Rumor: Angelina Jolie under consideration to direct Captain Marvel

04.16.2015

With Patty Jenkins stepping in as director on DC's WONDER WOMAN movie, Marvel may be in contention to nab Angelina Jolie to direct CAPTAIN MARVEL. That's right, Jolie will go from kicking ass on screen to potentially directing a kick ass woman. Collider originally reported sources saying Jolie was a frontrunner for both WONDER WOMAN and CAPTAIN MARVEL. Either project would have benefited from having her behind the camera, purely from a publicity standpoint. The question is whether she would really take the job.

To date, Angelina Jolie's directorial efforts have been passion projects rather than studio assignments. She first helmed IN THE LAND OF BLOOD AND HONEY, which she also wrote, followed by last year's UNBROKEN. She showed she has chops behind the camera but decided to make her next film the smaller BY THE SEA starring herself and Brad Pitt. She has been working on getting the true life tale AFRICA made with Pitt once again in a starring role. The film would be about Richard Leakey and his fight against elephant poaching, but has hit recent snags with financing.

CAPTAIN MARVEL is a major project for Marvel Studios as it would be their first solo film for a female superhero. There is, unfortunately, a short list of female directors to pull from who have experience with projects of this scope. Jolie would definitely have her hands full but it could also cement her with an opportunity to get more passion projects greenlit by major studios if she pulls it off.

A decision does not need to be made immediately, but expect this to come together sooner rather than later. CAPTAIN MARVEL is slated to open on November 2, 2018.

Both of her movies are rated 'Fresh' on Rotten Tomatoes

so that says something about her as a director. Most [link] are great at coaxing good performances from their cast, the big question is whether she can direct a solid action sequence.

So, only men direct male centric and women female centric Marvel stories? Does anyone else view this as sexist? Or just short-sighted?

Jolie has desired traits coming from the Eastwood school of directing. She could bring some serious depth and dimension to Carol Danvers, but I don't see much in the way of humor. But if Edgar Wright and Marvel couldn't see eye to eye, I don't think Jolie and Marvel will fare much better. Not to say that Marvel is controlling, but with this film being sandwiched right between the two Infinity War movies I imagine Kevin Feige will have lots of ideas of his own reguarding how this film plays

I wouldn't be against her getting the gig, but I would rather see someone else with a bit more experience in the action scenes department.

And Emily Blunt for Captain Marvel, please. She has more then proved she is capable of handiling the role with her performances in Looper, and Edge of Tomorrow.

Whoa! I doubt she'll take the job but if she does it'd be epic!

Interesting choice, let's just see how she can handle directing action scenes.

I'd be surprised if she took the job. Also, this is great and all, but more importantly: lock in Emily Blunt for the role. Thanks. Sincerely, everyone ever.
