AMC theaters to show A Wrinkle in Time for free to underprivileged children

Today's feel good story is brought to you by AMC Theaters, and their effort to bring Ava DuVernay's A WRINKLE IN TIME to underprivileged kids … for free!

That's right, folks. There's been a bit of goodwill going on in the film community as of late, with events such as the crowd-funded #BlackPantherChallenge becoming a huge success. If the #BlackPantherChallenge managed to escape your radar, the movement amassed thousands of dollars for kids to enjoy seeing Disney and Marvel's latest superhero adventure in theaters for free. The event itself became a viral sensation thanks in-part to the help of social media, standing as a testament to how a community can sometimes come together to create something truly inspiring.

Now, AMC Theaters and Color of Change are joining forces for the Give A Child The Universe initiative which will welcome underprivileged children the theater for a change to see some honest-to-goodness Disney movie magic.

Beginning today, Give A Child The Universe is encouraging both individual and group benefactors to purchase and donate tickets to the movie, which will welcome the little ones to enjoy a matinee screening of the upcoming fantasy film. Color of Change will then distribute the tickets by way of a network of local partners, schools and community-based establishments, giving kids the chance to see the film without the financial stress of affording their own ticket.

“Color of Change believes in the power of images and supports those working to change the rules in Hollywood so that inclusive, empathetic and human portrayals of Black people and people of color are prominent on the screen,” declared Rashad Robinson, executive director of Color Of Change in statement. “From Selma to now A Wrinkle In Time, Ava DuVernay has set out to change the rules in Hollywood for people of color and women. By casting a black teenage actress Storm Reid as the heroine at the center of this story, the filmmakers and the studio send a powerful message to millions of young people who will see someone like them embracing their individuality and strength to save the world. We are pleased to partner with AMC to ensure that as many young people as possible, regardless of economic and financial hardships, can see this groundbreaking film.”

A WRINKLE IN TIME tells the story of how after the disappearance of her scientist father, three peculiar beings send Meg, her brother, and her friend to space in order to find him. The film stars Oprah Winfrey, Mindy Kaling, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Chris Pine, Reese Witherspoon, Michael Pena, Storm Reed, and Zach Galifinakis. SELMA director Ava DuVernay will helm the fantasy action film from a screenplay written by Jennifer Lee.

“The Wrinkle in Time story is one that children from all backgrounds and walks of life can identify with and draw inspiration from, and we are thrilled to celebrate this film in a meaningful way, through the vision of Ava DuVernay and in partnership with Color of Change,” said Nikkole Denson-Randolph, vice president, special content, AMC.

A WRINKLE IN TIME will arrive in theaters on March 9th.
