Andrew Garfield cast in Spider-Man reboot!

Jul. 1, 2010by: Mike Sampson

Just earlier this week word leaked that Josh Hutcherson had signed on to star in the upcoming SPIDER-MAN reboot. But no wait, it's really Jamie Bell. But no wait, no one really knows. It's actually Andrew Garfield. Sony has just announced that the BOY A star, soon to be seen in David Fincher's THE SOCIAL NETWORK and Mark Romanek's NEVER LET YOU GO, will star as Peter Parker.

Said director Marc Webb of Garfield's casting: "Though his name may be new to many, those who know this young actors work understand his extraordinary talents. He has a rare combination of intelligence, wit, and humanity. Mark my words, you will love Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker."

Producer Laura Ziskin added: "In the end, we all agreed that in addition to being an extraordinary actor, Andrew had the right mix of humor, youth, and pathos, along with an underlying sense of strength and power necessary to bring Peter Parker and Spider-Man to life on screen."

While I think Garfield is a very talented actor, I just don't see him as Peter Parker. For one, he's too old (currently age 27) for the high school reboot they seem to be planning. For another, I think he's just a little too dashing and debonair for the geeky Parker. But hey, that's just me. What do you guys think??

UPDATE - Check out some shots of Garfield and director Marc Webb at the announcement event.

He looks fine to me. I'm actually kinda looking forward to this. While I enjoyed the previous Spiderman movies, there was something about them that always felt a little off, like they could have done so much more with it. I can only hope they succeed here.

Well, it's way better than Tobey Maguire. Even though that's not a big achievement. Go for it.

Got to see him in some stills or full costume first. But I don't think this reboot is a good idea.

I still have no idea who this bloke is, but after searching a bit and looking at pictures of him without red hair he really does look the part. Apparently he can act as well which bodes well.

Hopefully the spider that bites Andrew Garfield doesn't give him a boost of estrogen as well. We really don't need another permanently whimpering Spider-Man.

I'm not sold, but I watched some clips of his on youtube and he definitely could pull off Peter Parker, though I'm not sure how he'll manage the action. Plus, he's 26 now, but factor in when they'll start filming and such, he'll be 28-29 by the time the movie's released. Really?

Putr him in a nerd sweater and glasses and he should be fine..you dont see his face in the costume much unless he's unmasked. More looking forward to who they cast as the villains.

I think he might be good he's obviously the best actor out of the rest. Even though he's old I'm sure they could make him look a little younger there's guys at my school that look way older.

The only downside is the guy clearly doesn't look high school. Is this unnecessary? Yeah, probably, but Marc Webb is a solid director and Andrew Garfield is a really good actor. Check him out in Boy A if you wanna see his work.

If they cast Michael Fassbender as a villain and find a solid Mary Jane, this could work.

It doesn't need to made, but it is being made, so I at least feel good about casting decision.

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

The Good: The dude is relatively unknown.

The Bad: The dude's talent is mediocre compared to other possible "unknowns".

The Ugly: The dude... period.

He's 26

He's 26 already. I thought the point of this recast was to find a younger person to play Peter Parker. Tobey Maguire was 27 when the first Spider-Man came out and he did not age well for the part. Horrible decision... 26 year playing a high school kid. Brilliant.

I had zero enthusiasm for this before, but now it's dipped into the negative.

Did anyone look at the nose on this kid?!? Not only would people be able to figure out that Peter Parker was Spider-Man from the gargantuan nose, but in 3D that thing is going to have kids wetting themselves in fear every time he swings that ginormous proboscis into view of the camera.

A reboot, in 3-D nonetheless, I still feel is unnecessary but if this is the way it's gotta be then it might as well be him. The guy has spirit as an actor and has the Parker look. Plus, he's just about the same age as Maguire in 2002. In all honesty, this may surpass Raimi's work. While I dig the transition from comic page to screen and really dug SM2, I always felt a sense of detachment from Raimi's work, a kind of silliness. I hate the idea of starting over in such a short time frame but the

A.) Im pissed this dude is the new Spidey, B.) Who cares who they get to play him because if you can't put a good story to the movie, a good supporting cast, and cast the villians correctly, then what the fuck does it matter?! Just another example of how Hollywood is gonna fuck up the comic world (ex: Spider-Man 3, X-Men 3, Fantastic Four 2, HULK, and now the casting for THOR and Capt. America). Jesus.. I wish the Apocalypse would happen so I don't have to see anymore Hollywood dumbasses ruin

I thought Marc Webb is a very talented director and Andrew Garfield is a very talented actor. I'm willing to bet that this could be great. I think I'm just always going to be disappointed that we didn't get to see Raimi do his Vulture-villain Spider-Man film that we've been hearing about for years. It was probably going to be great, but alas it's just going to be another "what if" film, like Tarantino's Vega Brothers film.

