Andrew Garfield says "screw the critics" regarding The Amazing Spider-man 2

03.27.2014

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN has had critics ever since the announcement was made that a director other than Sam Raimi would be helming an adventure featuring the friendly neighborhood webslinger. Marc Webb, Andrew Garfield, and Emma Stone set out to create a more gritty and DARK KNIGHT-esque superhero film while also creating a darker and more conspiracy-centric origin for Peter Parker's superpowers. The results were box office gold while fans were lukewarm on the film. But, with the announcement that this summer's THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 will be followed by two more sequels and a slew of villain-focused spin-offs, fans began to worry that Sony would be oversaturating the market with Spider-man.

Then, the trailers came out showcasing a much brighter, looser, and CGI-friendly adventure in THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2. Gone is the gritty realism in favor of brightly colored comic book hues and tons of villains. But, will it work? Star Andrew Garfield thinks so and also has some choice words regarding the film. In an interview with IGN, Andrew Garfield addressed how they approached making THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 after rebooting the series just a few years ago.

In the first movie we were obligated to retreading the origin story which Tobey Maguire and Sam Raimi did so beautifully. But now that that's done, we get to own the character as filmmakers and we get to own it as Peter. There is a life imitating art kind of thing going on, I think. So, I am super excited because [THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2] was more fun to make. Because of that, I think when I put on that suit I felt freer, I felt like, you know, I can't think of a word to use that is not the F-word, but like screw the critics, screw the scrutiny. And, you know, that is the motto for life as well."

Garfield explains it that, like Peter, the filmmakers decided to forget what everyone thought and just make this movie their own because you can only make the movie you want to make. While movies are made for their audiences, there is something to be said for not becoming bogged down in the criticism that pervades the Internet and setting out just to make the best movie you can.

I was a fan of THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN, but the sequel already looks a hell of a lot more like Sam Raimi's trilogy. The picture is brighter, the action is over the top and fun, and I will venture to say that Andrew Garfield looks and sounds a lot more like the comic book character than Tobey Maguire ever did. It remains to be seen if that holds true outside of the trailers, but consider me along for the ride.

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 hits theaters on May 2, 2014.

I Love Andrew Garfield

I've said this before and I'll say it again. You can't judge a movie until you actually see it. I hate when people assume a movie is going to be a mess, before they even watch it. Just because Spider-Man 3 may have been a bit all over the place, doesn't meant that Amazing Spider-Man 2 is going to be the same way. Different directors, different actors, different visions.

FUCK ANDREW GARFIELD

Marc Webb's direction and Andrew Garfield casting was a horrible idea (isn't he too fucking old and he looks it?). Marc Webb just rehashed Sam Raimi's beautiful camera work and storyline with a sprinkle of comic references and people think its the best film. Spiderman is a dick in the 1st film, he threw a cops gun away and went GTA 5 on enemies, and this is more of ULTIMATE SPIDERMAN rather than AMAZING SPIDERMAN for any comic nerds knowledge, it is trash and I cant wait till they reboot this

yeah screw teh critics, just because these 2 movies have blown balls and they already made better versions of these same movies I am making now, don't listen to the overriding bad reviews of these movies and my work in them. We will only use MySpace and Bing twice in this movies to make it more contemporary. DOnt listen to these people whose jobs is to actually judge movies on there merits and not the geekhood that follows them, if this were in Hollywood everyone would tell me how great it was

He didn't sound like this at all when he gave interviews at the Singapore press junket today. In fact, I found him very genuine, earnest and intelligent, more so than either Emma Stone or Jamie Foxx. Andrew Garfield definitely has a love for the character, and the two Comic-Con appearances (it was his idea to pretend to be a con-goer asking a question) definitely show that. Honestly, if I were him, I would be more than a little ticked off with all the negative reaction before the movie is

I think it's entertaining, but definitely in danger of being way too cheesy.

Why be combative, Garfield? It's just unwise and immature. What is the point of that if you are SO confident (sounding)?

While I agree that's the right attitude and mentality that he should have, the fact that he is voicing it to the public really screams to me that he has no idea whether they made something quality or complete shit.

Honestly I don't think Garfield's comment is inappropriate in any way. He's playing Spider-Man, his childhood hero. That must be one of the most awesome thing that could ever happen to him. If I were Andrew Garfield I wouldn't care about what critics say either. This doesn't mean that audience shouldn't criticize the film, but at this point there is little that criticism can do to make the film any better. Now it's just the question whether the reception of the film is good enough to warrant

I liked Amazing Spider-man, but I prefer the Raimi movies. Several fans were expecting Spider-man 4, so when that got axed in favor of a reboot, it was a losing battle. I look at this new movie and wonder why they didn't want to do one more with Raimi, it seems like they're copying his style more than the first Amazing Spider-man.

