Apes Prequel?

12.01.2008

I wasn't a huge fan of Tim Burton's remake of PLANET OF THE APES, and I think it's safe to say I wasn't the only one who shared that sentiment. It baffles me then, that 20th Century Fox is said to be interested in remaking CONQUEST OF THE PLANET OF THE APES, the story of Caesar, the first ape with speech who started the events that led to a world where monkeys ruled. Fox's Tom Rothman says:

We are very close at Fox on a new Apes script- this one a kind of prequel story before the first story, with a return to the social thematics that mark the first one, but with an entirely contemporary setting - Earth 2009

We all know that the minds that run Hollywood are running out of original ideas, but this one in partucular rubs me the wrong way. Is there any chance that this thing actually turns out well?
Extra Tidbit: Are there any fans out there of Burton's Ape flick?

Get Your Stinking Paws Off....

my original Planet of the Apes flics! They were great prepubescent fare and great memories come form them. If you're going to do them, stay more w/the originals and let's not get to artsy fartsy huh?

luke319 makes a very good point. Bad movies are made by bad directors with shitty scripts. Look at the last two Batman films before Nolan and Bale. They were terrible, but bring in a talented writer/director and properly cast the film and it becomes awesome. I can't say I thought the ape remake was great but it wasn't terrible. Get a good director with a good script and cast it well it could be great.

cool idea

Although, I agree with you that its annoying how Hollywood continues to make "uncreative" films I believe this could be an interesting spin on the series. It is taking a distant future event and bringing it to reality by making it happen in 2009. Personally, I have thought about having a movie like this since I saw the first one.

When compared to the original saga, Tim Burton's Planet of the Apes is inferior. It's got some great moments but overall just doesn't cut it. It lacks the great social commentary that the originals had seeped within. A remake of Conquest piques my interest, especially when you hear that the original had drastic cuts in the editing room. If they could keep it in line with the original and restore the hard hitting brutality with the blatant commentary of racism in the world, I'm all for it.

Burton's apes sucked ape balls.

Watching it with your brain on is not recommended. Looking directly at Helena B Carter's inexplicable ape eyebrows is not recommended either.

At least Burton finally cast a black actor in one of his films... oh wait, he played a dumb ape...

thanks Tim! did i mention your films suck?

I liked Burton's Apes alot actually. Very close to the original to me. I would have loved to see a sequel to it. I'll have to wait and see for this prequel though.

suuuper

Conquest was a pretty solid movie in the series, and the whole "Apes" series worked well as a whole (except maybe the second one.)
Do they really feel the need to blemish the series any further? and is there even a market for this? BAD IDEA.

I didn't hate Burton's POTA 'reimagining'.
Would've been a braver film if they'd started where they ended though, so if they absolutely have to carry it on, Conquest is the film i'd like to see the most, though i'd prefer a slightly futuristic dystopian angle to just setting it in the present day. I've been waiting for a decent cyborg gorilla movie for years.

Burton's film wasn't completely bad but in my mind it was nowhere near as good as the original (and although it deviated in parts from the novel I think it was still more faithful than Burton's version).

As for this new project it all depends on a very simple equation:

Bad Director + Bad Writer = Crappy Film
Bad Director OR Bad Writer = Poor Film
Good Director + Good Writer = Good Film

In other words if they get someone like David Fincher or Bryan Singer to direct, I'll be really

If they get someone like Francis Lawrence I'll probably go see it and maybe even enjoy it but overall be disappointed. If they get someone like Mark Steven Johnson Rob Cohen then I'll shake my head in shame.

I, too, enjoyed Burton's Planet of the Apes - while it may not have been a masterpiece or nearly as good as any of his other films, it still pretty solidly delivered on the visuals, set and costume design - if lacking in certain other aspects (such as acting or screenwriting, although Tim Roth was AWESOME!).

*raises a hand high* I'm a fan of Burton's APES. In fact, I'm NOT a fan of the other films - I think Burton's was the closest to the book (even with the left-field additional twist to the otherwise faithful ending), and was the most arresting all-around.

That said, this movie sounds...formulaic, as after all, do we REALLY need to see the exact events that led up to a great plot twist? But, this is also potentially good.

I am a fan of the Burton film. Probably one of the few films of his that I actually liked. His take on it couldn't go the same route as the original or it would be pointless. It was refreshing to me and also to see a POTA movie on the big screen. I was always hoping that they continued the series from the first remake, even if it doesn't get directed by Burton.

I've enjoyed every Tim Burton film except Planet of the Apes but I'm still interested in some sort of "reboot" (my new favorite Hollywood term) of the series. Apes are just so damn entertaining.

The prequel idea sounds interesting, only because I can't see how apes could spark a revolution in 2009.

The ending

The only thing I liked about Burton's version was his take on the twist ending. It still confuses me to this day.

No, nobody likes Burton's movie. He's way overrated as a director anyway.

I'm not against reusing old ideas in Hollywood so long as it makes for an interesting story. This prequel idea sounds rad. Hope they do it well.
