Amy Adams is Janis Joplin? That's generous

07.16.2010

No one tell 30 Rock's Jenna Malone, the Janis Joplin biopic is real, and has just found its leading lady.

Producer Wyck Godfrey was talking Twilight with Fearnet, and casually let it slip that Amy Adams would be playing Janis Joplin in Fernando Meirelles’ (CITY OF GOD) biopic of the singer. Deadline confirms the casting info, and notes that many have tried and failed to get a Janis Joplin biopic made, and it’s still early to tell that despite a solid director and star, if this one will actually pull through.

And as for the uh, physical similarities between the actress and the legend? I think we can all safely say, “what physical similarities?” Adams can sing (but sing like Joplin?), but certainly doesn’t look the part as of yet. Presumably they’d have to do some sort of Charlize Theron MONSTER makeover on her, and if this gets made and is a success, I would predict a possible Oscar for the young actress at last as they really do love that kind of shit.

No one has a bigger crush on Adams than me, and I think she’s got talent, but this would likely be a role that would push her to her limit, as it would seem to be way outside her comfort zone.

What do you guys make of this?

Extra Tidbit: Eh just put Joplin's trademark gynormous tinted glasses on her and no one will be able to tell the difference.

I thought Zooey Deschanel was going to play her in a movie. I read reports a long time ago confirming this or at least saying she wanted to.

my pick

Somebody should give the singer Sia a screentest. She at least looks like a regular person instead of a movie star.

LET SHANNON DUNK

There's a reason why everyone loves Amy Adams. She's good. This part sounds like a stretch, but if she can pull it off, she deserves everything that comes her way.

Soul???

As a soul singer who suffered from addiction and the gluttonous void that appears as passion like Janis. This is the wrong choice. Janis and the people I know well that knew her are outraged. Amy Adams is a remarkable actress, but this part is more fit for a relentless rebel with nothing left but unreasonable hope, not to mention a power greater than themselves so deep within them that it can only be vocalized through music. Why cast anyone other than that. And dont give me that bullshit line

But for God’s sake dont just cast it with today’s current sweatheart leading lady and hope for the best, not for Janis. This has to be re-thought, NOW!!! Sorry Amy it’s not personal loved you in “Junebug” your great but you cant sing like Janis and there are many out there who can, so why get greedy. You could play Grace Kelley or maybe Joni Michelle. She was friends with Janis. —Anonymous.

Guys, give her a shot. I will criticize her as much as anyone if her performance isn't good but history is full of actors and actresses who amazed by showing a side of themselves no one knew about before.

Besides, I'm not sure I know any actress who fits your description. Most of them are asked to be adorable on screen and off of it and when they're not, they become tabloids fodder and completely lose their credibility.

Amy Adams has a "cute" image because she's been asked to have one. It's

Amy Adams has a "cute" image because she's been asked to have one. It's the first time she has to break out of that image and, personnally, I'm curious to see what she has to offer!

I think Amy is a great actress, and she can pull off almost any role. I'm all for this. But why is she and Zooey listed as playing Janis on the IMDb page?

Take the makeup off Adams and some of those nice little pills and you almost got Joplin. But she doesn't really have to look like her that much. Anybody remember I'm Not There? Like six ppl playing Dylan. All completely different.

Like JimmyArrow said, they are not that dissimilar in appearance. The question is whether Adams has the range to pull off the drugged up rock star. I say give her the benefit of the doubt. Joplin also could be cute and girlish at times if you listen to her live performances. The only thing we would really need to see from Adams that we have not got so far is that earthiness and raw sexuality that Joplin exuded. I say give her a chance.

yikes - I think that's terrible, personally. Sure Amy Adams is cute and entertaining but where has she shown enough inner rock and roll to be believable? Who cares how much or how little she looks like Janis Joplin. Junebug is her most dramatic role I've seen of hers and even in that she couldn't help but come across as cute.

They're not THAT different...

Biopics actors are almost always prettier than who they're potraying. The biggest difference there is between the two pictures is that Amy Adams has make-up like an actress doing a photoshoot and Janis doesn't have any. Without makeup and with Janis' clothes, Adams will still be prettier but not so far that you don't know who she's playing!

I can definitely see where they would figure her for the role. She's not the perfect choice (that person, I don't believe exists). I could point out the dissimilarity of Philip Seymour Hoffman to Truman Capote, but that worked wonderfully. Let's all pray she can do something to evoke the great '60s icon in our minds.

Oscar gold, bitches. Oscar gold. Then we'll get the critics saying "She barely looks like Joplin" while she'll say "It's not supposed to look like her, it's just an interpretation," then the fans will applaud her reasoning, and Adams goes home with a gold dude! Huzzah!

But seriously, music biopics usually suck, so I'll remain cautious.

Just watch Monster with C. Theron. It is very possible to make attractive women unattractive.

They should use . . .

...that girl from Ohio who came in 2nd on American Idol. Crystal something or other . . . She kind of has the look and definitely has the pipes. There's no way they can get Adams looking like Janis.

I'd rather see Zooey, but it doesn't matter as long as it gets made. Janis would be one of the more interesting biopics.

I really can't see her doing Joplin. But, I have seen good transformations before. Dakota Fanning pulled off Cherie Currie, so who knows. But I agree, they would have to pull off a major makeover to make it work.

uh...

What happened to the Janis Joplin biopic that was supposed to be shot a couple of years ago with Zooey Deschanel? According to IMDB, it's still in pre-production...

But seriously, I'd choose Amy Ryan over Adams to play Janis...
