An update and title for Ridley Scott's Alien prequel reboot thing?

12.09.2010

UPDATES: Fox twitterer Chris Petrikin tweets that the project is only one movie and isn't called PARADISE (but doesn't say it's not a working title or codename), and says there will be "answers soon." This appears to be a legit Fox twitter account, and not the hilarious (and accurate) fake one that unfortunately got pulled a while back. Meanwhile, The Playlist claims that any casting rumors are "just plain wrong." Stay tuned for further rumors to make their way around and then be refuted.

December 8, 2010: There have been varying rumors recently that Ridley Scott's ALIEN prequel(s) was either gearing up or getting delayed, but let's face it, the project has been the subject of considerable speculation since it was announced over a year ago.

Now Vulture is claiming the movie has a title: PARADISE. I don't know if that's meant to be a codename or if it's actually ALIEN: PARADISE, but whatever the case, that name will probably change before release. The plan is reportedly still to shoot two movies back-to-back starting in 2011.

As we've heard, the movie would somehow involve the "Space Jockey" seen mummified in the 1979 original, or at least other members of his alien race. Well, that was the plan before "Lost" guy Damon Lindelof put his spin on the script -- now Vulture says that Scott's movie "reboots the original ALIEN franchise, in that the story follows a group of space travelers who encounter a monstrous alien creature that picks them off, one by one."

Noomi Rapace (THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO, et al.) is apparently still the leading contender for our new heroine (although Olivia Wilde's name has been in the mix), but Vulture says the production is also looking for someone to play David, "an android, an earlier version of the Bishop 341-B character that Lance Henriksen famously played in ALIENS." They wanted INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS' Michael Fassbender for the role, but that deal may not happen.

They are, however, after after Michelle Yeoh, who previously ventured through the void in SUNSHINE. She'd play Vickers, a tough-but-sexy gal. And the movie will feature a Gollum-style CGI character called Engineer 1 (a Space Jockey?) to be performance-captured by a large actor.

Oh, and the vicious Giger-designed xenomorph will be making an appearance. Let's hope...

Extra Tidbit: I love the (first two) ALIEN movies too much to get very excited about all this, but I'm hoping something changes that along the way. You?

Starting to wear off...

I was excited for a while, but this production sounds like an absolute mess with zero communication happening between the studio and filmmakers. Considering this is FOX, this is probably a good thing though.

This seems like a repeat of what happened to Robin Hood. It started out as a fucking cool idea (Nottingham) and was eventually whittled into a mediocre movie. Does Ridley Scott have any pull at all? Does he read the scripts?

Damn...missed opportunities, missed opportunities!

Whatever happened to a dialogue-less film about a COMPLETELY and UTTERLY *ALIEN* race (or group of aliens FROM another race) discovering (or biologically engineering) what we now call the Xenomorphs, only to be wiped out aboard their ship, later discovered by the crew of the first film?!?

Let's hope that with TWO films in the works, something might still be salvageable from that original brainchild.

I have faith in you, Mr. Scott...

Good Idea

I get why people are worried but think about it. If you get on an alien ship and see the jockey would you not say "Look at the big dude driving this thing!" They kind of already know what it is. Motion Capture is just the way they will explain the character the humans already know about.

We'll see, ALIENS is so good that you don't really need any ALIEN movies before or after it. Post LOST ending I'm iffy on anything with Lindeloff's name on it.

Sounds like they're trying to use the exact same characters from the past movies. Rapace will play a manyly chick like Weaver did, Yeoh will play a tough chick like Vasquez, and for good measure throw in an android that will probably go nuts at some point. Might as well cut the middle man and hire Michael Biehn and Charles S. Dutton already

Here's an idea they could try. How bout forget the prequel idea and just make a sequel to Aliens that disregards Alien 3 and brings back Ellen Ripley (the real one). They could even have the movie open with the ending of Alien 3 then have her wake up and it was all a dream and we can get on with the real sequel.

Would rather see Olivia Wilde in the lead than the chick from the "The Girl Who" trilogy.

Unfortunately, even though it shouldn't be possible, i think olivia wilde is becoming somewhat overused in Hollywood. Surprised me turning up in a minor role in Russell crows the next three days which I saw the other week, and has a bunch of films lined up.

Can we all at least agree on one thing; Michael Fassbender is a badass and should be in every movie.

About the movie, it seems we know absolutely NOTHING about it now. Seriously. It may or may not be a reboot. It may or may not star Roomi as the lead. It may or may not be called ALIEN: PARADISE. It may or may not be about the space jockey seen in the first. In fact, all we know is that there will be 2 movies, Ridley Scott is PROBABLY directing, and it MIGHT feature an alien of some sort. I

I don't see how anyone can form any opinion for or against this movie seeing as how nothing is solid.

BTW, I still stick by my Fuck You to Lindelof for his shitty Harry Potter review (If you can call it that).

I certainly wouldn't say we know "absolutely nothing", since Ridley himself has discussed his intentions on numerous occasions right up until recently. He wants to tell about the Space Jockey and reveal the origin/purpose of the xenomorphs. Unless he's completely changed his mind in the past few weeks, that's probably what we're getting. I wouldn't describe that as "nothing" to base an early opinion on.

Alien is like Predator and Jurassic Park for me. The first movies are undisputed classics, but the sequels range from good to awful, and that is because it eventually just becomes a story about people just trying to avoid being killed by monsters. I like Scott (not thrilled about the title) and I hope he can capture the terror of the original film and not make it seem like everything we've seen before from the franchise.
