Andrea Riseborough in talks to play villain Top Dollar in The Crow remake

05.21.2015

The Crow Corin Hardy Andrea Riseborough Jack Huston Jessica Brown Findlay

Back when Luke Evans was still attached to THE CROW remake, the actor said the plan was to "be authentic and loyal to the original comic," however one character is apparently getting a sex change. Deadline has learned that OBLIVION and BIRDMAN star Andrea Riseborough is in negotiations to play Top Dollar.

While Top Dollar was just a lowly drug dealer in the comic, in the 1994 movie, he was the head of the crime organization responsible for the deaths of Eric Draven and Shelly Webster, with Michael Wincott starring as the eyeball eating villain. There's no word on if Top Dollar will also be the crime boss in the remake, but I could see Riseborough playing the character similar to Lena Headey's Ma-Ma from DREDD.

Boardwalk Empire's Jack Huston is set to play the undead vigilante for director Corin Hardy, and although a couple of months ago it was reported that Jessica Brown Findlay (Downton Abbey) had been cast as Shelly, there hasn't been an official announcement about the actress joining the project.

THE CROW doesn't have a release date yet, but filming may finally start in the near future, and if it does begin production soon, it will likely open sometime in 2016.

Well, there goes the idea of being faithful to the comics.

I didn't like they way they made Top Dollar the boss/leader of the gang in the original film (it was T- Bird in the comics), and I feared they would stick with that idea for the new film (along with Eric being a musician, etc), but this is the first piece of news that confirms that they are NOT sticking to the comics, which would have set the movie apart from the Brandon Lee film, and made it a must see for me.

And the shits keep on coming for this re-make.
It's funny how they're always so close to making this happen, then it's back to the drawing board. Personally, I think it's Brandon Lee haunting from his grave to make sure it never does get re-made...

That really changes the vibe of the movie

In the original comic, Eric and Shelley's deaths were a random thing, a rape/murder that happened just because the villains felt like it. Changing Top Dollar's sex alters that, and potentially puts it more in line with the 1994 movie.

That's a shame: I really liked the idea of this random atrocity creating The Crow.

I could not agree more. The thing this remake/retelling had going for it was that it was supposed to be faithful to the comics, which was superior to the original film. This news makes it seem as if that isn't really the goal after all, which is disappointing. Next thing you know they will announce casting for "Sarah", and show Eric holding a guitar. It doesn't seem to bother anyone else that the original film had Eric and Shelley being killed as part of a real estate scheme, yet the

The random crime of the comics is much scarier and realistic IMO.
