Anton Yelchin set to star in DreamWorks remake of Fright Night

04.06.2010

Anton Yelchin, who's recently starred in two genre franchises (STAR TREK and TERMINATOR SALVATION) has signed on to help relaunch another. Yelchin will star in the DreamWorks remake of the 1985 horror classic FRIGHT NIGHT for director Craig Gillespie. He'll star as Charley Brewster (yup, they're keeping the names the same in the remake), a role originated by a pre-"Herman's Head" William Ragsdale.

Marti Nixon wrote the updated script, which the studio is hoping can reach DISTURBIA levels of success as the movies tread some of the same basic beats. In FRIGHT NIGHT a teen becomes convinced his creepy neighbor is something slightly more than just creepy; he's a vampire. Armed only with a few skeptical friends and the host of a late night TV show titled "Fright Night" (hey, coincidence that's the name of the movie too!), he aims to save himself and his family.

Gillespie (LARS AND A REAL GIRL) was a surprise choice to direct the remake but I'd much rather have a solid out-of-the-box choice like this than the same old horror guys again. Filming is set to begin this summer for a 2011 release.

Extra Tidbit: Does this mean Yelchin is the new LaBeouf?

Thumbs up... sounds interesting.

all the remake crybabies should just go watch the originals and stop whining. If you asshats got your way I wouldnt have some of my favorite movies. Like The Departed, The Thing, Dawn of the Dead, The Fly, Scarface, Casino Royal and Little Shop of Horrors.

All those films you mention (except Dawn of the Dead) were remakes of poorly made cheesy B grade films.

Fright Night is a film better than most anything coming out right now. Remaking great films, that could not be improved upon no matter who was behind the camera, is simply raping art and fucking the original artist.

TAKE 2: sorry, too much beer

Fright Night is one of the best of the eighties. I don't mind remakes of shitty movies as long as they have either a great script/story and/or cast/crew, or vice versa. But dear Hollywood, stop copying and start creating again you A***HOLES!!!!! (and before anyone spellchecks my censored spelling, in australia we spell it ARSE)

All these green comments are exactly why we keep getting all these bullshit remakes. Stop being such tools.

I like the casting of Yelchin. I don't know who could play the Vincent role, closest I could come up with is Christoper Lee, he has the horror lineage all the way back to Hammer but somehow that name seems too big because of LotR and Star Wars. You could go in a different direction with Bruce Campbell.

If you get him who would be a worthy adversary, I liked the idea of Banderas but who has that swagger but younger, not Gossip Girls young but younger? The girlfriend and crazy friend I'm

Fright Night is one of my favorite horror movies of all time, right up there with Dawn of the Dead and Nightmare on Elm Street so they better not screw this up.

Remakes

This is one flick that deserves it. The original was great and I hope the new one does the cult classic justice.

That is so weird, but so cool.

I was watching Charlie Bartlett the other day, and just this morning I decided to watch the first hour of Fright Night. I think this is shaping up awesomely.

I like the kid. He's got talent up the wazoo and he'll likely bring it in this one. Anyone remember when they said Chris Sarandon would be playing himself in this as the one that Charley would turn to for help? I wonder if they're still sticking with that.

Roddy McDowell Dumb Ass but i'm sure Malcolm wouldn't be a bad pick to play Peter Vincent now.

To be fair, Yelchin will probably be a better actor than Ragsdale was. But can they match the smarmy evil that was Chris Sarandon? Or for that matter, for those of us who didn't grow up on Hammer or Rod Serling, what will be the back story for Peter Vincent?

Clash left a bad taste in my mouth concerning remakes. But Fright Night is my favorite Vamp flick even over Lost Boys. I like the casting of Anton as Brewster, very similar in look. I hope it's an R rated flick, b/c the seduction and gore doesn't need to be held back for the teeny bop texting crowd.

Wow Anton Yelchin? He's a very good actor. Here's hoping this ends up to at least be entertaining.
