Albert Finney returns to acting for Bond 23

10.28.2011

The cast might be mostly rounded out now, but BOND 23, which may or may not be called SKYFALL, is still adding a few more roles here and there.

The latest one to be filled is a part for Albert Finney, an acting veteran of 50 years who has been in everything from BEFORE THE DEVIL KNOWS YOUR DEAD to BIG FISH to ERIN BROCKOVICH to TRAFFIC to THE BOURNE ULTIMATIUM, and I could go on.

The news comes from Baz Bamigboye, who has been all over Bond casting scoops, and he has details about the part that Finney will be playing.

He’s “a Foreign Office mandarin with powers over the Secret Intelligence Service, described to me as a reasonably big role and full of class. The part probably makes him M’s boss, though she — as played by Judi — might not see it that way.”

The film also stars Daniel Craig, Ralph Fiennes, Javier Bardem, Ben Whishaw and Naomie Harris. I really hope it isn’t called SKYFALL.

Finney rules!

If you haven't seen it, check out 'Under the Volcano'. John Huston movie from 1984. The most liquor-soaked character I can recall. Rivals Mickey Rourke in Barfly. Also check out Stephen Frears' 'Gumshoe'. Good shit.

while reading the extra tidbit I couldn't help but get a sense of Deja vu. LOL! I didn't know he left acting. I loved him in Big Fish, and all the other films you mentioned. Can't wait!

Skyfall sounds like the name of a Bond video game (IE: Bloodstone, Nightfire, etc.), but is okay with me. I'd like to see the title Warhead resurface, as it was an unproduced Bond movie from way back when.

Well IMHO Skyfall is a step up from Quantum of Solace. Quite frankly I don't care what they call it as long as it's good.

I like Skyfall. It's reminiscent of other Bond movies that used a similar naming convention, like Goldeneye or Thunderball.

Nice...

Finney was great in 'Before The Devil...', looking forward to this plenty.
And in all honesty, I quite like the title Skyfall. It has a certain towering quality to it, and wouldn't be the worst Bond title I've heard (cough View To A Kill cough)

Hmm...

I like Judi Dench, but I think it's weird how they completely rebooted the franchise yet kept her for Casino Royale. She didn't negatively affect the film in any way, but part of me always felt they should have just re-cast that role, because it was hard not to think of the Brosnan 007 films (for which she received a lot of attention, because when Goldeneye came out, a lot of Bond purists were outraged that a woman would be playing the role).

Sorry for the aside. I know it's not really

Sorry for the aside. I know it's not really related to Finney being cast. The description of his character just reminded me of all this.

Overlooking the tidbit,

Am I the only one who likes the name Skyfall? The problem is you can't have an overly unique name for a Bond film or else people will just call it "the James Bond movie".

Can I have 2 tickets for The Quantum...Solace of....Casino Royale 2....THE JAMES BOND MOVIE?!

A Foreign Office mandarin?

No matter, Albert Finney is a welcome addition to any movie in my book. Still think he deserved a Supporting Actor nomination for Big Fish.