Having only seen him in the recent (and amazing) Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus, he's certainly got the range to pull off insecure as parker and then the total switch to cocky. I can see it. And he certainly looks the part. I never liked Tobey as Parker. He did a good job with the nerdy side to begin with but never got witty. He never really transformed into SPIDER-MAN. I agree the remake is unecessary but since it's happening regardless at least it's someone who's got the range and chops to pull

if you had the rights to something worth millions upon millions of dollars, why would you just give them away.

does the internet breed this kind of stupidity, or does stupidity simply flock to the internet? sounds like a good topic for a CMC course.

Well, now I'm very conflicted.

My feelings keep jumping all over the place. When it was announced that Raimi wasn't going to continue his campy take on Spider-Man and include Vulture (KA KOW!) as the villain, I was actually relieved. When Marc Webb was announced as director I was intrigued, because (500) DAYS OF SUMMER was amazing. And then they announced that they wanted Parker to go back to high school and have the film focus on his teen angst. Thats the moment I lost interest. Why reboot a franchise if you're not going

Why reboot a franchise if you're not going to give it a bit more edge in the process?

Now they've gone and cast Andrew Garfield the very definition of a talented young actor on the brink of stardom as Peter Parker ... and I'm back to being very intrigued.

I think he has the right look, I think he's exceptionally talented (watch BOY A or THE IMAGINARIUM OF DOCTOR PARNASSUS for proof) and I'm glad they didn't cast a 13-year-old in the part.

So I'm now prepared to wait and see. If they cast the right actress for Mary Jane this time, and ramp up the action (we want action Sony, not PARKER'S CREEK) this could turn from bad idea into greatness.

We'll see.

and as for the reboot complaint

it's happening. i'm pretty sure we can't stop it unless we hire some assassin to kill garfield and webb. so in my own opinion, we should all accept the fact that this is happening and move on instead of complaining about something that will inevitably be released. that's just me.

At least he looks the part. I hope he does great things, not that I am FOR the remake or anything.

This movie is going to suck ungodly amounts of ass, and I pray the studio loses millions of dollars for making it.

I can't really say whether I like this or not cause I haven't seen this guy act yet. People do seem to be complaining that he's too old to play a high school student, but how old was Toby Maguire when he played Peter? I guess it's better to re-boot the franchise since it's a new actor.

He's got a young Cary Elwes vibe going on- and that's completely wrong for the part. And he def looks like he's about 30, which he is at 27, so that's outta context already.

Ok I'm confused, as usual. Wasn't the big selling point of this reboot to have peter parker in high school? That dude looks older than 27, like mid 30s. Then again who gives a shit. Anybody want a beer?

At least dude can act

And he does look a little like Peter Parker. But I still don't have any faith in this "reboot".

I've seen his work in Parnassus and thought he was pretty good but I had no idea the dude was 27 years of age, he does look younger though, I can actually see him as Peter but I'm still pretty pissed at Sony for rebooting this, now that Parker has been cast I wonder who they have in mind to be the villan? I'd hate to see them redo all of the villans Raimi did for his films if this film actually is successful and spawns sequels, I say they finally do the Lizard.

Oh, this is THAT guy? Damn, he looked no older than sixteen in that movie!

I wish I gave even a single shit about this movie. I'd be excited about this news if I did. Ohhh well.

27!

i've been on a somewhat positive note about this reboot thing. i sincerely think it's not a bad idea but to recast a 27 year old actor as Peter when they're making it a point to tell the story of Pete from when he was in highschool... that makes no sense to me.
fucking Tobey Maguire was 27 when he made spiderman 1. i checked... i mean... what the hell...

i got NOTHING against the actor. I saw imaginarium of doctor parnassus and i actually remember digging him in it.

it just seems kinda

spider-man 2 was perfect and i really think raimi should've been given another chance. he knew where the mistakes with 3 were and was more than capable of changing it. spider-man is my all-time fave superhero and i wish sony would just give the rights back to marvel and let them not f it up.

