Amazon Studios to release Nicolas Winding Refn's The Neon Demon Summer 2016

While readers of this website are certainly familiar with the films of director Nicolas Winding Refn, the indie filmmaker's movies are not exactly multiplex material. That being said, Refn's latest film is going to get some major exposure to the streaming community thanks to a release deal with Amazon Studios. Refn's THE NEON DEMON will get a theatrical release next summer followed by a debut on Amazon Prime. This means the millions of people who have free shipping will now get their hands on a cannibal horror movie set in the fashion industry.

Starring Elle Fanning, Bella Heathcote, Christina Hendricks, Jena Malone, and Keanu Reeves, THE NEON DEMON will certainly appeal to fans of DRIVE, ONLY GOD FORGIVES, PUSHER, and the other films on Refn's resume.

THE NEON DEMON centers on an aspiring model who moves to Los Angeles where her youth and vitality are devoured by a group of beauty-obsessed women who will go to any lengths to get what she has.

The new image seen above of Elle Fanning further illustrates the balance between horror and beauty that Refn has embodied in each of his films. THE NEON DEMON is also notable for being yet another unique acquisition by Amazon who are set to release Spike Lee's CHI-RAQ later this year. After Netflix made waves with their slate of original releases starting with Cary Fukunaga's BEASTS OF NO NATION, Amazon did not waste any time in nipping at their heels. So far, none of the films from either company are on par with a big budget studio release but it can only be a matter of time before they make that leap.

THE NEON DEMON hits theaters (and Amazon Prime) in Summer 2016.
