An Imax poster for John Carter and a goofy marketing campaign

02.01.2012

I don't mean to be down on JOHN CARTER, but it's hard not to feel like this film is going to bomb, hard. The marketing department doesn't seem to know what they have, which is why they're releasing bizarre posters like this Imax one (which just debuted on Fandango), that don't exactly do anything to sell the film to anyone who hasn't read the books. Not that the footage has been convincing that they have anything to sell in the first place, of course.

Disney has also announced a silly campaign to find the real John Carter. That's right, if your real name is John Carter (or some variation thereof) you can win a trip to... Peru? Because it's just like Mars...? Any eligable entrant will be invited to a special advanced screening of the film just for those John Carters out there.

...

They really have no idea what to do with this, do they?

JOHN CARTER opens next month.

Bah! It annoys me to no end that the marketing campaign is going to kill this film. The books are hugely enjoyable, and as far as I can tell the film is going to be a pretty decent adaptation and lots of fun. The marketing, however, makes it look like a dull, flavor-less, science-fiction version of Prince of Persia.

Exactly....

They honestly have no idea what they have. What surprises me is how involved Andrew Stanton is, and yet, is letting this kind of crap, including the weird John Carter contest, happen. The movie, I think, will be epic but that is only b/c I trust Stanton and Pixar...but thus far, they have messed up everything in the marketing of it. The poster is a mess. The logo is boring and they are just missing the point. If you've read the article about Stanton being a huge fan, it's great to hear about

Maybe it's bad that he is too close to the material....I don't know. Slightly worried.

movie might be cool

but still looks forgettable and like a random mix of about eight other things we've seen recently.

still though, about the poster... it pretty bad, I mean... I can guarantee you that that poster will make people think it's an animated movie

I remember I was unimpressed with the marketing for Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl (a movie based on the ride?), but loved it when I saw it. I think a quality blockbuster will do good at the box office despite lackluster marketing. Only if the film is good.

If He's Shirtless, They Will Come

Every preview I've seen with my sister so far has her squealing, "Tim Riggins!!!!" So they at least will get the Friday Night Lights crowd, and not just the chicks, cuz inside, I'm squealing the same thing.

Trailers and posters mean nothing. It doesn't mean the movie is good or bad. Maybe it's great. Most of my favourite movies don't advertise well. And often times they don't even do good business. (Probably because of marketing) That's why I'll watch the movie and judge for myself. I rarely watch trailers anymore and posters are just a way of saying the movie is coming out. Most posters suck anyway. The average viewer (all of us) should stop worrying if it's going to bomb or not. That should have

If the trailer and poster sucked does that mean you won't/can't enjoy the movie?

Yeah, shitty poster, but I am very excited to see this. Looks like a fun time.
