and 3D that only drives up prices and offers nothing more for your dollar. No wonder I only go to the theatres maybe 2 or 3 times a year, if that. Just nothing good to see. But whatever floats your boat is cool. I'm not here to talk trash about anyone else's preferences. I'm just here to voice an opinion, and an unpopular one it would seem.

"Ah crap, Pirates 4 made money"

It's sad we think that.
I remember back in 2003 when Pirates 1 started to make real money this website wrote something like "Finally a fresh movie beside all these sequels".
And now "Pirates of the Caribbean" is one of the many sequels... Less and less originality with each movie...

I actually enjoyed all of them but, like Paul Tassi wrote, "the gag has kind of worn thin".

I don't get the hate for Pirates 4

Was it as good as the first? No, but I had a damn good time watching it and thought it had a great story. It's not a masterpiece but it's a fine addition to one of my favorite franchises.

I'll keep watching them as long as they keep making them

Well...that's assuming Geoffrey Rush and Johnny Depp are in there. I like the guy who plays Gibbs also, but Barboassa and Sparrow are the two reasons I continue to show up and throw my money at these films. Cannot beat two fantastic actors having a great time with such iconic and cartoon-like characters.

And this goes to show you the difference between the average film going audience and those who view movies as a higher form. Clearly, the majority loves Johnny Depp and Jack Sparrow. Personally, I thought the fourth POTC was just okay, but I won't harp on it. There are far worse films that make a ton of money (*ahemTwilightahem*). ..sigh..

This figures literally mean nothing. Basic economics will force one to consider something called inflation. A dollar today does not equal a dollar at any time prior to 2 years ago; not to mention ticket prices. And even if you consider this fact, it still operates under the assumption that the more sheeple pay to see a movie, the better or more credible it is. I respectfully say, bullshit.

Perspective

Domestically, it's by FAR the worst performing film of the series - even lower than the original movie - but it's the 3-D territories overseas that are pulling in huge numbers. It could gain almost a billion dollars alone in overseas intake. Which means, similar to the Bond series, it could continue forever as long as the worldwide market is strong enough. But will Depp want to hang around that long? Also, I think it's amusing that three of his worst films are in the top ten of all-time, yet

Also, I think it's amusing that three of his worst films are in the top ten of all-time, yet his best work - Ed Wood, Scissorhands, etc. - is the stuff that never reaches such heights. I'm expecting his Rum Diaries adaptation to struggle to even make a fraction of Pirates 4's intake.

On Stranger Tides did suck, yes, but...

...I think it's obvious the worldwide box office tallies are due to the series' popularity as opposed to the quality of the film in question, and we have Gore Verbinski to thank for that. Rob Marshall (and that new president of that branch of Disney or whatever it is) crapped all over PoTC by making it a safe product as opposed to the audacious franchise it was under Verbinski, who dared to push boundaries and challenge audiences. Some people hated "Dead Man's Chest" and "At World's End"

Some people hated "Dead Man's Chest" and "At World's End" because they were confusing, but for my money they have incredible, complex storylines and do "blockbuster" better than many other movies can hope to. Maybe "On Stranger Tides" is continuing to do well because of those audiences who found its predecessors confusing, but it got my money because I was excited for more - I love "Dead Man's Chest" and "At World's End" enough that I didn't care where a fourth one went, I just wanted more... what I didn't consider until I was in the theater watching the film was that Rob Marshall has no verve and the slightly new production team no heart. All this said, I would welcome a fifth PoTC... with the hope that Disney has learned from the reception of this fourth one, which fans such as myself are saying was lacking. Drop the lame side characters (that includes Cruz' character... though clearly she's been set up for further involvement) and get some more soul behind the camera. If Johnny and Geoffrey (and, fingers crossed, Orlando) are back, I'll shamelessly be there... but if it's another load, I wont hesitate to write another bad review.

Hehe, thanks - I shouldn't be surprised with the minuses, I guess (which reached -6 at one point, I think) but really, if you're a fan of the series, yeah you're gonna go... it's not your fault the movie wasn't up to par with its predecessors! In all honesty, I was a long-time PoTC hater myself before I gave the sequels a chance... loved them so much I eventually found a respect for the original and, well, here I am. Gimme more Flying Dutchman, baby.

Yeah, we have the international audience to thank for this. And frankly, who cares? We all know that box office is not relative to quality and we also know that even though tons of terrible big budget films will be made smaller studios and artists will still make great films. Heck, the 1st and 2nd Pirates movies are very enjoyable anyways.

Now Alice in Wonderland... that's another story.

Can't Blame America For This One

It seems the international audience loves these movies. While the grosses are less in America, they've gone up around the world. It's like the Ice Age movies. Those movies keep getting larger overseas.

I'm with JoBlo...

I went into ALICE with lowered expectations and they still got trampled for how fucking awful the movie was. The 3D was shit, Depp was meh, etc, etc.
As for Pirates, it's worn out. Move on. Unless the ghost of Dog (played by Frank Langella) from CUTTHROAT ISLAND comes back as an evil pirate demon as the next film's villain, I couldn't care less. Oh yes and put Christina Hendricks in a corset. Then I'd be ready for Pirates 5.

What blows my mind is that ALICE IN FUCKIN' WONDERLAND is the #6 top grossing movie of all-time!! I'm a huge Tim Burton fan, but that movie sucked ass. Wow...
