AMC confirms they are developing a Preacher series with Seth Rogen

1 year agoby:

Dreams can come true, everyone! After years of false starts on both an HBO series and a big screen adaptation, the amazing comic series PREACHER is finally becoming a reality. Rumors surfaced that AMC was developing a PREACHER series with Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg and we finally have confirmation that the network home to THE WALKING DEAD, MAD MEN, and BREAKING BAD will create the series.

For those of you unfamiliar with PREACHER, shame on you. But, here is a nice rundown about the plot.

Preacher follows Reverend Jesse Custer, a tough Texas preacher who has lost his faith, has learned that God has left Heaven and abandoned His responsibilities. He finds himself the only person capable of tracking God down, demanding answers, and making Him answer for His dereliction of duty. Accompanying Jesse on his journey is his former girlfriend and a friendly vampire who seems to prefer a pint in the pub to the blood of the innocent. On his tail is an immortal, unstoppable killing machine named the Saint of Killers – a western lone gunman archetype whose sole purpose is to hunt and kill Jesse.

At one point, Kevin Smith was attached to adapt PREACHER as was Sam Mendes. Many thought the film would never happen but now we know it will be brought to us with the resources AMC has to offer. Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg have really been wanting to make this happen and with their success with THIS IS THE END, they can now realize it. The two had this to offer from the announcement.

“We’ve tried for seven years to work on Preacher and we’re so psyched AMC is finally letting us,” the two said. “It is our favorite comic of all time, and we’re going to do everything we can to do it right. Humperdoo!”

Creator Garth Ennis also issued a statement about the PREACHER series coming to AMC.

“Steve Dillon and I are very happy to see Preacher being developed for TV, which seems a much more natural home for the story than a 2-hour movie,” Ennis said. “Obviously it’s taken a while, but Ken Levin along with Neal Moritz and his team refused to give up, long after the point when I myself grew skeptical, and their unrelenting enthusiasm for the project has gotten us where we need to be. I’m particularly impressed that Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg and Sam Catlin understand Preacher fully — meaning they get it for what it is, not some vague approximation,”

Love or hate Rogen, the guy is not going to half-ass this. Sure, THE GREEN HORNET may have been a bit misguided, but Rogen tried to make something unique with that. Hopefully the reverence he has for the material lives up to our expectations. I just can't wait to see Arseface!

Sounds good

Just as long as AMC doesn't cut the budget in half and boot the show runners after the first season that is.

James Franco for Jesse Custer!

As much as I would have loved this landing on HBO, this seems like a solid compromise to me. Rogen & Goldberg are fellow super fans so my faith they'll do it justice is pretty high right now. "This Is The End" dabbled in religion, violence, blasphemy and sodomy and made a pretty penny in the process, so I think the audience is ready and willing to go to the deep dark places Preacher will take them.

Im cautiously optimistic

I absolutely love this series. I just don't think AMC will be able to deliver the brutality the comic portrays sometime. I would've been more excited if it was an HBO series.

My Favorite Story Ever

I have faith in Rogen and Goldberg. Preacher is my favorite comic series ever. Pure Genius. I just wish it was on HBO. There is some hardcore stuff that'll probably be cut out. I hope they keep it set in the 90's. I don't wanna see Arseface blow his head off because Amy Winehouse died or some shit.

P.S. FUCK COMMUNISM!!!

I got no problem with Rogen throwing money at this, I just hope he doesn't decide to star in it.

Hmmmm....

Anyone who has read the comics knows that it's extremely violent and I honestly can't see AMC sticking too closely. Christ they wouldn't even let F-shots go on Breaking Bad until it released for home. This would be better suited as a trilogy of films in my opinion.

Unfortunately there's not much of a market for expensive and controversial R-rated films right now. Tv is our best shot, pity it didn't get greenlit by HBO or showtime though since they have less restrictions.

You know what, I went to see Green Hornet totally convinced that I will be disappointed but it was surprisingly entertaining. I suppose Christoph Waltz pretty much saved the whole movie, but Rogen's enthusiasm really shows.

I'll reserve judgment for now...

But the Green Hornet is not a good starter for saying you're going to be faithful to a comic book series.

So will we finally get a basic cable that let's a show drop the f-bomb? It's not Preacher without it. Is his lighter going to say "Screw Communism"? I think this show could stir up lots of trouble for everyone especially based on it's treatment of the divine in the face of human empowerment.

I don't know how much it needs to be used to please Preacher fans, but I do know Breaking Bad employed the word now and again.

Not sure here...

I've read the prequel that tells the origins of the various characters and the first part, and I don't see this being able to work on anything other than HBO/Showtime and/or Netflix...

I am keeping an open mind though...

I think Seth Rogan and Evan Goldberg will do a great job with this. AMC has already proven they don't hold anything back when it comes to blood and gore. I'm concerned AMC will pull the same sort of shenanigans they did with Frank Darabont and Walking Dead, but even that show turned out all right despite everything that went down.

Sounds good so far. I'm a bit weary of it being made by AMC but what can ya do?

Preacher was in my top 5 favorite comic books ever when I was in my teens. I had literally every issue.
Now I don't give a fuck. I know AMC will puss out on showing some of the more offensive stuff. HBO on the other hand............

I remember that for a long time Shia LaBeouf was rumoured to be playing Arseface.

And the joke was he wouldn't need the makeup.

Not to knock Seth Rogen, but I hope he stays behind the camera for this one. I mean, I think he can do a great job on this show driving the creative direction for the show. I just can't see him fitting into any of these characters.
Overall, super excited to see this coming to life finally.

Josh Brolin for Jesse, imo. Actually, hopefully they'll cast an unknown. But Brolin could have rocked it in a film version.

AMC Will (Most Likely) Screw This Up

"... now we know it will be brought to us with the resources AMC has to offer." I laughed when I read that as a show like this will need a larger budget than AMC will ever be comfortable giving it. These penny pinching AMC execs will water the extremely dense material down to its complete basic elements. It will most likely become a road show with a love triangle at its center. But, to be positive, it's an adaptation of PREACHER. So, there's that.
