And the 2012 Golden Schmoes winners are...!!

Feb. 22, 2013by: JoBlo

Unlike previous years where one film will dominate the Golden Schmoes (see table below), it was an overall mix of different films winning this year, which is what I personally prefer anyway (I think it's kinda boring to vote for the same movie in every single category). Despite both DJANGO UNCHAINED and THE DARK KNIGHT RISES getting the most nominations, it was THE AVENGERS that took away the most wins this year with 5, although DJANGO was close in second place with 4 victories. The two other films with more than 2 wins were the surprising THE CABIN IN THE WOODS and THE DARK KNIGHT RISES, both of which had 3 wins each.

Despite THE AVENGERS winning the most awards, it was DJANGO UNCHAINED that took away the big prize for "Favorite Movie of the Year" with Whedon's superheroes in 2nd place as the runner-up. Tarantino himself also won for "Best Screenplay" and "Best Music" (natch for most Tarantino films!), while Christoph Waltz and Leonardo DiCaprio fought it out for "Best Supporting Actor" with Waltz finishing atop.

MOST WINS @ GOLDEN SCHMOES (All-Time):

1. The Dark Knight (2008) 12
2. Return of the King (2003) 10
3. Inception (2010) 9
4. The Two Towers (2002) 9
5. Sin City (2005) 7
6. Fellowship of the Ring (2001) 7
7. Inglourious Basterds (2009) 6
8. The Departed (2006) 6
9. Pirates of the Caribbean (2003) 6
10. Memento (2001) 6
11. Drive (2011) 6

THE AVENGERS actually only had 1 win until the last 5 categories of the Golden Schmoes, where it took 4 categories in a row including "Best DVD/Blu-Ray", as well as the "Best Action Sequence" of the year for the Final Battle in NY City, "Most Memorable Scene" featuring The Hulk introducing Loki to the ground a few times (see GIF below), as well as the classic "Best T&A" for the leather outfit donned by the always sexy Scarlett Johansson (and check out the GIF below featuring our very own JimmyO in the background during our set visit).

If you're looking for films that didn't fare very well despite a bunch of nominations, you'd have to consider PROMETHEUS as the biggest disappointment of the lot, as it was nominated in 8 categories but only won 1 of them and that was (drum roll) -- "Biggest Disappointment" of the year. Voila! SKYFALL also didn't fare all that much better with 8 nominations of its own, while winning nothing. Too many other fanboy films seem to have nixed Bond this time around.

In terms of some of the more "interesting categories", it was nice to see the TWILIGHT film finally being voted as the "Worst Movie" of the year, after finishing as the runner-up last year and in 2009. Despite not being nominated for an Oscar for directing ARGO, our own schmoes knew much better by giving Ben Affleck the award for "Best Director" of the year (as well as the "Best Line of the Year" for "Argo f*ck yourself") over Tarantino. Go Ben! As for the individual categories, it was 21 JUMP STREET that you considered to be the "Best Comedy", WRECK-IT RALPH as "Best Animated Movie", LOOPER as the "Best Sci-Fi" film of the year, while the "Biggest Surprise" of the year was also 21 JUMP STREET, with just a few more votes than THE CABIN IN THE WOODS. And yes, ya'll considered Bane as the "Coolest Character" from 2012, only a few votes above Christoph Waltz's Shultz character from DJANGO.

And lastly, but not leastly, I couldn't finish this wrap-up without giving massive props to THE CABIN IN THE WOODS which despite scoring only 7 nominations, actually won 3 of them (and was runner-up in the 3 other categories!) including "Best Horror Movie", "Most Underrated Movie" only a few votes ahead of DREDD 3D and "Trippiest Movie" of the year. Kudos to Joss Whedon for being behind two of the biggest "fanboy" movies of the year! You can see the full list of this year's winners RIGHT HERE.

Thanks to everyone who participated again this year and who keep making our little awards ceremony what it has become today. We're actually considering having a "small ceremony" next year, at least to announce the nominees (and yes, we're hoping to get a couple of cool celebs to read them out). And if you haven't done so already, be sure to enter our OSCAR PREDICTION CONTEST right HERE! And stay tuned for our Oscar coverage, this coming Sunday, February 24th. See ya'll next year!

Cabin in the Woods is horror?

"The Cabin in the Woods" is too funny to be a horror film. It's just like "Planet Terror", bloody and gory, but to funny and entertaining to be a horror film. "Prometheus" was scarier and more intense than "The Cabin in the Woods". "The Cabin in the Woods" was a good clever film, but did not like the last few minutes at all. The part about feeding the gods was dumb. And people bitched about the aliens in "Kingdom of The Crystal Skull"??????

