Andy Serkis first to sign up for the Rise of the Planet of the Apes sequel

Nov. 3, 2011by:

With a $450M worldwide gross, it’s a no brainer that RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES was going to get a sequel, even if the end did seem rather conclusive.

Even with good looking humans James Franco and Freida Pinto in the headlining roles, it’s obvious which star absolutely must return for a new film. That would be Ceaser himself, Andy Serkis, who has just closed a deal to reprise his role as the ape. It may be all CGI, but the lead monkey could not exist without him, and the studio realizes that and are reportedly paying him quite a sum to return.

As for Franco and Pinto, their fates are unknown, but with the way the last film ended, it wouldn’t surprise me if their return wasn’t necessary.

There has been brief discussion about the plot of a sequel, centered on apes building their own society as the world burns, but yeah, it’s a tough sell that creatively this reboot needs a follow-up. But who makes movies for creative reasons anymore?

Extra Tidbit: Fox is pondering an Oscar push for Serkis this year. Think he could have a shot?

Yeah the way the film ended it was pretty clear that the occurrences in Rise were anomalous and not tantamount to a true take over by apes. The only way I could see it succeeding is if the apes who did escape (and survive) had moved themselves somewhere isolated where they trained themselves in the way of culture and intellgience and developed their own society, the first model for the Planet of the Apes. I would call it: Education of the Planet of the Apes.

Even though I didn't like this movie at all. I think what you're saying makes sense. Don't get why you're getting thumbed down.

Probably..

my favorite movie of the year so far and one that I would welcome a sequel just to see Serkis do his thing.

best summer movie of the summer

As long as the sequel isn't Emmerich-esque.
Taj Mahal - smashed by apes!
Eiffel Tower - swung on by apes!
three gorges dam - toppled by apes!
Actually I take it back. All that shit would be cool.
Just don't lose the apes beating on cops angle.

I don't know if Serkis has a shot with the Academy, but he sure does deserve more recognition. For me, its one of the most effective performance this year. Serkis is the reason this film made such a great impression on me. Give if a special Oscar if you can't give him the real one, that's the least that could be done.

I have to disagree that it's a stretch to say this film needed a sequel. The first thing I thought about when the movie ended was, what happens next? I mean, obviously, I know they take over the world, but they filmmakers created such a rich story that draws you in...i didnt want it to end. And honestly, storywise, there's still a lot to tell.

Thumb me down all you want. But I thought Planet Of The Apes was one of the worst movie I saw this summer. Outdone only by Green Lantern which was even worst.
And saying that Serkis deserves an Oscar nomination for Apes? Please, give me a break!
Anyways, happy most of you liked it but for me the original Apes movies were more than ok. I really don't want to see a sequel to the latest one and would like for all involved to put their time, effort and money into another movie.
