Confirmed: Anthony Hopkins, Evan Rachel Wood to star in HBO's Westworld

Jul. 22, 2014by:

UPDATE: Deadline has confirmed that Anthony Hopkins and Evan Rachel Wood will star in HBO's WESTWORLD for producers J.J. Abrams and Jonathan Nolan. Nolan will direct from a script he wrote with Lisa Joy.

It has been a few years since we last heard about the remake of WESTWORLD from producer J.J. Abrams, but it looks like the project may be revving up again. Abrams has been eying the remake of Michael Crichton's science fiction western that starred Yul Brynner as an HBO mini-series and now his top casting picks have been revealed.

According to Film Divider, roles have been offered to Anthony Hopkins, Evan Rachel Wood, and James Marsden for the leads in the film. Hopkins would play Dr. Ford, the creator of Westworld and the robots that inhabit the amusement park. Much like Richard Attenborough's John Hammond from JURASSIC PARK, Ford's creations go haywire and begin killing guests of the park. Wood would play Doloroes Abernathy, a farm girl who doesn't realize she is a robot sex slave. Marsden would portray Teddy Flood, a Western cowboy who is also in love with Dolores.

The original WESTWORLD featured the guests trying to escape from a killer cowboy robot with the focus being on the human characters. This take seems to be more focused on the robots themselves and take a more human perspective. Hopefully this casting pans out as this would instantly become a must see series with such big names involved. WESTWORLD remains a cult classic and is ripe for the reboot treatment.

If they follow the original film's setup isn't there also scope for a bunch of other theme worlds - wasn't there ancient Rome and other resort options that also went horribly wrong? Certainly has potential - will give it a chance.

Just watched Westworld last weekend

As I watched the film all I could think of is how awesome an update of that film could be if given the proper budget and a quality cast(which this has so far). The only question is who will play the Yul Brynner part in this because the entire film was elevated by how great he was as the villain. Maybe Josh Brolin, who's dad played the protagonist in the original film could take on the role of "Gunslinger"? James Marsden would be excellent in the role played by James Brolin as one of the

Overall VERY EXCITED for this and I didn't even get to how great it is that this will be on HBO and written and directed by Jonathan Nolan with JJ producing...this has all the signs of being great!

I remember years ago when Arnie was attached to this. I'm glad that never happened. This cast sounds a lot better.

Hope Marsden signs on as well. The guy needs to be in bigger, more exciting stuff. He's too good of an actor not to be.

It's great to see Anthony Hopkins on the screen but I want to know who will be the new Gunslinger.

I feel like that is the biggest role to cast and could go a long way in making this good or great. What do you think about getting Josh Brolin to play the role? It would be a cool nod to the original since his dad played the guest in the original, I also think he would be great as an emotionless, cowboy killing machine!

Josh Brolin was great in Jonah Hex. The movie sucks but he was great as Jonah Hex. I'm a bit 50-50 for him to play The Gunslinger. Hear me out first: Yul Brynner as The Gunslinger was iconic. He looked mean but he was lean and tall unlike other Western actors, say, John Wayne. That made Yul Brynner stands out and the way he acted as an unstoppable robotic Gunslinger. Aside from Josh Brolin, I was thinking of Josh Holloway.

I love the original film, and I love this type of film. Not really sure how I feel about this though. Yul Brynner was such a legendary actor, so filling that spot is not going to be easy at all.

Every time I hear about this remake, I used to always get sad about how there hasn't been an iconic enough cowboy to "reprise" his role sort of like how Yul Brynner was paying homage to Magnificent Seven. But now there is Jamie Fox's Django

Django iconic? Get the hell out of here. In 10 years no one will even remember that movie.

Majorkonig41 I wouldn't say no one will remember Django because I will. Is it the most iconic western ever? No, but it's a really fun film with a great performance by Leonardo DiCaprio.
