Andrew Niccol to script Lionsgate’s Monopoly movie

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

Believe it or not, but after the failure of BATTLESHIP, Hasbro is not convinced that board game adaptations are a bad idea. Despite Universal and Ridley Scott no longer being involved in making Monopoly happen, Hasbro's own movie production company Allspark Pictures will still bring the financial game to the big screen. Partnering with Lionsgate, the film now has GATTACA and THE TRUMAN SHOW screenwriter Andrew Niccol on board to pen the story.

The Wrap revealed the news about the status of the film along with this brief plot synopsis. Whether it is true or just a gag on their part, I will leave up to you. The real story can't be far off, right?

The story will center on a boy from Baltic Avenue who uses both Chance and Community in a quest to make his fortune, taking him on a fun, adventure-filled journey. Along the way he will have to make his own luck, while hoping to avoid going directly to jail.

Between the TRANSFORMERS franchise, the moderate success of OUIJA, and the pending JEM AND THE HOLOGRAMS films, it doesn't seem like this is anything but the tip of the iceberg for the toy company to plunder the childhood of anyone raised in the 1980s. It must be too much to ask for these adaptations to be more along the lines of the great CLUE. Just wait for Hungry Hungry Hippos (no, I'm not joking).