He looks the part but...

...he's WAY to old for a high school reboot. They should've just stayed with Tobey.

I just have no interest in this reboot, no matter who the actors are.
The Raimi movies are too good and too recent to just chuck away and pretend they never existed.

Yeah i buy it.

I think he's got the lankiness of Peter Parker and also his face is kind of forgettable too. Very ordinary. I think he could pull off nerdy and insecure and really surprise a lot of people when it comes to the action. I could definitely see why and indie(not independent, indie) director like Webb chose him.

I was nervous about his english accent after watching him in a terrible two parter of Doctor Who but somebody tipped me off to Lions For Lambs and he pulled off a good accent so i have

One thing is for sure i do prefer this call to Tobey Maguire but i don't prefer it to Donald Glover. I am adamant that that would have been something special.

But like Clint Eastwood as the dark knight or Watchmen by Terry Gilliam that's another comic book movie i'd love to see but never will.

nice casting, although i wished they went another way

for those who are unfamiliar with Andrew Garfield, check out Boy A, Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus and the first of the Red Riding Trilogy. and if you want to know if he can pull off the American accent (he's British), check out Lions For Lambs.

anyways, i have mixed emotions about this casting. on one hand, it's great for him, as he'll get some recognition now, and for the franchise, as he's a really good, young, up and coming actor. but on the other, i would have preferred he avoided THIS

Good for him.

Hopefully he is the right choice and Sony made the right choice. Nobody liked the Tobey casting either, so im not jumping to conclusions. I even remember people talking trash about RDJ as Iron Man once upon a time. So hopefully this unknown can live up to the hype.

Wait...

I thought they were going for someone younger? By the time this is released, he'll be older than Tobey was when the first film was released. If this didn't take place during Peter's high school years, things would be different.
What can you do, though. I'm still not down with this remake, but as a Spider-Man fan to the end, I'm obligated to see it.

I still don't like the idea of this reboot. I never hated Spiderman 3 as much as some people, I've seen far worse comic book movies. I think this guy could make a good parker and Webb can probably do a good job with the movie, but I'd rather see Spiderman 4 than a reboot. I honestly don't think audiences will respond well to the reboot, Incredible Hulk and Punisher War Zone were reboot too soon after the original movies and didn't do any better than the first movies. Only time will tell.

I say skip the lousy origin this time around and go with a more mature aged Peter Parker 30+ (no not this guy..bad choice IMO). Why keep him young in a reboot? I wouldn't for the new series-I'd go in totally new direction. The origin will kind leak out in script when the time is appropriate.

What's the point?

Wasn't the ENTIRE point of the "reboot" of a [link] franchise because the producers decided to take it back to high school and cast an authentic teenager? Sure, maybe not the best idea, but if they're going to cast a 27-year-old, then why not just bite the bullet and compromise with Raimi and co. and not confuse the fuck out of audiences? And the way they're pushing the 3D so hard makes me feel like that might have been one of the reasons Raimi got fed up and left (and this is coming from

It just seems redundant, unnecessary, whatever.

Better than the ones listed

I like it. He's better than the ones that were known before, and he was good in Parnassus. Don't eff this up though. Spidey is my hero. Seriously.
And "Beloved franchise?" How about "beloved first two movies"

Does this mean that all the "High School Reboot" rumors are false? God I hope so.

I can see this guy as Spiderman, but there's no way in hell that he can get away with portraying a young teenager. Things are looking slightly up.

Maybe it's silly for me to say this again

I'm ok with the actor, I'm not OK with this reboot. I still can't figure out how they'll replace such a loved and succesful franchise with that budget and sending us to high-school again. An evil part of me wants this to suck big time, cause what they did to Raimi is... nameless.

Read any of the ultimate Spider-man or any comics with Spidey from the last 25 years. Peter is an average good looking guy like Garfield. It's his shyness, awkwardness, intelligence that made him an outcast.

BOY A has been sitting in my PVR for a very long time. I think its time I finally watch it to see what this guy can do. His face works, but 26? Still I'm game if they let Marc Webb make a real movie, for better or worse, and not just another blockbuster.
