And now Cherry 2000 might get a remake

Jun. 6, 2011by: Dave Davis

With so many of the well-known movies and properties getting rebooted on the big screen, it must be time to sift through the VHS stacks looking for something else to remake.

How else do you explain the possibility of an update to CHERRY 2000, the 1987 back-rack sci-fi flick? Veteran producer Ed Pressman (who's also currently in the process of remaking his own THE CROW) is reportedly thinking about a redo of the post-apocalyptic cult fave.

The original featured Melanie Griffith as a tracker hired by a businessman to venture into the wasteland and locate a replacement model for his sexy android. This involves swinging a Mustang on a crane and getting shot at by perennial B-movie guy Tim Thomerson. (As I remember it...)

Griffith has apparently suggested her own daughter Dakota Johnson for the lead this time -- you might know her as the girl from THE SOCIAL NETWORK who's surprised she slept with Sean Parker/Justin Timberlake. Yeah, the one with the remarkable ass. Thumbs up!

Pressman (who produced the original) is currently considering ideas and directors.

Extra Tidbit: I certainly don't remember Griffith being that jacked in the original movie...

These are precisely the sort of movies that need to be remade...cheap, old, memorable enough to be considered a remake but only just barely, and capable of generating lots of cash.

Also, the story sounded cool...until androids started getting mentioned. Then it just sounded epic.

I agree with a poster below, these are the kinda films that should be remade. Films that have the kernel of a great concept but weren't delivered upon in the original.
I'd rather see something semi-obcsure like this dusted off and remade than some high profile remake that is pigeonholed to the well known original, and peoples memory of it, so it barely has any room to improve.
If we're gonna get remake after remake, at least steal from some films we might not have seen before, and

What next

Robotjox, Arena, China O'Brien, Eve of Destruction?
Seriously B-Movies being remaid. Crazy. That said I'd love to see a bigger budget version of Salute of the Jugger (Blood of Heroes) as that is a wicked B-Movie from that era. Had a great cast. Could actually keep some of them in it and bulk it up with younger stars. In fact fuck it, thius needs to be remade.

Cool, so when are they gonna remake Neon Maniacs. That had a great concept that was never really fully explored.

let's have sandwiches!

Weird ending. Strange idea to remake. But I'm not closed to the idea. I guess.

I watched the original not that long ago because someone reccomended it on a movie website I was on, and I have to say I really wasn't all that into it. I guess it just felt too cheesy to me. I wouldn't mind a remake to a movie that really wasn't all that good to begin with.
