Alan Taylor agrees; Terminator: Genisys marketing has revealed too much

06.29.2015

If you've somehow made it this far without subjecting yourself to the reveals contained within TERMINATOR: GENISYS' spoiler-filled marketing campaign, you should probably do yourself a favour and quit reading this. Why not check out this article instead? That looks like fun. The rest of you are probably all too aware of some of the questionable choices that the marketing team behind TERMINATOR: GENISYS has made and it turns out that you're not alone, the director of TERMINATOR: GENISYS wasn't exactly pleased by those choices either.

Alan Taylor spoke with Uproxx about the upcoming Terminator film, and one of the topics they discussed was the game-changing reveal that John Connor (Jason Clarke) has become some sort of Terminator as Taylor definitely wasn't planning on that reveal becoming common knowledge before the film premiered:

I certainly directed those scenes with the intention that no one would know. One of my favorite moments – and I think Jason Clarke did a great job with it – is when he walks into the hospital in 2017 and everything from there until the turn, you’re supposed to think, Oh man, this is great. – I know there was kind of a challenging calculus going on in the heads of those who market this thing to decide that this was the right thing to do. I think they felt like they had to send a strong message to a very wary audience that there was something new, that this was going to new territory. They were concerned that people were misperceiving this as kind of a reboot, and none of us wanted to reboot two perfect movies by James Cameron. I think they felt they had to do something game-changing in how the film was being perceived.

When asked if he had been consulted before the trailer was released, Alan Taylor said that he "had a few heads ups and a few unpleasant conversations where I squawked about this or that" but in the end the revealing trailer went forward. As much as I dislike trailers which lay out the entire plot, TERMINATOR: GENISYS's decision to spoil itself has certainly got us talking more about it.

Has TERMINATOR: GENISYS managed to keep any surprises up their sleeves? You can find out on July 1, 2015.

Movie director has his head up his ass

He basically said the first movies were amazing, but he wanted to destroy them and everything they stood for.

This movie had the opportunity to pull a Back to the Future, have todays actors interact in scenes from the original movie and T2. But no, they had to reinvent the wheel, get new people to play old roles and fuck everything up. It makes no sense that Arnold was sent 30 years to far back in time. It makes no sense that these events haven't happened before because time travel has to

It makes no sense that these events haven't happened before because time travel has to adhere to either of two basic rules. Time is linear (we experienced every change already) or time is branching (multiple timelines made for each action).

This movie fucks up and pulls the same shit MIB3 made and has too many mistakes in just the trailers to keep my attention. It says time is linear but it can branch but ONLY if it's a big moment. That isn't how it works.

"none of us wanted to reboot two perfect movies by James Cameron."

No, you wanted to erase them instead. Goodbye T1 and T2, the only thing that 'exists' now is T5 and its awesome new timeline.

The T2 trailer showed way too much as well, and even gave away the twist that Arnold wasn't the villain. Cameron wasn't happy about that either. Yet, Cameron made a great film that stood on its own and didn't need a gimmicky surprise twist to make or break T2. Can that be said of Genisys?

Cameron is a competent director working on an original film. This is pure garbage that destroys the first two movies and says they never happened.

It makes no sense and just looks horrible.

LOL< this guy is seriously taking the risk of being blacklisted by Hollywood, he has directed 2 movies & talked trash about both, if this bombs, your career is over Mr. Taylor. I'll watch your silly little Terminator movie though, but remember they spoiled T2 also that Arnie was the good guy this time.

Can not please everyone

WHen the first trailer cam eout fan boys were whining a river about how the movie is going to suck because, they are experts at knowing what a movie is without even seeing it. SO the marketing team added some juicy stuff on new trailer and not they whining about to much spoiler info. All movies do this hell Avengers Ultron showed a whole lot of their movie and it still made bank, ALL i know the added twist has people talking in a positive way..Seriously how can you not want to watch this movie

Because it looked stupid, is a tired plot, and is currently at 33% on RT.

I second that Des. All the promo material did for me, was show how awful this movie was. This could possibly be the worst one of the lot.

It's not a bad idea if the twist in the film didn't really stick, since time travel plays a huge, vital aspect in the storyline. Perhaps Connor being a Terminator is only temporary and somehow Sarah and Kyle fix it? Because I still can't believe marketing would be that stupid to reveal a twist as big as that one.

No s***, Sherlock.

"Terminator: Genisys marketing has revealed too much." I also think the Japanese Ant-Man trailer has shown too much, but nowhere near as much as Genisys. If Genisys was The Crying Game, it would shown you the twist and ruined the surprise. I truly believe that the Genisys marketing team would've given away the ending to "The Sixth Sense" in the trailer had they been in charge.

I was real hard in avoiding it all but its near impossible. I'd have to switch to another email service besides Yahoo because god forbid they can go one day without spraying their main page with leaky info, every time I went to the movies I would have had to wait outside the room until I confident the trailers were finished, I actually closed my eyes and put my hands into my ears but it all came out anyway, you've got the spoilerish poster and this and that, it never ends.. Nice to read

Nice to read articles like this where at least the director acknowledge some of the mistakes made. Your the director, the head hancho behind a movie production, the marketing of a film can make or break your hard work, they ought to deserve a first look and approval over the trailers before release.

Yeah, it's pretty lame that they let that slip in the trailers, but to be honest, that doesn't ruing as much for me as the casting choice for Sarah Conner. I'm having a real tough time buying this actress in that role.
