Alright, alright! Matthew McConaughey offered the lead in Christopher Nolan's Interstellar

Mar. 28, 2013by:

Christopher Nolan's INTERSTELLAR is moving quickly after announcing a release date late next year. With a script in place, the next step is to find a leading man and Nolan seems to be going with someone he has not worked with before. Deadline is reporting that an offer has been made to Matthew McConaughey for the starring role.

INTERSTELLAR's plot "involves time travel and alternate dimensions in a story that sees a group of explorers travel through a wormhole. The script is based on scientific theories developed by a Kip Thorne, a theoretical physicist, a gravitational physicist and astrophysicist at Caltech." While McConaughey has not worked in the science fiction genre often, he did play a role in another film based on theories from an influential scientist, Carl Sagan's CONTACT. McConaughey had been drowning in mediocre romantic comedies until this past year when he had a string of critical hits like KILLER JOE, BERNIE, and THE LINCOLN LAWYER as well as the box office success MAGIC MIKE. He is poised to continue his dramatic run with Martin Scorsese's THE WOLF OF WALL STREET and his physically transformative turn in DALLAS BUYER'S CLUB.

I am a Nolan fan and I trust his vision for INTERSTELLAR will be unique and visually breathtaking. McConaughey is an interesting choice for the lead, but it is one I can get behind. I hope he accepts and that we get some more casting news soon.

INTERSTELLAR is slated to open on November 7, 2014.

Extra Tidbit: I have no basis for including REIGN OF FIRE imagery with this story aside from it being a badass sci-fi role for McConaughey as well as featuring Christopher Nolan buddy Christian Bale.

I still think the academy's copy of Killer Joe got lost in the mail by Netflix. Mc deserved a statue nod for that one...

Good for him.

I hope he takes the part, and while I've never hated McConaughey, I've always felt like there was a better actor hiding somewhere underneath most his roles and I'm glad he's tapping in to it finally.

Well he must of seen something in his audition because I don't think anyone of us thought McConaughey would ever work with Nolan. But he did cast Heath Ledger as the Joker, and no one guessed that either.

Hope he takes this role. Love his dramatic flims. Contact has grown on me over the years, and Lincoln Lawyer along with Reign of Fire are top notch. I also really like that sports betting movie he did with Al Pacino, Two for the Money I believe is the correct title.

That's Great news..

If this happens, this will bring Mcconaughey back to the A-Lister status.. He has fallen of it for a few years, but still has been churning in top performances.

Alright, alright indeed...

Yep, Contact was the first that came to mind. And he was badass as Van Zant in Reign, which was awesome and had a young Christian Bale. Very hard to believe this was out almost 11 years ago...

Hell yeah

Unexpected, but good. It'll be interesting seeing him in such a high concept movie.

I never thought I'd be saying this, but this is great news!

In 2010, I absolutely hated McConaughey as an actor. He had a few decent roles here and there, but they were all very few, and very far apart. It got to the point where I'd deliberately avoid a film if I knew he had anything but a bit part... Then the Lincoln Lawyer happened, and after reading the novel and hearing the critical praise, I caved, and was impressed... My first thought was, "it's gotta be a fluke." After watching Bernie, unaware of his involvement, I was starting to give him the

Then the Lincoln Lawyer happened, and after reading the novel and hearing the critical praise, I caved, and was impressed... My first thought was, "it's gotta be a fluke." After watching Bernie, unaware of his involvement, I was starting to give him the benefit of the doubt. Killer Joe floored me. Not so much the film itself. It was a pretty decent flick, but I thought his performance was inspired. I never thought I'd be mad about him, of all people, being snubbed for an Oscar nom, but I really think he earned it for that one. I haven't seen Magic Mike, yet, but I imagine at some point I'll find the courage and comfort with my sexuality to finally rent it. With him joining Scorcesse's "Wolf", there's no doubt in my mind he's gotten serious about his career and is trying to change his image. Nolan has cast a few bad actors here and there, but always in minor roles. I think a lot of people are gonna be blown away with both his performance, and how quickly his reputation builds in Hollywood.

Side note... I thought Reign of Fire was pretty underrated. And kudos to McConaughey for the physical transformation... If he'd put a little more work into his performance, he'd have been on the A list a long, long time ago.

Wouldn't be my first pick, but I trust Nolan. Would have been so awesome for Nolan to team up with Guy Pearce again and give him a big starring role. The guy's awesome but still doesn't seem to be on the A-List where he belongs.

Pearce owned in Lockout and Lawless. Can't wait to see him kick more ass in Iron Man 3.

About 5 years ago, MM's career couldve really taken a nosedive. He's knocked it out of the park with his choices lately.

There's always a supporting role. I would like to see Jackman in this along with James Franco.

Would definitely be cool to see him take the lead in this. Would like to see him continue his run of making quality films.

Do it!

Teaming up with Nolan could really return him to the A-list. This could be his INCEPTION. He would be a fool to pass up the opportunity. He was headed towards VOD release territory just a couple of years ago. Remember SURFER DUDE?