I love the passion from Garfield (he obviously cares about the character), but I hate it when actors/filmmakers get disrespectful of people just because there's criticism on their product. If it's positive feedback, no problem. Negative feedback, we get "Screw you". Classless.

Did critics break into Garfield's and piss on his because his just came out of no where? And if he doesn't like being criticized for his performances then he can give back the millions he's making and find another profession! Even the smallest theater companies have critics watch and judge them so he should take it like an adult! I feel like you and many people are blowing his comments way out of proportion. All he said was that when it comes to playing your part, you cannot think about what the critics are gonna say, which is the attitude anyone SHOULD have. If you spend all your time only doing what you think everyone wants and not what you want to do, then what's the point? You play the character how YOU think it should be played. That's not whining.

He said screw the critics and that is completely uncalled for! What about the critics that are rooting for the movie? Screw them too? He gets paid millions to also sell the film (hence the publicity actors do) by the their studios. Does it really help to randomly antagonize those publicize the film too? There is so much wrong with this article I don't know where to start...

Yes the last Spider-Man movie made money, did it open less and have a smaller domestic total than any of the 3 previous movies before it? Yup... By a lot. Did it also have the advantage of inflated ticket prices and 3D? Yup.

Stop acting like the last Spider-Man movie is the goose laying golden eggs, you had a fresh chance to start over and a lot of ppl, comic fans or not felt they didn't do a good job. Is it open to

Is it open to debate... Sure... Kind of... Debating that it was a good movie is kind of the loosing side of that debate to be on.

Intentions play an important part when DOING ANYTHING... What was Sonys intentions in rebooting Spider-Man, are most the descriptive words to describe those reasons negative? Are you surprised you ended up with a negative result? Are you surprised the sequel lacks focus and seems confused? Hmmmm wonder why?

I can actually get it. When your making a film you have to do the best you can and ultimately its not worth getting upset about what people may or may not think. I've loved some pretty hated films and It doesn't really bother me that others didn't.

Garfield sounds like a bitch with his comments. No one asked for a reboot. Especially so soon after Spider Man 3. Amazing Spider Man was average at best and the sequel does look much better, but he shouldn't be commenting like this about the films and it's fans and audience.

He should be so lucky to have actually gotten the part of Spider Man.

Well, he's entitled to try to not think about what critics say, so from that point, whatever. I am interested in seeing how the sequel goes and will give it a fair chance. Spider-man 2 is hard to top though. It was an almost perfect film, imo anyway. I do agree with others that Raimi's biggest fault is the lack of chemistry between Maguire and Dunst and even doofus...what's his name. Harry Osborne actor. I can't stand him in general.
That aside, will give ASM2 a fair chance, no expectations.

I can understand his frustration

ASM got a lot of things right that the first trilogy didn't: namely a leading actor that gave a crap and had some chemistry with his leading lady. I like the major cast list of ASM better than the first trilogy (Topher Grace as Eddie Brock? Really?) so I'm looking forward to seeing how ASM2 lays out.

His chemistry with Kirsten Dunst was non-existent. They had to lure him back for 2 and 3. He was clearly going through the motions for 3, and it was embarrassing to watch him sleepwalk through one of the greatest storylines in the Spider-Man universe. At least Andrew Garfield cares about the character, not the paycheque.

They suck and sounds like someone got negative early screening reports (supposedly the movie sucks worse than the first one) and is crying like a bitch.

There you have it, this movie is worse than the first one and critics who saw early screenings are not liking it.

Spiderman doesnt have that.an key point of the spiderman mythos is him developing and learning to use his powers. You can't take a new spiderman and have him already an adult. It took years even in the comic books for him to stop being a student. Spiderman is the average kid who gets lucky, he is the teenaged superhero, that is what makes him so unique. Superman was born, Batman trained, Spiderman was thrust upon.

Also Webb's origin has a lot to deal with Peter's parents. I hope that plot thread goes somewhere fast. Its what makes this universe deeper than Raimi's. This isn't Spiderman facing the villain of the week anymore, this is Spiderman dealing with a history of characters. He didnt just get superpowers, he stumbled into something big and intricate. I agree an origin story was the write direction.

In the past, the future of a superhero movie hinged on the success of the current installation. They wouldnt know if they were going to have another movie or not and would pile on all the characters they can. Now, unless this new movie drastically fails, there will still be Spiderman 3, 4, and Venom. They dont have to pile on all the characters, which means they have something really special planned (i hope).

You weren't obligated to retread the origin story. Comic book characters are like James Bond. You never have to remake stories for these characters. These characters have decades worth of storylines to pull from. You can reboot, and start with a fresh new adventure without remaking anything.
