Ang Lee's next film will be a 3D boxing epic

Ang Lee does not like to repeat himself. Just look at his films and see if there is anything that thematically or visually ties them together: THE ICE STORM, EAT DRINK MAN WOMAN, SENSE AND SENSIBILITY, HULK, BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN, LIFE OF PI, CROUCHING TIGER HIDDEN DRAGON. Each is a unique genre and has a distinct visual flair. The only consistent things about Ang Lee are his varied tastes and impeccable skill as a filmmaker. That being said, his next project is just as out there as anything else he has done.

According to Deadline, Ang Lee will use the same 3D camera technology used for LIFE OF PI to tell a sports story described as "epic":

A look at the boxing world of the 1960s and 1970s, as seen through the prism of its biggest rivalries and greatest fights. That will include the showdown between Joe Frazier and Muhammad Ali that was called the Thrilla In Manila.

The screenplay structure is unknown as is whether the fights will be filmed with computer effects or stand-ins, but the prospect of Ang Lee taking his style to a boxing movie is quite intriguing. I am not sure if this will feel like a boxing version of FORREST GUMP, but with Peter Morgan (FROST/NIXON, RUSH) on writing duties, I trust it would be well crafted.

I wanted to dislike LIFE OF PI for the overly CG style but could not. With amateur actors, Lee was able to craft a truly spectacular film and one I think should have won Best Picture. Hopefully he can win over any naysayers with this new movie.

I'll be waiting for this one

I flatout LOVED Life of Pi, a truly great 3D experience and one of the most gorgeously colorful and visually beautiful film I've ever seen, not to mention the deep philosophical thoughts that stayed with me long after I left the theater. So yeah, I'll eagerly wait to know more about the next 3D venture of Ang Lee.

Lee is a talented director, there is no doubt about that, but I truly do not feel that he 's quite in the upper eschelon of truly great ones working today.

His films are consistently good, I've seen almost all of his films, I feel like some of them are pretty underrated (Ride with the Devil; Lust, Caution) while others are pretty overrated (Life of Pi, ). However, he's yet to deliver one that's truly wowed me in the way that Wong Kar Wai, or Werner Herzog or even much of Del Toro or Nolan's stuff has. So, I don't necessarily get the hype that sometimes surrounds him. However, Peter Morgan is without a doubt one of the finest screenwriters working

I can respect if people enjoyed Life of Pi, butIf Life of Pi had won Best Picture than that would have been horrible. Argo deserved to win Best Picture more than any other film that came out last year and Affleck should have won Best Director along with it. Even Django Unchained and Silver Linings Playbook were more worthy than Life of Pi. If anything, if Argo hadn't won than I was hoping Silver Linings Playbook would have won.

I liked Life of Pi, until the religion crap kicked in. This project sounds intriguing though.

I'm on board (bored?)

I love this guy, he's one of my favorite directors. The only thing I didn't care for that he's done is WOODSTOCK. Most of his other shit is great or better.
If anyone else said they would do a 3d boxing movie, I would be indifferent - or just roll my eyes.
