Producers say Peter Parker will be the only big screen Amazing Spider-man

May. 1, 2014by: Alex Maidy

Andrew Garfield and Marc Webb are going to be done with Peter Parker after third film in the franchise. After Tobey Maguire left Sam Raimi's trilogy, the entire franchise was rebooted, but Sony is expanding their series with spin-offs including THE SINISTER SIX and VENOM, which means another reboot in out of the question. Garfield recently suggested that Ultimate Spider-man character Miles Morales could be introduced to the big screen films to take over for Peter Parker which was met with a lot of disdain from fans of the webslinger.

Now we know for certain that Morales or any other Spider-man variant will not be introduced in THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN cinematic universe. Speaking with IndieWire about THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 and beyond, producers Avi Arad and Ben Tolmach gave a definitive no to seeing anyone but Peter Parker as Spider-man. Arad further explained why.

No. The one thing you cannot do, when you have a phenomena that has stood the test of time, you have to be true to the real character inside who is Peter Parker? What are the biggest effects on his life? Then you can draw in time, and you can consider today's world in many ways. But to have multiple ones I don't know if you remember, but Marvel tried it. And it was almost the end of Spider-Man.

Tolmach went on to say if they are ever replaced as the decision-makers on the franchise, that could change, but for now they emphatically say Peter Parker is Spider-man. They also go on to say the spin-offs will converge with the main franchise at some point which to me sounds like some sort of AVENGERS-style mega-movie. How that would work out remains to be seen. But, for now, Peter Parker fans can rest easy.

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 opens tomorrow, May 2nd.

There are so many other characters they could put on film instead...

Of redoing one of the most popular comic characters. I've been a fan of comics since I was a kid in the 80's and until this article I didn't know who the hell Miles Morales was, as is with probably most of America.

This is the one occasion I think another reboot would be a great thing. Reboot this shit before they even get the 3rd Amazing Spiderman out. No matter how awful it would be it would still be an improvement and only help us to completely forget how atrocious the Amazing Spiderman franchise and Andrew Garfield is.

Just recast Spider Man with another actor and go forward with the established storylines from the previous films Webb and Garfield made.

No need to reboot (again). Or in a perfect world the rights would go back to Marvel. Imagine the possibilities of Spider Man if Marvel were to use them in their Avenger Universe.

Miles sucks

Just my opinion. His entry into the Spidey world, the way Pete died, whole thing just...sucks...like Damian Wayne suck. Sure comic writers experiment with new ideas because shit gets stale, brains get fogey, writers get bored but there is too much out there already to necessitate changing Spider-man. Different actors can play him just like different artists drew him...we read it for story...the art was just the visual delivery system. Frankly, I'd get a kick if they tried to do the Clone

It hasn't been done yet on screen (No multiple Supermen, no Knightfall, etc....). An usurper story line (shit maybe even Kraven) is one thing I'd like a Marvel or Dc property attempt. If anything to add another course to the meal.

I wouldn't care if there was another reboot or why even call it that? Why can't another director express interest if offering another take on Spiderman? It's not resetting the franchise, it's just a different vision. Why does there just have to be this one continuity, you know? Would the public really be that confused?

The article says there is NO chance of a reboot. Fanboys can quit whining about spidey origins 3.0 in 5 years. As for introducing a different spider that would do nothing but piss people off. Let's face it the comic community isn't all that large, as much as they think they are, and to introduce Miles as Spidey would cause a resounding WTF in 99 out of a 100 people. My concern is them recasting Parker after AM3, since it sounds like Spidey would have to be in a Sinister Six flick or any of

I'm not seeing another reboot...

And hopefully neither will the majority of people. Don't even try.

Hmmm Avi Arad saying a bunch of random stuff that he'll just go back on later if it's profitable, so glad he isn't charge of Marvel's film division anymore.

I think they're getting way ahead of themselves. But this is typical producer thinking: never EVER change something that's making you money...until it stops making you money, in which case ignore all advice and fuck with the property your own way because you know better than everyone.

It's a "franchise" with a "continuing storyline"... But every film will reach its own full resolution with no major plot threads unresolved in order to mitigate risk. After all, Empire Strikes Back was the least successful Star Wars movie \s

Listen...

I fucking love SpiderMan. I've seen the new one and it was enjoyable. However, no matter which way you slice it, it is not the representation that us fans can be satisfied with. First off, just because someone wrote a great love story (500 Days of Summer) doesn't mean we want a great love story for Spiderman. Sure its a great element, but come on. We need a writer that wants to dive way deeper into Peter Parker. Im talking more time being a dork, more relationships of conflict at school and a more realized relationship with Harry Osborne, like in Raimis trilogy. Secondly, there has got to be a more reverent way of doing Spideys villains. THERE THE BEST VILLAINS IN THE MARVEL UNIVERSE. Electro was a waste in the new one. My thoughts are so disorganized and my writing sucks but I needed to vent. thank you.

Sooooooo...another reboot? Sony'll be goddamned before they give this back to Marvel so Spidey movies will always be on their docket. I say they sell it back to Marvel for a cool billion and call it a day.
Or, bring back Tobey Maguire and adapt the storylines of Peter Parker in his 30's as a high school teacher. Make the Webb movies a distant memory please.

That's why I think they'd have to have a larger-than-necessary pricetag because they know if Marvel got hold of the property it would be HUGE money. Marvel would do better than Sony, even if it was Spidey showing up like Nick Fury did at the end of Iron Man and they'd have a money printing machine. I get the feeling that Sony doesn't want to make acceptable Spidey movies anymore, they just don't want Marvel to have it back.

Sony reps have recently made one concession on this topic. They've said they'll consider selling back the film rights when the heat death of the universe happens. :P
