Andrew Stanton returning to animation with Pixar's Finding Nemo 2

Jul. 17, 2012by: Alex Maidy

Looks like Andrew Stanton will be staying away from live action for a bit longer. The JOHN CARTER director was just officially announced to be directing FINDING NEMO 2 for Disney Pixar. Deadline reports that directing the animated sequel to Pixar's second highest grossing film (after TOY STORY 3) is part of a deal that will allow him to direct another live action film next.

Disney and Pixar have made no comment on FINDING NEMO 2 but it would likely not be hitting theaters any time soon. Pixar's release slate is pretty full as it is. MONSTERS UNIVERSITY comes out in 2013, followed by THE GOOD DINOSAUR, the untitled movie about the brain from Pete Docter, Lee Unkrich's Dia de los Muertos movie as well as FINDING NEMO 3D coming out this September.

Stanton has won 2 Oscars for his animated films WALL-E and FINDING NEMO. His work with Pixar has been outstanding, so it is understandable that DIsney wants to make sure that JOHN CARTER was a fluke and will not follow him to whichever film he makes next.

I still love FINDING NEMO and hope this ends up being TOY STORY 2 quality and not CARS 2.

Wait and see...

Since we never found out what happened exactly to Nemo's mother, I Can see him and is Dad looking for her after some clues make them realise she MIGHT be alive...

why?

in a world where the life expectancy of the clown fish is 3-6 years, how the fuck does one fish get lost that often? sounds like shit to me. cars2 was shit and this will be too. Toy story 3 ftw.

Well, Finding Nemo was one of Pixar's best at the time (and really still is) so I would love to see them return to that world. Also, Ellen DeGeneres must be doing backflips because all she ever talks about is wanting to do a sequel. I guess they could make a "Taken 2" scenario where it is Marlin who needs to be found by Nemo and Dory, introducing new characters and locales.

For the Incredibles I'm not 100% on this but I think Brad Bird has a lot to do with this. The characters clearly mean a lot to him and he might not want to force anything just for the sake of popular demand. Personally I think this is a strange choice, given that Finding Nemo, while chock-full of great performances, was too sporadic to be considered the kind of ensamble piece that usually coaxes a sequel. The toy possibilities were also always pretty limited with this franchise so

The story was pretty open and shut and I would just assume keep it a happily ever after.

So Carter bombs because Disney doesn't know how to market it, than blames Stanton and forces him to make a sequel to Pixar's second biggest money maker for him to direct live action again? Well that sucks.
I would argue Finding Nemo is pixar's 2nd "most popular" movie after the Toy Story trilogy, so it doesn't surprise me that Disney is pushing for this. I hope Pixar can find a good story and make the most of this, but I'd rather have Nemo as 1 fantastic stand-alone film.

WHO ASKED FOR THIS????

Cuz I sure didn't.
Remember when movies didn't have to have sequels?

I agree that this sequel is completely unnecessary, but i will welcome any pixar film with open arms.
Also, I am quite surprised that Pixar can find a second story for Finding Nemo but can't for the Incredibles.

A sequel seems unnecessary, but it'll probably turn out good like Toy Story's 2 and 3.

Even though John Carter didn't do well it was an awesome movie and Finding Nemo and Wall-E were great films. I have no doubt Finding Nemo 2 will be excellent as well. Even though Cars 2 wasn't that good I still enjoyed it. I just hope Pixar gets out of their funk because Cars 2 obviously wasn't on par with Pixars lineup, and Brave is probably my least favorite Pixar movie now.

Terrible idea. Don't get me wrong... I love Finding Nemo. But it's not worth a sequel.
