Albert Brooks joins Ellen Degeneres and director Andrew Stanton for Finding Nemo 2

Feb. 12, 2013by: Paul Shirey

Add this to more underwhelming Pixar news for me, but apparently the studio is moving forward with the long-in-development sequel to FINDING NEMO and they've just secured their main attraction, Albert Brooks, who voiced the titular character's dad, Marlin, in the blockbuster film. Brooks, who apparently closed a deal for a nice payday to return, will once again join co-star Ellen Degeneres as Dory and director Andrew Stanton for another trip under the sea. Tentatively titled FINDING NEMO 2 and slated for a 2016 release, no story details are known, but it's likely the duo of Marlin and Dory will once again venture forth to locate that pesky, troublemaking Nemo.

Brooks is coming off a decent acting streak, especially for his role in the Nicolas Winding Refn thriller DRIVE, where he played a brutal mobster and his performance as a deadbeat dad in Judd Apatow's THIS IS 40. Director Andrew Stanton has had less luck in the live-action genre, as his JOHN CARTER failed to launch with audiences, despite being a fun flick. It's rumored that Disney will give him another go in the live-action chair as part of the deal to direct the NEMO sequel.

Normally, I like sequels, but they need to be worth the trip. It seems that Pixar has gotten franchise fever and are reluctant to push new and original movies like they have done in the past and that's disconcerting. I liked FINDING NEMO just fine, but do I need to a sequel? No. No more than I need to see more MONSTERS, INC. or CARS. Even BRAVE, as most of us know, was a Pixar reimagining of BROTHER BEAR. Let's hope that their upcoming THE GOOD DINOSAUR can bring back the magic.

FINDING NEMO 2 is slated for release sometime in 2016. Oh, and if you really want to taint your view of FINDING NEMO check out this article. You'll never watch the film the same again.

Extra Tidbit: What Pixar film would you most like to see a sequel to? I'd much rather prefer one for The Incredibles or Wall-E.

Cars 2 is the weakest Pixar film, but which makes it a more than alright movie. However, Toy Story 3 is beyond words. Its literally Pixar at its finest.

I agree with you on CARS 2 but TOY STORY 3 was incredible. If you didn't lose your mind over the incinerator scene or start tearing up at the end, consider yourself dead from the heart outwards.

Funny, because I thought the general consensus was that Toy Story 3 is a quality movie. You make it sound like it is a bad film.

But they found the mother fucker! End of story. C'mon Pixar, don't become evil. Stick to making original content. Yeah, Toy Story sequels were amazing, but that sequel lightning ain't gonna keep striking nice. Cars 2 shoulda been a wake-up call.

Pete Docter has a completely original Pixar flick coming our way.

To all the negative people...

...saying they should stick to being "original":

These films are mainly made for children and young adults. They don't care if they already found Nemo and the movie isn't original anymore. They just want to see their favorite animated characters going on another fun journey.

I think it's okay for people to be disappointed in Pixar. Giving people mediocre familiarity is the hallmark of every other animation studio that has chased after Pixar. To see that Pixar is potentially resigning itself to be another dreamworks animation that cashed in on its former greatness is reason to be disappointed.

I mean, if you value studios that strove for greatness. If you just want to see Shrek 7 or Ice Age 14, and grin slightly at familiar animation - then this story is cause

I have faith in Pixar & Stanton. Nobody knows the plot. It's not necessarily finding Nemo AGAIN. Not sure why there's so much negativity.

Aside from Cars (hate them both) every Pixar sequel has been high quality.

Incredibles

So basically the only Pixar movie that warranted a sequel is pretty much the only one not getting one?

I love Pixar and the magic they put into their films, but c'mon! If they can find a sequel for Cars, Monsters and Nemo then I don't see the problem in making another Incredibles. I'll still see Nemo 2 because its a Pixar movie but I find it hard to believe they haven't at least mentioned an Incredibles sequel at the Pixar studio

Ellen DeGeneres has been begging for a Finding Nemo sequel for forever and you know what, I don't think it's a terrible idea. The first film had memorable characters, an emotional story, fantastic design and locations, and was very, very funny. It would be a lot of fun for them to return to the world, and I'm glad Albert Brooks is back on board. They need to wrangle Willem Dafoe and Geoffrey Rush too!

Hmmm...I Think I Like This...

Out of all the Pixar movies, The Incredibles is the one just begging to be made into a sequel (or several), BUT this is the other Pixar movie that COULD have a sequel and it work.

I'm very interested in this idea. However, Disney and Pixar should green light "Incredibles 2" ASAP. It just makes sense.
