Alex Pettyfer to play half of a gay, interracial action hero couple for director Lee Daniels

Oct. 11, 2013by:

Lee Daniels has garnered a good deal of respect from the film industry for his Academy Award-nominated PRECIOUS and this year's THE BUTLER. His prior film, THE PAPERBOY, did not fare so well, but Daniels has proven that he has the chops for controversial material. His next project, if it gets made, may be his most controversial yet.

In an interview with Out Magazine, Daniels explained that Alex Pettyfer, who worked for the director on THE BUTLER, will play the lead in an action movie that Daniels is describing as a gay MR. & MRS. SMITH, but instead of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt playing the sexy spies, Pettyfer will be coupled in an interracial relationship with another man. Daniels also says the twist that the characters are gay will not be revealed until the end of the movie.

Daniels, who is openly gay, does not fear having trouble getting this movie made. With acceptance of homosexuality in the mainstream growing each year, it has yet to truly break into major studio fare as it has on television or in indie cinema. But, Daniels is confident.

I dont think Im going to have a problem now. I made a $100 million for THE BUTLER. Im in a rare group. So this is something I feel good about. His next step? I have to find the right black guy opposite him, Daniels says. Hopefully he finds a counterpart that he loves as much as Pettyfer, as he adds, Hes so hot, isnt he? So hot. And so aware of his hotness in a way thats soI love him to death.

I have no problem with an action movie being headlined by two gay characters. As long as the movie is good, who really cares? Daniels has not shown any true action sequences in his films to date, so for me it really hinges on that. If the movie is written, acted, and directed well, the gay twist doesn't really matter. In fact, to save that as a gotcha for the end of the movie seems like a cop-out. If you are going to make your characters gay, embrace it. It doesn't have to factor into the plot, but don't ignore it until the end.

Either way, if the film casts a big enough name opposite Alex Pettyfer, expect this to become a media darling as the movie goes into production.

Extra Tidbit: Too bad Alex Pettyfer is a shitty actor.

I Love You Phillip Morris sounds quite a bit like this and I loved that film.

On a side-note: Hes so hot, isnt he? So hot. And so aware of his hotness in a way thats soI love him to death.
Anyone else read that with Big Gay Al's voice in mind?

I'm a pretty open minded dude. Couldn't care less as to someone's sexuality, whether in reality or fiction.

But this sounds pretty re-goddamn-diculous.

What the fuck are you talking about? This is an incredibly poor written article. Where is anything said about the character's being gay be a twist ending? Where does it say anything about the film being like mr and mrs smith as opposed to a bourne or bond film? The quotes you used doesn't even say anything about it being an action movie. Perhaps Daniels explains it more in the interview, but you have to include that information, or else your article is useless and you should just provide a

You are supposed to be summarizing this [link] and giving us the news worthy parts, but instead you pretty much skipped that and went to the next step of offering your opinion on it
If this is indeed an action film, that is indeed like mr and mrs smith, but with two men, I think that's interesting, and I'm surprised it hasn't been done before. It'll be very interesting to see how the film walks the line of not being offensive by bad stereotypes of gay men but also still being a film that's accessible to everyone and is a mainstream film. That may be impossible, but it'll be cool that someone at least tried. Now if this is just going to be a regular action/spy film like bourne, bond, and MI, but the character happens to be gay, and it's mentioned in 3 or 4 scenes that he's gay calling his black significant other, than they might as well cast Paris Hilton too. I have no problems with the lead action character being gay, but to be the first thing that is talked about is really bringing more attention to the film like a stunt, when it shouldn't be big news either way if the action character is gay and calls his boyfriend 3 times, or his boyfriend gets kidnapped by the bad guys or something. That's not focused on a good story and is only wanting to be a stunt and as long as Daniels makes a big deal about an interracial gay action character, interracial couples, gay couples, and interracial gay couples will never be equal because you are treating it like it's some big deal, some taboo, which it isn't, and which I would think gay people would want to prevent. But then again, we really know absolutely nothing about this film because of how awful this article is.

Could care less about whether its gay or not, but it just sounds like a dumb idea. Could be completely wrong, of course. Guess we'll see.

It will be interesting to see how they sell this, who will pick it up, and how it will eventually do at the box office.

I really want Lee Daniels to get back to making that Miss Saigon movie though.

It has been tried before...
More than once...
Remember, after the success of My Best Friend's Wedding, Rupert Everett was supposed to star in a gay Bond like movie...
My point being Studios are afraid of the reaction from 'average' Americans to a gay hero...

I doubt this will get made anytime soon

Look at the fun Steven Soderbergh had trying to get a major studio to pick up BEHIND THE CANDELABRA, and that had two A-listers like Michael Douglas and Matt Damon in the lead roles.

I like the idea (except Lee already blew the twist ending!) but Hollywood is still to afraid of 'teh gay' to give this the A treatment.

THE AMBIGUOUSLY GAY DUO MOVIE IS FINALLY COMING TO FRUITION!

Because if that doesn't sound like the plot-line straight from SNL's old Saturday TV Funhouse shorts (minus the interracial love angle), I don't know what does.

I, for one, think it's a great concept. Lot's of dramatic tension there, to go with the "action". How bout the guy from chronicle as the other lead? Yeah, that sounds about right. And i disagree with the claim that this type of character setup is out of touch with today's mainstream and that studios "won't go there." This could be precisely the type of light-hearted, yet fun story that actually enables a larger audience to root for a gay romance. Maybe I'm dreaming...

Lee Daniels has a history of telling great stories and coaxing great performances out of his actors. He must see something in Pettyfer. Imagine the setup...this is going to invariably involve pre-conceived notions and stereotypes. Maybe one of them is stereotypically "gay" and the other stereotypically "straight." It's just fun to tinker with that formula. And then, the thug can't help but protect the whimpy little white guy lol.

Can it be a twist if you spoil it for everyone before you even make the film?

I want to know a movie like this can work. Action movies generally don't have much to do with sexuality. Sure, sometimes they are great big metaphors. And even in modern times, there aren't that many badass gay characters. I think it would be interesting to see how audiences will react to that.
