Another actor injured on the Broadway stage of Spider-Man

Mar. 23, 2011by: Mike Sampson

Actress TV Carpio probably thought the stars were aligning in her favor when she was cast in "Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark" after original actress Natalie Mendoza left the production. Unfortunately the only stars aligning for Carpio are the ones spinning around her head in a dizzy circle. Carpio suffered a neck injury during a "mid-performance incident" of the musical and will be out of the show for two weeks. Considering the show is going on hiatus in starting in April, it's possible that Carpio might not return.

The actress was playing the role of lead villainess Arachne after Mendoza suffered a concussion during a performance and was advised by doctors not to return. Taking Carpio's place is understudy and former AITH Podcast guest America Olivo.

Why the production is continuing through previews when the show is taking a major hiatus to retool major aspects of the musical is beyond me. It's like playing your starters at the end of a football season when you've already got the playoffs and a first-round bye clinched. Why risk getting someone injured?

Carpio's is the fifth major injury to a cast member since "Spider-Man" began previews and two of the injuries were serious enough that the actors in question never returned.

at first it was comical how this production kept running into problems. but lately i'm getting a little pissed off that the people in charge are keeping this going with everything that has happened. enough is enough, or do someone have to get hurt real bad before they realise.

I didn't even realive the production had started yet. I thought they were still practicing. Is it normal to have this many injuries on a production? Maybe the only reason were hearing about it is because it's Spiderman.

$$$

They are continuing previews to recoup some of the enormous budget. Why stop previews when the show is constantly selling out and pulling in insane ticket prices?? The performers see this happening around them but seem commited regardless. Hopefully now that Taymor is out the show can be reshaped into something better.

Feels like there's some sort of curse going on here. Now I feel bad for Julie Taymor, seems her getting the ax wasn't the solution (though I'm not saying it was wrong to blame her initially). So basically, this project is just fucked. I hope they smooth out all the kinks in time, and still put the thing on after all this lest all those injuries be in vane, but it's still fucked.

i think theyre trying to see if someone dies so the show gets a little free PR, because like the man says, theres no bad PR, theres just PR.

this show actually sucks more than the movies because at least in the movies, no one got hurt :P

I hate to say this guys, but the budget on this thing is $65 million! They aren't going to shut it down. Not going to happen.

They should catch a clue though when they have all these injuries, and cirque de soleil has more shows in more venues and the injuries are much more rare.

I'm trying to act surprised...

Given the astronomical ticket prices (at least for my budget,) the distance between NY and MN, and the fact that the show will likely never open, I have never seriously viewed this show as something I might see. However, I sincerely hope that somebody out there is thoroughly documenting this debacle so that, when the five-million-dollar plug is finally pulled it can be turned into a documentary a la 'The Man of La Mancha.' I think it would be really cool to see a detailed going-over of
