Amazon and Netflix have both passed on season four of Hannibal

07.06.2015

After the cancellation of Hannibal many of us refused to believe that the show was truly dead, surely Amazon or Netflix would save Hannibal for us, but unfortunately the show will have to find another method of resurrection as Hannibal creator Bryan Fuller has stated on Twitter that both Amazon and Netflix have passed on the opportunity to bring the show back for a fourth season.

As Hannibal has a streaming deal with Amazon, I was hopeful that if anyone could take the show in it would be them, but it seems like they won't be playing savior this time around. It's heartening to know that Bryan Fuller is still looking into other possibilities to revive the show, but the likelihood of that happening seems rather bleak at the moment. Another stumbling block to the show's return is that the contracts of both Hugh Dancy and Mads Mikkelsen have expired, although both actors have stated that they love the show and would return to their roles should a season four pickup occur.

In addition to the cast departing, Bryan Fuller himself already has a new project on the go; he will be developing and writing the new Starz series American Gods alongside Michael Green (Kings). The new series, which is based on the Neil Gaiman novel of the same name, has been given a straight-to-series order but doesn't have a release date at the moment.

Can anyone else step up to the plate and save Hannibal? The Food Network perhaps?

Staying Positive

I'm making this green not because I'm happy about this but because I'm staying positive. This news isn't A) surprising or B) that big of a deal, actually. Despite most peoples' assumptions, Amazon and Netflix were always two of the longest shots for picking this show up. Even though Amazon owns the exclusive streaming rights to the first three seasons, they're 100% committed to producing original work; they're not in the business of "saving" existing shows. And Netflix was never going to pick
And Netflix was never going to pick up a show that they didn't own the streaming rights for three previous seasons of. Now everybody is looking to other streaming services like Yahoo or Hulu, but Hannibal's best chance of survival is actually on a real network. Not only because Yahoo and Hulu would have the same problem as Netflix (not being able to provide their viewers with the pre-existing seasons of the show), but because many of Gaumont's (the studio that produces the show) existing deals with foreign distributors are predicated on the fact that Hannibal's American distributor is an actual television network. (All these foreign distributors want the perceived prestige that comes along with a real live-on-TV network; they don't give a sh*t about Netflix, which people in most foreign countries can't watch anyway.) If Gaumont went with Yahoo or Hulu, they'd lose many of their contracts with foreign distributors. Hannibal's best chance, I think, is on either A&E (where it would be a good fit with Bates Motel and their upcoming Damien) or Sundance Channel (where it would be a good fit with prestigious dramas like Rectify and Top Of The Lake). Ratings aren't as important to either of those networks as they are to NBC, so it could conceivably continue for several seasons with its current numbers.
Long story short, the "news" that Amazon and Netflix have officially passed on Hannibal is barely meaningful to the show's survival chances and none of us should be despairing quite yet.

Insightful. I too think A&E would be a good fit for it. Let's see how things play out

Worst news... maybe Netflix has committed to other shows, whatever excuse it is, Hannibal needs to come back somewhere.

i think also Netflix didnt want to commit because Amazon would still hold onto the rights to the other seasons which left them in an odd position. damn you Amazon!

That's really disappointing. Perhaps whoever the hell picked up Community for another season could do the same for Hannibal.

This is hard to believe

I doubt Netflix had no interest in picking this up for another season. They have funded how many projects on their service? Besides the amazing original shows, how is it that things like Hemlock Grove, The Mindy Project, Supernatural, and a dozen other inferior shows get renewed or saved by other networks but not Hannibal? This better be some secret that Fuller is waiting to unveil at Comic Con this weekend.