"Prometheus" was not the biggest disappointment of the year, it's a great Sci-fi film!

I'm glad to see the God Awful Prometheus win biggest Disappointment. I Can't believe Hulk didn't win for coolest character (and I figured Schulz would be the one to beat him If he didn't). I also think "I'm sorry, I couldn't resist." from Django should have won (or been nominated) for Best Line. I

Cabin in the Woods had so much momentum because it gave people hope of horror films making a comeback. I can name about 200 horror films off the top of my head that are better than it, but look at it's competition! Paranormal Activities, Sinister, VHS weren't enough to scare a 7 yr old.

Cabin in the Woods?

I'm sorry but Cabin in the Woods was a horrible movie... I went into it with high expectations just to have them all shot to shit by this boring and over the top cheesy movie.

Shame that The Dark Knight Rises couldn't finish Nolan's Dark Knight reign as Favorite Movie of the Year.

*Spoilers

Cabin In The Woods winning 3 awards, ruined it for me. Aside from the one sequence (the climax) the movie is awful. And one scene doesn't make an entire movie good. The characters were so bland and generic. The beginning took too long to get going. I remember watching this a second time with friends and they just talked continuously through the first 25 min because they were so bored. But those aren't the only things wrong with the movie. The premise of the movie is just lazy. One big

The premise of the movie is just lazy. One big collection of horror villains and monsters isn't creative nor original. It's just the reverse of The Expendables. So instead of 80's and 90's action heroes, you get a collage of popular horror killers. That isn't creative. And I really didn't care if there is supposed be some underlying statement in the movie, about how generic horror movies have become. Instead of spoofing the genre, how about they come up with something better. I really do not see the love, people here at joblo have for this movie.

Solid Selections of winners this year. I liked all the winners and think the Joblo voters did a great job in choosing the winners. The only thing I would have liked to see different was The Dark Knight Rises winning most overrated. Oh well close enough. Still enjoyed The Hunger Games

odd year for me

There were a ton of movies that were great this year, and a few i was in the minority for not liking. So as far as i was expecting, im about as satisfied as i could've hoped for with this. See you all next year

A little upset with Cabin in the Woods winning best horror. Was it a good movie? Sure! I liked it. I know this is all just personal preference so I'm not walking over anyone's opinion but I voted for Sinister because it was an effectively creepy movie. I mean damn, if you can creep me out from your opening scene, then you did good. Again, I liked both movies but Sinister had a bigger impact on me and I got more out of it then CITW. Oh, well. At least V/H/S didn't win.

Wreck-it Ralph

I was super surprised at how good it was, so I'm glad that it won.

I think the praise for 21 Jump Street is a bit overrated. Loved it, but I think it benefited from an awful year for comedies. Silver Linings is a better film, but I guess it's hurt from not being a comedy through and through

Happy with most of the results - but Prometheus? Biggest disappoint of the year? REALLY? After the shit that was the AVP movies y'all should be sucking Ridley's dick for making a movie that's actually good and ambitious. SO SORRY IT WASN'T A DIRECT REMAKE OF ALIENS, GUYS. I rarely post on strikebacks anymore because anonymous douchebags give everyone thumbs down, no matter what the comment. Probably the same people who found Prometheus disappointing. Whatever. Give me your thumbs down and then

Strange. In the Golden Schmoe FAQ people were asked to vote only on movies they saw. So why did so many schmoes watch Twilight: Breaking Dawn part 2 when they hate the whole franchise?

I actually voted for That's My Boy after seeing five minutes of it. They won't let you submit without voting in all categories, and usually I haven't seen the movies nominated in that category.

A good list of winners here, I expected Avengers or Argo getting Best Pic but Django is a nice surprise. Overall I like these choices, all well-deserved.

Django is no Basterds.

but it was awesome enough I guess.
I have a problem with the "Best trailer" category. Obviously, the best trailer of 2012 was "Man Of Steel", so I guess you guys should name the category "Best trailer for a 2012 movie"

Django was clearly not as good as Inglorious. Loved both of them, but Django is a brutally simple film.

Basterds was better written than Django. Come on. Django is still great cinema, but nothing new if you consider Tarantino's filmography alone. Even Christoph Waltz has the same role than in Basterds, except that Schultz is at the other end of the moral spectrum.

Even though I wanted to see Avengers win favorite movie of the year, I am pretty happy with the way all the winners for each category.

Here's to doing it again next year.
