Andy Lau exits Iron Man 3 due to an ironic development

06.25.2012

Andy Lau smile and light

Andy Lau (HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS, INFERNAL AFFAIRS) is a talented guy, and it would have been awesome to see him play a part (literally and figuratively) in the saga of Tony Stark. Lau was set to take on the role of a "businessman [who] has his daughter kidnapped which lures Iron Man to China" and whose technology eventually helps Iron Man to defeat Guy Pearce's Aldrich Killian and his Extremis biotechnology.

The aforementioned irony comes from the fact that the fifty year-old Lau has dropped out due to wishing to spend more time with his newborn daughter (she's 1 1/2 months old).

The current goal is to find "a male actor over the age of 40 with strong English skills" in place of Lau, with the top two contenders being "Chinese actors Chen Daoming and Wu Xiubo. The 57-year-old Chen is highly respected for his versatility and is perhaps best known for playing Emperor Qin Shi Huang in the 2002 film Hero, while the 43-year-old Wu rose to acclaim as the protagonist in the Chinese television drama Before the Dawn."

I'm not familiar with the latter actor, but I do know that the Chen Daoming was phenomenal in HERO.  Here's to hoping we find out about the new casting soon.

Extra Tidbit: In the words of Andy Lau: "Sing more and you get better, fight more and you get better... but acting is hard."

Tony Leung Chiu Wai would be ideal, but he's not the type of actor that would go for supporting roles, and this would be most likely be a throwaway role as usual in Hollywood. Other wise, Anthony Wong, as he's no stranger to Hollywood ("The Mummy 3" and "Love In the Time of Cholera")

Chow Time

I would think Chow Yun Fat would be a no brainer if his schedule is open. Donnie Yen also has great English and could be considered even though this role may not call for him to use his fighting skills. I am not sure how Tony Leung's english is but he would also be an interesting choice.

That's just too bad, I would have loved to see Andy Lau in a big Hollywood film, he's a super-smooth cat. As for casting suggestions, I'm leaning towards Chin Han, most famous as Lau in The Dark Knight.

That's a shame, but it's completely understandable. Family comes first, after all.

Though Chen Dao-Ming's good, I have to wonder how much the character would change, as he and Lau have very different screen personalities. Chen has a very stoic, refined feel, while Lau is, well, Andy Lau. But whatever, I'm sure they'll make it work.

And yeah, I don't know the other guy at all.

Thats so beautiful! He did what he had to do but I'm sure we haven't seen the last of Andy because if his talent was spotted and someone thought it was a good idea for him to be in this movie, then his future is looking bright.
As for the replacements I guess the guy from Hero is OK mainly because I loved that movie. Not sure who the other guy is but I'm willing to give him a chance.

I think it's Fat time again. Chow-Yun that is.
By the way, this isn't dramatic irony or even regular irony.

Aww, man! I'm actually looking forward to see Andy Lau in Iron Man 3. He's one of my favorite actors. I understand why he doesn't want to do the film but this could be his chance to really go on International stage. Oh, well. Tough luck.
