America loves Melissa McCarthy according to Redbox's top ten most rented films of 2013

Dec. 27, 2013by: Jesse Giroux

My friends and I love to joke about Redbox. Not that there's anything wrong with the company, but it's obvious that the people who usually rent from them don't have the best taste in movies. Sometimes when I'm in a Walmart I'll take a look to see which movie someone is checking out, and nine times out of ten, it's either a shitty Adam Sandler film or a generic, straight to DVD action flick starring John Cena.

Redbox has released their list of most rented films of 2013, and one thing we can take away from it is that people really love Melissa McCarthy. Her comedy IDENTITY THIEF is this year's top rental, and THE HEAT is right behind it in the number 2 slot. Apparently people didn't mind seeing D.C. being attacked twice, since both OLYMPUS HAS FALLEN and WHITE HOUSE DOWN made the list as well. And surprising no one, GROWN UPS 2 and HERE COMES THE BOOM were also in the top 10, but let's not talk about that. It'll just make me incredibly cynical.

Redbox's 10 Most Rented Films Of 2013

1. Identity Thief
2. The Heat
3. World War Z
4. Flight
5. Olympus Has Fallen
6. Django Unchained
7. Grown Ups 2
8. White House Down
9. Here Comes the Boom
10. Now You See Me

Extra Tidbit: Redbox should probably just change its name to "The House That Sandler Built" at this point.

We watched Identity Theft on Now TV (UK) a few days ago and we hated it. How the hell do you find a character funny when you hate them so much. Was a shame to see Bateman stuck in here.

It's because people don't want to actually pay good money for these "rentals".

If it's a dollar, sure. But screw that if it's like, three bucks or more.

Fitting

I can understand why two movies with a loudly annoying fat lady with jokes flat as a potatoe chip appeal to people who won't get their butts up for cinema and like to stay on their couches with rental movies.
Its not a clichee if facts support the conclusion. ;-)

i think

thats what people use Redbox for, is to rent crappy movies at a cheap price. Thats what me and my gf use it for, whenever we see a trailer of movie that neither one of us wants to pay to see, well usually jus say "well redbox it". So i dont think only people with bad taste use it, i think people who dont want to pay theater price or dvd price to see a crappy movie, but still kinda wanna see it on a Tuesday night for a 1.50 use Redbox.

McCarthy is becoming almost as annoying as Sandler and Ferrell.

It doesn't help that the "big-ticket" movies allways get rented out by the lucky few, so most people end up renting these "middle- tier" flicks instead.

What's with the thumbs down? I am generally curious. I don't remember much about when this movie came out but didn't it bomb? Plus, I thought the general interest in Kevin James was gone.

Identity Thief wasn't that funny. And I never saw The Heat. Glad to see some really good films in that list like Django Unchained and Flight.

I also think McCarthy's shtick is getting old as well.

What happens with Redbox is that most-rented films are probably those that audiences kinda wanted to see but decided to give a miss at the theatre, hence the overall quality of that top ten list which, barring Flight and Django Unchained, ranges from 'ehh, it's alright' to 'horrible'. I would've thought that big-ticket blockbusters like Iron Man 3, Man of Steel, Star Trek Into Darkness and Pacific Rim would top the list, but I guess those who wanted to see that probably either saw the films in
