American Sniper will no longer be directed by Steven Spielberg

Aug. 5, 2013by:

After indefinitely postponing ROBOPOCALYPSE, Steven Spielberg announced that his next film would be AMERICAN SNIPER, based on the book by Chris Kyle. Bradley Cooper was even set to star and produce the movie. But, news came down today that Spielberg has dropped out of directing the movie and is taking Dreamworks with him.

Deadline says that a studio completely dropping out of a project like this is unorthodox as they would usually seek another filmmaker to replace the departed director. But, Steven Spielberg is not your average director. His close ties to Dreamworks uniquely link him to both sides of the project.

Bradley Cooper can still keep the project alive by taking the package featuring him as producer and star to another studio and get the film made. Warner Bros. can now do what they will with the project. The question now is what the heck will Spielberg's next film be? Does the director have another project we don't know about or is he just becoming pickier in his old age?

Extra Tidbit: Is Spielberg lining up INDY 5? STAR WARS 8? HOOK 2?

My interest in this movie just went to 0 - I was looking forward to seeing Spielberg take on a war movie again

This actually makes me happy. The guy needs to get back to sci-fi and possibly wash the bad taste from my mouth when it comes to fixing Indiana Jones.

It didn't seem like a film that would be directed by Spielberg, more like one that would be produced by him at the most.

Glad he dropped both of these films.

Hopefully he picks a project where he can showcase what he does best: awe & wonder/terror/ magic/ and adventure.

I want to see more movies from him in the vein of his classics: "Jaws", "Close Encounters", "E.T.", the Indiana Jones movies, and "Jurassic Park".

Like KyleG, I am not interested in the American Sniper movie for now. We moviefans shall see if and when Spielberg is replaced by whom. Fictional war movies can have whomever they want. They can afford to be just entertainment such as a G.I. Joe movie or Battleship. Historical war movies deserve talented directors able to navigate delicate subject matter and respectfully do material justice. Maybe, the American Sniper project will get someone like that.

I was looking forward to Spielberg's American Sniper. I watched the interview with Chris Kyle and he sounds like a really interesting fellow.

That's too bad. I didn't know about Robopocalypse falling out either. Disappointed. Was looking forward to both films. Hopefully they still get made.

he always says he's gonna make a movie, then ends up putting it on the back burner. look at lincoln, took forever to get around to directing and all that jazz. most of the time though he makes the movies he says he's gonna.

Disappointed to see him leave the film. I would have loved to have seen what he would have done with this and it's story.

I really hope another good quality comes onboard, because this is a great story worth being told. And I have a feeling that Cooper would deliver a great performance.

Go, Stevie!

He's ready for a big, huge blockbuster. Like, the biggest of his career. No, I'm only half serious. He probably won't do another Indy right away. Hook 2? You're not serious, right? I don't even think he'd direct another Jurassic Park, even though he knows hows BADLY we want him to. He's just getting picky. But he needs to step in and send JJ packing and give us a REAL Star Wars sequel.

And people forget the Spielberg, Katzenberg, and Geffen connections to Dreamworks SKG. They're

And people forget the Spielberg, Katzenberg, and Geffen connections to Dreamworks SKG. They're some of the greats in movies, tv, and music, ya know. Dreamworks deserves a little more credit, especially their animation wing, which is headed by the guy who was in charge of the early 90s disney musicals.
