Disney enrolls a new trailer for Pixar's Monster's University with John Goodman and Billy Crystal

Apr. 25, 2013by:

Disney has dropped another new trailer for MONSTERS UNIVERSITY, the prequel to MONSTERS, INC., which follows the college days of one-eyed monster (natch), Mike Wazowsky (Billy Crystal) and Sullivan (John Goodman) as they learn to scare the living shit out of kids all around the world and forge the bond of friendship that defines the duo.

Get to class:

Despite all the backlash for Pixar making another sequel/prequel, I think MONSTERS UNIVERSITY will still be a good time. Although we often enjoy these movies as much as kids, I think the fact that they are made for kids gets lost on a lot of folks. My kid is excited for this and I'm glad he is, especially since he's also excited for SMURFS 2 and he won't get to see that under my watch. Thankfully, Pixar comes to the rescue when it comes to making movies that can appeal to the old and the young. They aren't all that way, that's for damn sure.

MONSTERS UNIVERSITY hits the books on July 13, 2013.

Extra Tidbit: What kids movie are you most looking forward to this summer? I was excited for Epic until I saw the scenes with Beyonce and Pitbull. Now, Monsters University is at the top.

I haven't made plans to see this one yet. I am curious first what kind of college humor they go for (some things just plain don't belong in a kids movie), and how well some of the likely homages to other college-set comedies translates. Monsters Inc. is still a good enough movie that this deserves the benefit of the doubt.

On one end, that trailer did not look like a pixar film, more like what stratburst said with the college crossover movies for kids look. Pixar is currently 1-1 when it comes to their franchises being sequelized (Toy Story was handled with great care and spawned a great trilogy, Cars on the other hand just felt like a cash grab and the 2nd film didn't need to be made but still was an okay film imo). Monsters inc, looks more like the latter with it being a cash grab.

On the other side, it's Pixar, sure the trailer may look like shit, but again it's pixar, their track record is next to flawless, even their lesser films are still considered very good movies. Tarentinodork put it best with the relationship between sully and boo being the driving point of the first film, I hope there's some kind of driving force in this one that makes it worthwild as well.

Okay, I'm officially concerned

that looked like a mash-up of ANIMAL HOUSE, REVENGE OF THE NERDS, PCU and every other college movie made in the past 30 years. I'm not ready to write it off yet, but I hope the movie's better than the trailer. FROZEN looks good, but I think we're gonna have to look overseas for great animation this year.

Extra Tidbit

As far as i'm concerned, this is the only kids movie on my radar this summer. Smurfs 2, Despicable Me 2, Turbo, and Epic all look like stale duds

this movie (even though its a prequel) looks fresh and funny. Another home run for Pixar. This and "Frozen" seem to be the only worthwhile animated films this year

What made Monsters Inc. timeless was the parent-child dynamic between Sully and Boo, and the lengths to which Sully goes to protect her. Sully & Mike's friendship was strictly secondary. Not looking like this flick is going to deliver something of similar impact.

yeah, and Up looked like a movie about an oldman and a kid in a house of Balloons fighting a pack of dogs. When that movie finally came out what we got was a big pleasant surprise with how much heart was in it.

Toy Story and Monsters Inc also both looked like cliche animated films judging by the trailers

Wow, that was so void of humour that it was almost funny because of it. Almost.
