Antoine Fuqua and Denzel Washington may reteam for The Magnificent Seven

Jun. 5, 2014by:

Despite never having played one, if someone asked me to describe Denzel Washington in one word it would be cowboy. The guy has a swagger and a presence that cannot be argued. Every movie he is in, he owns the screen. Whether it be drama, action, or thriller, Denzel Washington is a badass. Now, after having reunited with the director who led him to an Oscar winning role in TRAINING DAY for this year's THE EQUALIZER, Washington and Antoine Fuqua may work together again on a remake of THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN.

The classic western, itself a remake of Akira Kurosawa's immortal SEVEN SAMURAI, has been in development for years. At one point it had names such as Tom Cruise, TRUE DETECTIVE'S Nic Pizzolatto, and John Lee Hancock attached but it never got off the ground. Now, with Fuqua rumored to take over, Denzel Washington's name may just entice six more badasses to join forces in what could be a Western version of THE EXPENDABLES.

I think it goes without saying that this is a good idea. While remakes are rarely ever looked at as a good idea, especially when the original is regarded as a classic, but THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN being kept a Western (set in post-Civil War America according to Deadline) and not moved to a contemporary setting could make for the classic kind of Hollywood magic that we don't get to see all that much of anymore. The only question is who will play the other six gunslingers?

I really can't help thinking that Ken Watanabe would be great playing in a Western. It could be a nice nod to the original Seven Samurai, but really I think having one of the characters as a disgraced samurai who fled across the sea to America would be interesting. Kind of reminds me of that old Charles Bronson movie Red Sun (which also starred Toshiro Mifune!).

If Denzel signs on then I hope the film can get Tom Cruise back too. Would love to see both of these two guys in a great Western film.

And perhaps getting Timothy Olyphant involved in this too?

A fellow Olyphant fan. Love it! Plus he would fit right in with his Deadwood and Justified background!

Great news!

I love this! This is great news and couldn't be more excited to see Denzel in a western.

I really like a lot of the commenters choices. I would love for Cruise to come back with Denzel, the other five I would choose would be:
1. Kurt Russell
2. Kevin Costner
3. Timothy Olyphant
4. Brad Pitt
5. My wild horse pick: Ben Foster

Other considerations: Russell Crowe, Tom Hardy, Idris Elba, McConaughey, DiCaprio

Other tidbit and this would only be if Fuqua has to step down due to a busy

I think he's got one more great western in him and I think he and Denzel could be great together. So hollywood just in case Fuqua can't go, keep Eastwood's number on speed dial.

This could be cool. I think Kevin Costner should be in it with Denzel. He's great with westerns.

Totally down

The original is a classic that itself was a remake and this type of story lends it self to being remade every once and a while. Don't know why bc I dont particularly like him but I feel Ryan Gosling in a western could be real good (as long as he can get that weird girl whine out of his voice) and of course a really strong set of other actors to fill out the roles.

The best 7 I could come up with...

1. Denzel
2. Colin Farrell
3. Olyphant
4. Cruise
5. DiCaprio
6. Norton (I love that pick)
7. A toss up between Downey or Pitt

That is off the cuff but I'm sure it would change if I sat down and threw out some other scenarios.

3) Johnny Depp
4) Ed Norton
5) Eddie Murphy
6) Matthew McCoughney

Villans:
Jack Nicholson or Javier Bardem
Tom Hardy as the muscle

Just curious. Why Eddie Murphy? If it's comic relief, there are less annoying choices. Maybe Jonah Hill.

I'm not sure why he popped into my head...honestly I would just like to see him do something different...he's so talented but makes such shitty movies. I wouldn't have him as straight up comic relief but he could be a sarcastic badass...lighten up the mood a little but not like a silly "Nutty Professor" performance...more like 48 Hours/Beverly Hills Cop bad ass with a quick wit...fair question but the list was off the top of my head and I thought "man I would love to see Eddie Murphy in a bad

It's a bit ridiculous how so many people yell and scream that remakes suck and Hollywood is out of ideas and so forth until a remake comes along you want to see and then it's green boxes all around.

This movie being a remake of a remake may have a factor in it. Also, we need more western.
